On the way to the airport last week, not only did we stop at the Gingerbread Construction Company for a muffin, but we also stopped by New Deal Fruit in Revere to check out their world famous subs and Italian grocery items.
Let’s just say the produce at New Deal Fruit was so much better than what I’ve seen at the regular grocery stores lately. Not only did all the fruits and vegetables look great, but the prices were reasonable too.
Giant stalks of celery for $2.50. I remember this past winter Scammaford was selling celery for $4.99 that was about ⅓ of the size of the celery at New Deal Fruit!
They were even selling “spotted bananas” for $0.20 a pound! And if you ask me, that’s the best time to buy bananas… You know, when they actually taste like a BANANA.
My husband thinks bananas are ripe when they still have a little bit of green on them {How weird is that?!}.
Packaged Italian cookies and cakes. Yes please!
Take a look at those nice and fat rigatoni noodles. They were perfect. I didn’t have any room in my carry on or I would have bought a few bags. Next time we are in the area {perhaps on our way to the Cape this fall} I’m going to stock up.
Check out those cheese logs!
Loafs? I don’t know what they’re called but wholly cannolis man they were pretty cool looking.
What do people use almond syrup for? Anyone know? Maybe in desserts? Or drinks? I don’t know but I think I need to add that to my list of must have items.
But the real reason we stopped here was to check out their deli counter. And man oh man it did not disappoint.
A few years ago the HH watched a video online about their subs and ever since then everyone in a while he’ll mention the place and say we need to go there.
The sandwich options at New Deal Fruit are endless and my guess is that there are a lot of people who stop in for their subs on a weekly, if not daily basis.
The deli counter was HUGE and it was a tough decision of which sandwich to order.
I ended up ordering the “Joe DiMaggio” sub. A full Italian Sub with sausage, red peppers and onions.
The Girl ordered the “Rosemary” sub. It had Rosemary ham, Swiss cheese, red pepper and oil and vinegar.
Both sandwiches were fantastic! {We ate them in the parking lot at the airport because we didn’t want to take our subs on the plane. Don’t you hate that? When people bring super stinky food on the plane? I know I do}.
So anyway, if you ever find yourself in Revere, Massachusetts {or on the way to the airport with extra time} stop by New Deal Fruit and have a look around. They’ve got it all!
Have a great day everyone,
~ Mavis

that is the most delicious almond syrup to add to seltzer or club soda !

Yes, desserts, drinks (including hot coffee and hot chocolate), fruit salad. My mom would put just a tad in a fruit salad and people went bonkers over it.

Fruit salad! I never would have thought of that. Now I need a bottle.

Hi! Did I miss where you went with The Girl?
That store looks terrific! Many years ago we lived in Chicago with huge Italian stores, where we live there is nothing like that-miss them!

Hi Mavis,
I learned about almond syrup or Orgeat after my mom passed. Her favorite drink was a Mai Tai. I decided to make them at a family party as a remembrance of her. An authentic Mai Tai uses Orgeat. Good orgeat will use crushed almonds and real sugar. Looks like a great trip. I always like to look at food and cookbook and usually come home with food in my suitcase.

We just returned from visiting the inlaws in Bristol/New Harbor Maine & were JUST raving to them about the New Deal Fruit grinders (grew up in CT). We like buying them, driving to Revere beach, and eating them in the covered pavilion/picnic tables while overlooking the ocean.

I used to live a stones throw from there. I’m too far away now to get there very often but I think there may be a special trip in my future. Those sandwiches look amazing.
Julie says
I agree with your husband on bananas. Once spotted, they are over the hill and doomed to the freezer for a future in banana bread and banana muffins.

Why is your trip destination such a big mysterious secret???❤️

I would love to have a store like that near me! It looks just great and I would be a frequent visitor.
Poppy says
I wonder if you could use that almond syrup in your cherry-almond jam.

I now live in NC but was raised in upstate NY. I rarely visit there, but recently went for a high school reunion and came back with three boxes of my very favorite pasta…..pastina. Unfortunately. The most variety of pasta is found in the North, not South. One of the few things I miss.

That almond syrup drizzled very sparingly over fresh berries is my favorite dessert. A little goes a long way but it is delicious over, or mixed with, anything sweet.

I think I would move there just to go to that store as often as I like! Great looking fruit and veggies but those sandwiches are da bomb!

Brown spotted bananas are basically rotting in my opinion. 🙂 I’ll only eat bananas if they still have some green on them.

Have you been to Micucci’s in Portland? It’s downtown on India Street. It’s a wonderful Italian market with a great deli, and good deals on Italian foods. They have decent produce, as well.
Golden Harvest in Kittery also has excellent deals on produce, if you’re out and about. Or, used to, I admit I haven’t been down there in a while.
Mavis Butterfield says
We haven’t been to Micucci’s! Thanks for letting me know. I’m adding it to my list.
