Today I wanted to share two photos from One Hundred Dollar A Month readers.
Lissa liked how I was getting free “chicken scraps” and decided to ask her local grocers for the extra produce scraps. Here’s what Lissa had to say about some reclaimed produce she was able to collect recently.
“I found one small local grocery where the produce guy sets aside a bag of stuff each week – usually lettuce, corn, strawberries, and a few tomatoes. And then another local small-chain co-op type store where I go in once a week and can pull produce from their to-go-to-compost bins. The selection here is very hit or miss, but always fun!
Since starting this journey, I have had so many fruits and veggies available to me at all times, and I have tried so many new vegetables and recipes. Who knew I would like leeks? Or ever make my own marinara sauce? I hardly buy produce at all anymore, usually just things like onions and carrots or if something is on a really really good sale. I am so happy that you brought this option into my world, it has had such an impact on my lifestyle!”

Holy tomatoes Batman…
Check out what reader Desiree had to say about her recent tomato harvest.
“Hey there Mavis! Last night we had a freeze warning, so of course that meant picking everything and anything in the garden. 2 1/2 hours later these are the tomatoes I brought in. This is not all I’ve harvested this year, this is just what was left. Our favorite was the Purple Cherokee, it was so sweet and delicious!
I definitely will be growing heirloom tomatoes again next year. Time to make salsa, diced tomatoes, and some tomato juice, then after the others ripen, we’ll be making more.”
– Desiree, I am TOTALLY JEALOUS of all your tomatoes. WOW! Good job lady, good job!

Lissa, are those 9 pomegranate’s?! My daughter’s LOVE them!! Good variety of produce!

Those look awesome. Especially the free pomegranates! I only wish my grocery would do this – it’s a huge store and the only affordable one around for many, many miles so they go through produce very quickly. And everything that starts to go gets put in scratch & dent for a reduced cost. Which means I’ve gotten huge bags of bananas, lettuce, etc for crazy cheap but never for free. By the time the good stuff like strawberries are officially chicken scraps there isn’t a mold-free one in the container.
Lissa says
They ARE pomegranates (0rganic)! The only thing “wrong” with them is that they are on the small(er) side….so not “worth” the $3 a piece that the store wants to sell them for?!?! No problem in this house! Nom nom nom!
btw Mavis, I feel like a rockstar for being featured on the blog 😉
For those who have been discouraged so far, I probably asked at 15+ places before finding the 2 I get produce from. Also, I was excited to see last week at QFC that they had “slightly damaged” apples for sale $1/3 apples and cheaper bananas. Anytime I can get produce for less than sale price and the stores are making efforts to decrease the amounts they are throwing out, I am happy. (and yes, I did buy 2 bags of Honeycrisp “damaged” apples for $1/3 which = $0.66/lb. 🙂
