Found a good deal on apples and want to stock up? Check out my tips for How to Store Apples for Winter or Pin it for Later.
Sweet bbq applesauce chicken – Have you ever cooked your chicken in applesauce? If not, you’re missing out! This recipe takes BBQ chicken to the next level. Plus, the applesauce doesn’t overpower the chicken or make it too sweet {as I had originally feared}.
And lastly, this recipe for a Spiced Applesauce Cake w/ Caramel Glaze is pretty much the BEST WAY EVER to use up applesauce. :} Get the recipe HERE or Pin it for Later.

Wishing you, the HH and Lucy a wonderful day.
Mavis, what does HH mean? Is it happy husband, handsome husband, hardworking husband? Curious minds want to know.

Its a picture-perfect Saturday in Alabama! I plan on cleaning out my car and then a few inside chores this morning and then I hope to sit in my swing and read this afternoon. Hubby is grilling for supper too!

I hope you can find hubbard squash! I haven’t been able to find any winter squash yet, and I’m not sure why. I feel like I can usually buy it by now, but I’ve never paid attention to the exact date. Our CSA still has corn and summer squash, so we might have had a longer summer growing season than usual.
I’m spending the weekend finishing up the last of the freezer meals. There are probably one or two meals I’ll make and freeze at some point later this Fall, and I eventually need to process the 60 lbs of tomatoes in my freezer, but this weekend is basically it for stocking up and freezer cooking. Ideally, I’d get to some house work as well, but one thing at a time.

I even tried to get hubbard squash seeds last year and they were sold out {so weird!}. No luck today though. Only butternuts, spaghetti and kuri squash.

Market Basket in MA has all sorts of squash on sale for $0.59 a pound starting tomorrow. It has been from a farm in Western MA in years past.

Thanks Aimee!

We have been traveling in Maine for the past three weeks, and it is so beautiful! We understand why you love it here! Being from Iowa, it is a big change for us. I am a long time, silent follower of your blog, and enjoy all your articles!

Why are you on the lookout for hubbard squash? What do you usually do with them?
Mavis Butterfield says
Pies, roasted, and for baking.

And squash is good eating as a substitute for potatoes, etc. We had butternut tonight. Yum!

Do you have a preference for blue or green? I see so many different varieties available
Mavis Butterfield says
The blue hubbard squash is my favorite. 🙂

Do share your pantry organization for those of us who also stock up for winter.
We have another month of hot weather but chance of rain end of next week.
Mavis Butterfield says
I think I will as soon as I’m done. 🙂

For today:
1) Laundry – 2 loads
2) Finish last 3 kitchen towels for Etsy shop
3) Run to Target to pick up order
4) Pick out something to wear to church tomorrow (hope it won’t need to be ironed . . .)
Pretty easy day for me . . . but Grandpa will have a busy day! Granddaughter and Grandpa are building a chicken coop for the new chicks. It was his idea to get baby chicks . . . .

Just had to pop on to say: I can’t believe how many great/awesome photos you get of Miss Lucy!
The Puggle Princess is just too cute for words.
It’s an errand day for me. Hoping it isn’t too much of a time drainer, because I’ll spend the rest of the day outside in the garden. Right now, the squirrels and wild rabbits are making me crazy!

I canned another batch of salsa this morning. After that, I did some yardwork, then enjoyed some leftover chili and now am getting ready to play a board game with friends at 2pm. Productive and fun day. Who could ask for more?

I put boneless chicken parts in a pan, cover with applesauce, sprinkle with cinnamon and bake. Sometimes I use peaches instead of applesauce. When I use pears, I use ginger instead of cinnamon. All are wonderful! And so easy even I can do it. 🙂
Sue says
Where did you buy the outside appliance used to cook the applesauce ?
Mavis Butterfield says
Amazon. Here is a link to the one we purchased back in 2018. I love it! https://amzn.to/3i9XYwh

1) Banking in a town 45 min away. Yes, rural life here.
2) On local FB site, a lady offered up free raspberry and blackberry canes as she was thinning hers. I took 6 of each.
3) Planted above canes right away.
4) Sold an item on ebay and got paid within last hour. Will package up to take to post office on Mon.
5) Try to finish the last book in the John Puller series of David Baldacci (“No Man’s Land”).

Mavis, I got a recipe book from the library yesterday and have already ordered my own used copy! It is a keeper and has loads of info on where to buy food in Maine…..The Maine Farm Table Cookbook by Kate Shaffer.

Today felt like fall, finally. Yesterday we had a little storm with thunder and rain. So I thought today would be a great day to make your chicken noodle soup. It’s a keeper recipe! Spent the afternoon binge watching Downton Abbey again and started knitting a pair of socks for my SIL who’s battling stage 4 breast cancer. I want her to have warm cozy feet this winter.

Hey Mavis! After reading your blog last week about freezer cooking, I took your inspiration and got busy stocking my freezer. I’ve been working outside the home more than I normally do and having meals done is going to make my life a lot easier in the evenings. I made your Sweet & Sour Meatballs, bacon wrapped meatloaf, and tomato basil soup. I added my Taco Soup, chicken enchilada and chili and now have a variety of meals ready to go. While re-arranging the freezer, I found leftover Mississippi Pot Roast so today we will be having the Leftover Mississippi Pot Roast soup you’ve posted. I’m really looking forward to trying it. I am loving your recipes. They contain standard pantry items and I really love that about them. Thanks for all your great ideas!!

Wow Denise, it sounds like you’ve been busy!! Isn’t pulling ready made meals out of the freezer the best? Good for you. 🙂
