Mavis, y’all could totally do a “camping” air conditioner to help you get through the extreme heat. Google instructions but it merely entails a Styrofoam cooler, a small fan and ice. We have done these a few times over the years in emergencies and you will be surprised at how much it will help. At least you’ll be able to sit in a cooler area for a bit.

Where are the coupons you mention next to your Amazon items? When I click the link I don’t see them and the price is higher than what you have written.
Mavis Butterfield says
Hi Mary,
Typically the coupons are right above the price. Go back and take a look at the post, I just added a photo with an arrow for you. 🙂

Hello Mavis! Your ceramic pics for the Small business Saturday part of this post had me wondering- are you familiar with Bennington Pottery? I’m from the namesake town (Bennington, VT) and it can be a fun visit to take a self guided tour of the factory. They aren’t what I would call “affordable” dishware, but people covet their Bennington Pottery. I’m always on the hunt for it in thrift stores!
Mavis Butterfield says
Thanks for the info Katelyn, I just added it to my list of places to visit. 🙂

Mavis, I hope you and your husband will consider central air conditioning. It’s just a must in this part of the country. The entire northeast has extremes of weather, which I think make it a great place to live. I love the crazy winters and snow, but summers are just brutal with both heat and humidity for about three months of the year. It’s easy to have installed if one has forced air heating, the cold air is circulated through the same venting system. And slightly more involved and expensive if one needs to install freestanding zones units mounted up by the ceiling in key parts of the house. They’re not as unsightly as they used to be, and quiet. I can’t bear the noisy, ugly window units, but to each their own and they’re definitely the least expensive choice. Bite the bullet; you’ll be so much more comfortable!

here in Georgia it gets around 90-100 degrees every year. This year the heat started in late April ( normally Mid May) We have not used AC in over 8 years. the house was built in 2004 the Ac broke in 2006 ($200+). IT broke again in 2010. We will not pay to fix it again because now the units take different coolant, so older units must be replaced ( LOTS $$$$) so we have a large fan in the upstairs window blowing out, all windows are kept closed except in the room we are using. the fan pulls cool air in thru the open windows and blows the hot air out. At night our bed room windows are opened and a small fan is in the window to pull cool air in from the front porch. A lot of trees around the house also helps to shade the house.
