I’m not sure how much of this I’ll get to, but this weekend I hope to:
-Rip out some of the basil and plant Fall flowers (I need to buy more flower starts before I do the rest, but I’ve had a hard time finding them)
-Rip out the tomatoes (and ALL the army worms *evil laugh*) and make fried green tomatoes and, if I feel like it, bag all the ripe tomatoes to freeze (we already have about 40 lbs frozen)
-Rip out beans and plant broccoli
-Do laundry
-Decorate for Fall (didn’t get to it last week)
-Reorganize the freezer and cabinets to see if I can make room for all the food I stocked up on (I likely can’t, so I also plan to spend some time cursing and questioning my life choices)
-Make chili (for dinner and to freeze)
-Make banana pudding (mostly to use up eggs)
I’m currently caffeinating myself so that I can get started on all this.

I’m laughing in solidarity with you, Mel, as I always overbuy for the freezer, and then spend 30 minutes shuffling things around, questioning my life choices. 😉
Linda says
Yep! Me too! I literally laughed out loud at that one thinking about how many times I’d done that also!!
Mel says
I’m not sure how exactly, but it all fit! And I am definitely not freezing more tomatoes when I pull the plants–I have 60 lbs frozen!

This is a reply for Mel…..
What are you doing get rid of the army worms from your soil? They bed up for the winter.
Mel says
I’m not sure yet. I’m mostly focused on getting through this year, so I haven’t thought about next year yet. We’ve never had a single army worm before, and this year they were everywhere. We usually add beneficial nematodes and did not get to that this year, so we’ll probably start with that. They also seemed to prefer particular varieties, so I might make a note of which ones and skip them. I added a really cool trellis system that arches across the raised beds, so I may also hang a bird feeder from that to attract more Cardinals (the Cardinals are typically the extent of my pest management).

I was going to suggest beneficial nematodes as well. Arbico Organics has a good selection on their website. It looks like the green-labeled box is the type intended for army worms. Good luck!

I laughed at your trouble fitting all your food into the cabinets. Both my husband and I are over stockers now and sympathize with the cramming ritual! Have you tried storing canned goods under furniture yet?
Mel says
Unfortunately (or maybe luckily?) none of our furniture allows for canned food storage, but I’ve tried pretty much everything but that. Amazingly, it all fit! I still don’t know how exactly, but I reorganized our entire kitchen in December and designated two lower cabinets for canned goods and shelf-stable stuff, and I haven’t done a big stock-up since. But, I decided I did not want to have to go to the grocery store for more than the occasional carton of milk this Fall, so I stocked up on everything, and I’m astounded that it all fit. I’m really excited that I might be able to do this on a regular basis now!

I can’t even get to making a list (a/c out and we are having a small heat wave), but I am always happy to hear what others are doing.
