I LOVE the first beef stew of the season! I made some this week….so hearty and good!!
I bought a 50 lb. box of apples (mostly Jonagold0 from Chuck’s Produce for $7.50. I made Apple crisp, dried a bunch and a small amount of applesauce.
I still have more than half left….need to do something with the rest today 🙂
Nancy D says
Hi Susan….are you in theVancouver Washington area? I LOVE the Chucks Produce on old 99
Rita says
What a deal! Is that the regular price or what?
Susan says
They are the “culls”- the ones with a bruise or ugly skins.
They fill a banana box to the top – they weigh anywhere from 46 – 50 + pounds.
Whenever I’m feeling like a good canning session or want some dried apples, etc. I ask one of the produce workers if they have a box in the back.
I have had good luck asking. At .15 a pound, it is well worth asking.
Rita says
Thank You so much for your reply! Fantastic deal!
Susan says
Yes! I shop the Mill Plain store 🙂
My favorite store!

Beef stew is on the menu for tomorrow’s Sunday dinner!

Susan, My daughter and I have become experts at canning apple pie filling. Lasts quite a while and makes a great little Christmas present. My son eats with spoon straight from the jar, and the apple pie filling is great over french vanilla ice cream. Oh, it also makes quick, homemade pies!

We did our annual fall foliage trip to Leavenworth yesterday and I got a mixed box of apples: Honeycrisp, Empire, and Gala. I also need to figure out what to do with them today and tomorrow. Got 28 pounds for $6! That works out to 21 cents a pound, for mostly Honeycrisp. Very excited for this deal. We always go to the same apple stand on Hwy 97. The nice lady even gave us a bag of sliced apples for the road. Love it!
Catherine says
Is this Leavenworth, Kansas? If so where did you get your apples? I’m in Kansas as well.
Laura says
No, sorry, Leavenworth, WA.
Denise says
What is the name of the stand? I may just take a trip over the mtn’s and get me some of that great deal. I have been thinking about a fall leaf road trip.
Mel says
We’re going apple picking this weekend, as we do every fall. Most varieties of apples stay good in the crisper for at least a month and usually more. We usually pick Stayman apples since those are my all-around favorite for fresh eating and cooking. My favorite ways to use them up (aside from fresh eating) are applesauce, apple butter, apple cinnamon scones, apple pie doughnuts, and slab apple pie. All of those freeze extremely well.
This is also the time of year when Amazon tries to convince me that I need a cider press. I haven’t caved yet, but I do lose a little resolve each year.
