I am slowly working on building my yard sale stash for next year and I need to clean up the rug hooking hooking mess I made yesterday from cutting wool strips. Other than that, my whole house is organized. Lame, I know. You’d think it would make me happy. To have a clean and organized home. But let me tell you, it’s overrated.
I need a name for my little glass chicken. Any ideas?
2. Run, walk or crawl a Marathon, half marathon, 10k, and 5k race this year.
I’ve mapped out a route for my upcoming marathon. Now I just need to drive it and see if the mileage is correct and pick a sunny day to walk/jog it.
3. Remodel our Master Bathroom, Master Closet and Monkey Boy’s Bathroom.
4. Finish Every Room in Our House.
Working on it. And seriously, now that I’ve got a chair in the family room…. technically the house doesn’t need anything else. I would like to still find a smaller dining room table and a fiddle leaf tree though and hang a few more things on the walls.
5. Turn Spare Bedroom into a Cozy Home Office Space for myself.
6. Create a Vegetable Garden.
Poor Pinky. She says she feels a little exposed and wants to know if I can find her some clothing to wear during the winter months. 🙁
7. Build a Path into the Hillside for Easy Access to the Upper Garden.
We built a fence instead.
8. Limit my personal spending to $100 a month.
So. 🙂 🙂 🙂 Guess who “bought” 2 free pairs of socks at Kohl’s this week? Ummmm, that would be ME!!! I went to spend my $10 off a $10 purchase coupon that came in the mail the other day and I was hoping to find something useful I could give away as a Christmas gift.
I walked around for a few minutes looking for something for the HH and was thinking about getting him a henley shirt for $12.99 {which would have cost me $2.99+tax out of pocket} when I came upon the sock section. I could feel my heart beating faster as I noticed the 50% off socks sign and nearly let out a little squeal when I found a 2 pack of heavy boot socks on sale for $10.00!!!
Well, let’s just say I marched right up to the register and handed over my coupon to the cashier. I got out my debit card fully expecting to pay the tax on the free item and was shocked when she told me I owed nothing. Nada. Zilch.
So guess what the HH is getting for Christmas? Socks! 🙂 I think they’ll go nicely with the small bottle of soy sauce I picked up for him last week. Bahahahaha.
About the soy sauce… 2 years ago I bought a giant jug of soy sauce from Costco. We still have about 2″ left in the container and everytime I serve rice for dinner he makes the obnoxious comment “why we can’t have a normal sized soy sauce bottle like everyone else.” So I told him he better watch out or I’m going to buy him a little bottle of soy sauce for Christmas.
Weird. I know. But when you’ve been married for over 20 years…. This is what happens. You find joy in giving your husband free socks and a bottle of soy sauce for Christmas. It’s the American dream I tell you.
So far in November I’ve spent $9.46
In October I Spent $128.19
In September I Spent $28.73
In August I Spent $27.29
In July I Spent $50.82
In June I Spent $6.00.
In May I Spent $26.50.
In April I Spent $18.46.
In March I Spent $42.44.
In February I Spent $32.52
In January I Spent $84.33
9. Purge… Weekly. Find 10 things each week to donate to the thrift store.
Done and slowly building my pile for next year.
10. Read 1 book a week.
I don’t know about you but I am itching to plant something right now. I’ve decided to go through my copy of The Year Round Gardener and glean some ideas. I don’t mind working outside when the weather is cold… I just wish there were more things I could grow this time of year.
11. Slow Down. Do one thing for myself each week.
Lately I’ve been waking up super early and to get my blog work done and settling down with Lucy in the early afternoon to watch a movie {or two} and work on my primitive hooked rugs. Yesterday and the day before we watched Kate Winslet in the Mildred Pierce miniseries. It was a little racey in some parts {I covered Lucy’s eyes don’t worry} but it was interesting.
After the miniseries was over I did a little research and found out it was an adaptation of an old 1940’s movie with Joan Crawford also titled Mildred Piece. Joan Crawford won a Best actress academy award for her role in the film. So now I have to watch the old version. 😉
To be totally honest though, Joan scares me. Have you ever seen Mommie Dearest? Let’s just say there’s a reason we don’t have wire hangers in our house. S-C-A-R-Y.
12. Canning
I haven’t canned anything in a few weeks but I do have some new recipes I’d like to try.
Did you set any goals for this year? If so, how are they coming along?
~Mavis

Love the soy sauce. Yes… I also had to buy my hubby a cute little bottle just like the restaurants that we refill.
Debbie says
That chicken looks like “Crystal” to me 🙂
Eva W says
Way back in my youth, the was a cartoon with two characters; Foghorn Leghorn and Henery Hawk. Foghorn was always trying to convince Henery he was a chicken. i propose that your “chicken” be named Henery!
Renay says
I loved Foghorn Leghorn. I still walk around saying ‘I say, I say, that was a joke, son’!!!! LOL!!!!
Sluggy says
Joan Crawford is my 7th cousin and she scares me too.
Socks for Christmas is a family tradition here so call me weird as well. 😉

I have been thinking about how you are making your own races, and thought since I live in a small town about making a race where to enter by donating a food item for the food pantry. I enjoy walking but I have always been too cheap to pay for a race. Is there anything you get for paying for a race?
Mavis Butterfield says
Usually a t-shirt, water bottle and snacks at the end. Some races benefit local charities as well.
Earlene says
I named my glass hen Henrietta. She could use a friend like Gladys or Muriel.
Henrietta says
Henrietta is a great name!
Mavis Butterfield says
Okay. Henrietta it is. 🙂
Pam says
You have to name her “Henny Penny”!
Renay says
Frances, Frannie. Fran. Though Crystal is pretty clever!
Deborah from FL says
Um, Mavis? Why are you stockpiling items to donate next year? I mean, why not donate them now? Sorry to be so nosy; sometimes I just can’t help myself! 😛
Cathe says
I think you should call your “glass chicken” poulet . I love this word “pool et” french for chicken 🙂
Donna in VA says
If it’s a girl chicken I do like the Crystal suggestion. If it’s a rooster, I like “Buck” because that is what chickens say.
My Kohl’s coupon was for $5 so I got 3 clearance dish towels for $1.67.
I had the same $10 sock experience at JC Penney’s a year ago and they did not charge me sales tax either.
Kimberly says
Hi Mavis,
I was wondering if you ever got your new teeth and if so how the whole dental implant experience was-I’m also the owner of “crappy British teeth” and in need of two dental implants.
Mavis Butterfield says
I did and it went really well. I am happy with the results. Best of luck to you. You will feel so much better once you get your “new” teeth in. 🙂

Mildred Pierce is also a (1941) book by James M. Cain. I found the book pretty depressing so it doesn’t come anywhere near my top 10. I hope the movie(s) aren’t as depressing.
Julia says
I do the same thing with my $10 Kohls GC!! I see what I can get for free without going over!! Usually I get a nice scented candle that I otherwise wouldn’t get for myself. But I never thought about socks!! I’ll have to keep my eyes open for them next time.
Stacy says
I love that Joan Crawford movie, no one else has seemed to have watched it…..I have never been able to find it on any flea market/thrift store/yard sale trips. (Always looking for Mildred Pierce and Whatever Happened to Baby Jane)
I haven’t gotten my $10 off coupon yet, if others have gotten one…Ill be on the lookout for mine 🙂 Its always a safe bet that if i cant find anything else, I’m grabbing towels or pillows.
