Q: how do you dye wool brown? Have you ever used natural materials, or do you just use RIT & co? (I’m needle-felting and haven’t found a good source to buy a straight (not fox-red, not greenish) brown yet, so I’m starting to wonder about dying my own after the last attempted “it looks brown on screen” ebay order came in yet again not-brown.)

Hi KC,
I use Cushing’s dyes. Here is a link: https://www.onehundreddollarsamonth.com/primitive-rug-hooking-how-to-dye-wool-using-cushings-dyes/

I’ve done a fair amount of dying, including some with natural dyes. Natural dying sometimes presents challenges…. often you need A LOT of your herb or natural material, sometimes it is not available most of the year, sometimes the color fades, and sometimes even with natural dye it makes sense to purchase it through the mail. You may also need to purchase a mordant. All that said, browns and yellows are the easiest to do with natural dye. Onion skins make one of my favorite brown dyes… its a lovely warm brown, sort of a chestnut color (it varies with mordant). You will need about a bag full of the papery skins. Another one that is very easy to make is walnut. Just get a large container (like a Rubbermaid storage bin or trash can) and put in old black walnuts from the trees and water. Let it sit for a couple of weeks… it will STINK! But after you strain it you will have a very lovely dark brown like a sepia. Both of these colors will stain permanently. Wear gloves and old clothes!

By chance, did Miss Lucy get to see the baby turtles? If so, what was her reaction?

I have the financial freedom for kids set; mine love it and have learned so much, so I’m seconding Mavis’s recommendation. Also, thanks for giving us a link to September’s book! ❤️
