Gardening books hold kind of a special place in my heart. I wouldn’t be the gardener I am today {or maybe not a gardener at all} if it weren’t for a few gardening books I picked up years ago. I spent almost the entire winter of 2008/2009 reading up on gardening. I found some incredible reads that taught me so much and made me realize how much I didn’t know. So I’ve never stopped reading gardening books.
Here are just a few of my favorites:
My Favorite Garden Books:
- Carrots Love Tomatoes: Secrets of Companion Planting
- The Complete Compost Gardening Guide
- Mini Farming: Self-Sufficiency on 1/4 Acre
- Sugar Snaps and Strawberries
- The Gardener’s A-Z Guide to Growing Organic Food
- The Kitchen Gardener’s Handbook
Looking for something freakin’ AWESOME to make for breakfast? Umm, I mean dessert? This recipe for Apple Crumb Pie is BY FAR my all time favorite apple pie recipe. Get the recipe HERE or Pin it for Later.
Have a Wonderful Weekend!

The Rancho Gordo order that I placed about 10 days ago was a bit delayed due to the extreme demand they are experiencing (totally understandable), but my husband found a local produce stand selling local dried beans. We don’t have permanent produce stands around here, but sometimes a farmer or two will set up a roadside table. So I have two slow cookers of beans going (one pinto and one black), and I’m going to make veggie chili tonight and either freeze the rest of the beans or make meat chili tomorrow and freeze that.
Other than that, I’m deep cleaning the kitchen today so that I can bake bread tomorrow and freeze it. Also doing what I sincerely hope is the last of the laundry. I’ve done something like 25 loads in the past 7 days (dog blankets, pet bed covers, couch covers, curtains, rugs, etc.).
The cleaning is satisfying, but it is so odd for me to be freezer cooking at this time of year.

Chili sounds like a good idea. It’s supposed to be cold tomorrow so I think I’ll make some too! 🙂
Mel says
It has warmed up a bit here in Maryland, but it’s gray and rainy (and socially distanced), so chili seemed like a good fit!

That movie is really really good! Not what I expected and the hub liked it too!

Our town came to a standstill overnight. All restaurants are take out only, no stores are open, and the streets are bare.
It is a sad eerie time. My friend that owns a bakery is selling her cookie dough, bread starter and delivering curbside. She owns 4 bakeries and all are closed to public. I delivered about 15 knit hats to her and her staff. Not much that I can do to help but at least their sweet lil heads will stay warm and cozy, and know that they are loved.
I dropped off fresh bread through the car window to my son-my other son is over an hour away and we haven’t been able to see him. He works in LA, and has been around too many people to feel it is safe for us.
I traveled through LAX International on 3/1 and returned on 3/6. So-we are on watch too. Life-well-it is strange right now. I am knitting up a storm, baking and hugging my dogs, but I sure miss my sons. Life-it is crazy somedays but we will get through this. thank you for your positive updates each day-it makes a difference.

Mavis – Thank you for the post with all the freebies. Very cheerful.
Would you or your dear readers advise me on getting RID of Poison Hemlock? I read up on it last year and read the seeds can hold life for only three years, It does not like to be disturbed and as poisonous as it is, thankfully it does not poison the ground. The plants were big last year as we bought a place that had been empty for years. We suited up, pulled and bagged all seedheads and had it all gone. This early spring – thousands, hundreds of thousands- are coming up everywhere. We have a quarter acre and I am heartbroken it is not safe for my grandkids, future chickens, future dogs, or my neighbor’s horses.
Is this an appropriate time to use Round Up?
Ruth says
Thank you for posting. I never even thought of having property checked for poisonous plants before buying. Have you checked with goat breeders to find out if goats could help? I’m not saying they would, (some say goats can eat poison hemlock, others say it will kill them). Here is a scary site telling you not to use Round Up and to use goats, but they seem to be one-sided, and before believing them, check with experts.
Good Luck! (& I hope there is a solution to your problem.)

A/O this am, just heard on tv that Amazon has stopped shipping groceries on prime panty, so you may want to take down their ads here.
