Hello Saturday!
Snow is in the forecast for today so I’m pretty excited about that. 🙂 Plus, The Girl is here and so we’re going to try and make a raspberry jelly roll today. Have you ever made one of those? I haven’t and for some reason they seem a little intimidating. Wish me luck.
On the agenda for today:
- Pack up orders and ship them out
- Finish bundling wool
- Make a Jelly Roll
- Make Mrs. C’s Pot Roast for linner
- Watch Miss Potter {for the millionth time}
How about YOU? What’s on YOUR list for today?
Have a good one, and stay warm.

they are much scarey than they really are. Just roll up when still very warm and give it the time to cool down. Afterwards you will be surprised how easy it is. I have done pumpkin roll ups a million times (years ago) and they always turned out so good. Good luck.

I’ve never made a full-size jelly roll, but I made mini yule logs (yule twigs, I guess) one year so everyone could have an individual portion. I think the directions always sound trickier than the actual process is.

For today:
1) NO laundry!! (did it all yesterday)
2) decorate Christmas tree (the mantle is decorated and the stockings are already hung)
3) visit with some family members
4) That’s it!
The Christmas shopping is done. The baking is done. All the gifts are wrapped. Time to relax and enjoy the season!
PS: Our weather is supposed to get really cold next week – they are even predicting that we might get a little snow . . . but we live in Florida . . . northern Florida, but still Florida . . .
Mavis Butterfield says
Well done Rosemary!!! Put your feet up and enjoy. 🙂

Right next to rolling the cake while still very warm is to not overbake it. Easy to do when it’s so thin. But the other commenters are right, it looks intimidating but it is actually quite easy. I’ve made “Swiss Cake Rolls” and they are fun!

This week, my little family of four just moved from an RV we’ve lived in for 5 years to a sticks-and-bricks home. We miss the RV, but today, we’re going to get more settled into our new home!

I feel like Lucy looks in that picture. Today is my family’s Sunday so we’re trying to get our home prepped and ready for the week. Also still processing the fact that yesterday a 14 foot trampoline unexpectedly arrived at my door… for my baby and 2 year old for Christmas
Otherwise trying to finish up a few homemade Christmas gifts to send off early next week.

My husband got our 5 month old one of those giant flying saucer swings. I told him our son could maybe use it in spring…4-5 years from now.

Baking is almost done- bread and TJ Cinnamon-like rolls still to do. Started making hot cocoa bombs. Getting ready to machine embroider the grandpuppy’s name on his stocking cuff before I sew said stocking together. Everything’s a bit late this season.

I made a pumpkin roll for Thanksgiving and was surprised at how easy it was. Next up is a yule log for Christmas.
I just made a triple batch of ravioli for the freezer. I hope the littlest grandchildren don’t leave it on their plates because whew! – that was a lot of work – next time I’ll draft some helpers.
Mavis Butterfield says
I’ve nver made a yule log before but I think it would be fun to try.

LOTS of powdered sugar underneath the jelly roll helps. Roll it up while still warm — then you can unroll again, fill it — and roll it back up. Slow and steady wins the race.
I have several goodies to make this week, including banket (a Dutch almond roll beloved by my dad) and Austrian Sachertorte (beloved by our kids). Doing a lot more baking this year, which actually feels kinda nice.
Cindy Brick says
(I should have mentioned that you put the powdered sugar down after you initially roll the warm cake. Sprinkle it liberally on the pan underneath, unroll — fill and reroll. Frost when it’s cool.)
I just read that Ms. Potter became a crabby old woman who didn’t like visitors — especially kids. Roald Dahl loved her books and tried to visit when he was six — he got on the property and noticed an old woman (Potter was then 80 or 90) staring at him. She asked what he wanted. When he said he wanted to meet Beatrix Potter, she said, “Well, now you’ve seen her. Now get out.” !!!!
Cindy Brick says
(She died at 77. I just checked. But that was Dahl’s later story!)

Lucy has the right idea for today. Bundle up in a blanket and relax all day! It is snowing in Central Ohio and we did get up to about an inch. Hoping we get dumped on this Thursday. Just love a white Christmas. If I live in a snowy climate- I want to see snow in the winter!
Wishing a Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to all of Mavis’ followers. Please be careful if you are traveling!
