This morning Lucy the Trouble Puggle and I headed out to the greenhouse to see how all the plants were coming along AND to plant some lettuce seeds in the extra galvanized bin we have in there.
The lettuce we planted in late summer is still doing well. We’ve been trimming leaves from the back {because I have major OCD and still want the front of it to look pretty} and it looks like we will have plenty of fresh lettuce for a giant Thanksgiving salad next week.
The spinach is ready to be picked as well.
Remember the lettuce we started under grow lights?ย check it out!
I love planting lettuce blends rather than one type of lettuce. Even though it costs the same, mesclun lettuce just feels so much more grown up than ordinary Romaine lettuce. ๐
More lettuce growing in a container.
One of our lemons has a wee bit of brown scab on it. Does anyone know if this is a totally bad thing? Will my lemon be alright? I have the lemon a little squeeze and it’s still pretty firm so I know it’s not ready to be picked yet.
And here’s another Meyer Lemon. This one is next in line {to eat!}. It’s torture having to wait for these to ripen and I’m thinking about making a trip to Costco to see if our store has Meyer Lemons in yet.
Don’t think think a batch of lemon bars sounds good right about now?
Are you growing lemons?
How are yours coming along?

Hi Mavis,
I can’t advise you on your brown lemon spot, but I hear you about lemon bars!!! Most of the lemons around here are now Meyers (including our own), so sometimes I need to go on a real hunt for tart Eurekas. I’ve found that the ideal balance for lemon bars is 1/2 and 1/2! I keep lemon juice in my freezer, frozen in cubes. I do a batch about 3 times a year and it works great for us! I wish I had your patience with lettuce. I just haven’t had good luck with it ๐ I am so jealous of your lettuce!

Mavis, your lemons both look a bit deficient in nutrients. I would suggest a good citrus fertilizer mix applied around the outer root line and watered in. I think you may be over watering the lemons. Let them dry out more over winter and start to water them again in spring. The do need plenty of water over summer and spring, but do not like wet feet over the cooler/cold months.
An easy home citrus fertiliser is human urine… male, not female (unless post menopausal) as it has too many hormones in it. Get the males of the species to pee into a bucket, let it cool over night then half/3/4 fill the bucket and water this onto the lemon. You are adding all the nutrient elements this way. This is how I have kept lemons healthy for years. I do this 3-4 times a year.
I think your brown spot is related to nutrient deficiency. I would remove the affected lemons and leaves tho, in case I am wrong.

Your Greenhouse posts are my all time favorite posts! Love to see what ya got growing out there thru the winertime too!

I think it is nutrient related, lemons are very heavy feeders and require quite a lot of feeding. Also she is new tree and has been trying to establish a good root system and fruit as well. This is the main the reason why it is suggested to remove all of the flowers for the first year.

Mavis, your lettuce crop looks wonderful! I don’t know anything about growing lemons, but doesn’t your online boyfriend Ryan have any suggestions??

Hey, I should email him. He’s a total greenhouse nut. I wonder why I never thought to do so before. Thanks!

Mavis, I am watching your lemons as they grow and progress, because if they turn out as wonderful as everything else you grow, I’m getting me a Meyer lemon tree. I lived in southern California until about 8 years old, and we had five lemon trees in our yard. That’s where I learned to love them. Now it nearly KILLS me to buy them in the store. If you can get a lemon tree to grow in a pot in Washington state, I can figure out how to get one to grow in central Illinois!! Thanks for the updates and keep them coming! ๐

5 lemon trees? Holy smokes that is a lot of lemons!!

I want a green house! My little garden is done for now. The below freezing days wiped the last bit of everything out.

I was so inspired by your Meyer Lemon tree that I also ordered one. I have had mine for several months and i have 16 good sized lemons and it is blooming like crazy. A couple months ago it was looking pretty bad. The leaves were turning yellow and dropping off. I had a hard time finding advise on what type of fertilizer to use and decided on Dr. Earth Natural Wonder Fruit Tree Fertliizer. It has made a world of difference. The leaves are all dark green and the tree is much happier. I will tell you, it sinks…bad! But just for a few days.
