I can’t imagine something smelling so good that I would stop, drop and roll in it.
Repeatedly.
Please tell me your dog does this too.

All dogs do. It’s instinct to hide their scent, from prey.

Yes my dog does this too. Unfortunately it’s always something stinky or dead that she’s rolling in. Then she needs a bath. LOL

Ditto.

My golden retriever does this every time he goes outside and has been bringing in flowers that have fallen off a tree in our yard stuck in his fur. And we have been finding them everywhere. It’s a swifter/vacumn a couple times a day thing and we still find them.

My kids would hug Puppy no matter how stinky he was. Then came the day he had rolled in something dead. Even they yelled at him to get away. Once she discovered the joys of putrification, she never went back to normal dirt

My sister lives near the shores of Lake Erie. Do do NOT want to know what her doxie mix rolls in.

I used to live near a horse farm. One day my Miniature Schnauzer discovered the joys of rolling around (just like Lucy was in your pics) in fresh warm manure. :p

Not only rolls in, but sometimes eats!
Thanks for the pictures. They were a sight for sore eyes after a harrowing day at the dentist.

Yep, same here! I have 2 dogs & they both find the smelliest stuff in the yard to roll around in! I keep a pack of dog wipe sheets right by the door to at least get a quick wipe down. Usually a bath comes shortly afterwards! It does make for some cute doggie pictures though! Very, very cute!

Live in the Mountains……………..dog rolls in Bear poo, dead fish, anything that is putrid the stinkier the better.

And I thought only Beagles did this!

Yes! Every time she goes outside, Bella does this. We say she’s giving herself a grass bath. We’re pretty sure it’s her secret to her super soft coat 🙂

A few times I have been curious enough to really check out what was so interesting that the dog had to sniff so intensely and then roll vigorously in a specific spot since I could see nothing. Each time it has been a dead worm. Oh the small joys one finds in life.

My Chihuahua loves to roll on dead earthworms too! Good to know she is not the only dog that does this!

Oh no, it’s not just Lucy. When I moved from washington down to Florida, on the first trip my collie, Connie, stopped, dropped and rolled every time I let her out of the car. Luckily, it was just to roll, not because there were stinky things to roll in.
During the 2nd trip, my other collie, Monet, decided to roll in poop – I think it was human poop. I used all the water in the car to rinse her off before we started down the road again. She got a full-blown bath that night and I fumigated myself and the car. It was disgusting.

My service dog, Tao, absolutely spends half his playtime rolling…we call it, “doing the wiggle wiggle.” This is completely fun in his world. However, when Tao decides to roll in something nasty..he drops a shoulder first as a cue and sideyes me…and oh HECK no, son, OFF, TAO!!! 😀

Hi Mavis! I am inspired to share my story of my dog Maggie who graced my life for 15 years. She was a wonderful and very intelligent dog, but she did have a penchant for rolling in stinky stuff. She once outdid every other act of rolling in stink by rolling in a dead, putrifying corpse of a deer that was also full of maggots! Of course we were on a hike far from home and there was no water to wash her! I had to keep all the windows rolled down on the way home and STILL managed to gag out the window multiple times. When I got her home it was straight into the bath for her. When I undid her collar there were numerous wiggling maggots that had gotten smashed into the openings! So, that at least give me a realistic view of the scale possible in the stink rolling business! Ha ha! It seems after that I was desensitized to the small inconvenience of her rolling on dead worms. I’m just glad that was a one time event…knock on wood!
