There’s a new app on the block aimed at cutting down food waste. It’s called Foodfully, and it was designed by a woman, who after studying food spoilage in graduate school, wanted to cut down on the 20 lbs of food each person throws away each year.
The app has you enter your grocery list each week {it also syncs loyalty cards and keeps track of receipts}, and then offers recipe ideas and alerts reminding you how to use the ingredients. Once you’ve used the item, you let the app know, and it wipes the item from the list. The app predicts spoilage based on the average shelf life of food kept in the fridge.
While I think the idea is super clever, I have to say when did we stop using our common sense? Do we really need another app? Are our refrigerators really that stuffed with so much food that we can’t do a quick sniff test?
You all know, I am all for cutting down on food waste, and maybe this will revolutionize the way some people use the apparently forgotten grocery items, but for me, I think the solution is in buying less and then simply using it.
What do you think? Will you be downloading the app? How do you prevent food waste at your house?

I think this is just too much work. It is easier just to look in the fridge and see what there that needs to be used up. What happens when someone else in the family eats something.? I can see it being more of a problem than a solution. I think an app that you have to take a photo of anything you threw away would be more helpful. I would be more motivated to be accountable for something than to be reminded of something.

Oh I like that idea! The visual would probably be startling for some people!

No apps for me… I’m a paper & pencil kind of gal with my dated list of leftovers stuck to the fridge with a magnet. Easy to see what needs to be incorporated into dinner in the next couple of days or added to the freezer.

I do something similar. After I shop I put a list of all fruits and veggies on the fridge and cross them off as they are used.

I’m sorry, but I chuckled the whole way through that post. Hysterical.
No, I do the old-fashioned thinking-thing. And paper-and-pencil list-making.
I think I was born a few decades too late. 😛

I would totally use it. I’m a scattered brain, working lady, and my phone alerts me to many things I have a hard time organizing. BUT I’d still probably forget to add the items to the app because that is a step that also requires being organized. Worth a try.
I tried to download it but it’s not ready yet. I put my name on the list for when the app becomes available.

That’s a really good idea! My sister is recently trying to reduce the food waste of her family and this app seems to be quite helpful for her. I’m definitely recommending your post to her and to some friends too. Thanks for the nice tip!
