Yesterday I was driving down the road when I saw a small neon sign that read “Yard Sale” so I pulled in. There were two simple tables set up with a few housewares and a couple of tools. Not much.
As I turned to leave I spotted the old bushel basket and asked “how much do you want for the basket?” The lady said $2. So I snatched it right up. As I turned to leave I noticed the old dog house and asked how much it was.
It’s Free. And I’ll even deliver it if your close by the lady’s husband chimed in.
Free? Heck ya! Delivered? Double heck ya!
Lucy must like it because she spent a good 30 minutes sniffing her way around the house and them went in and did the same thing. When the HH came home is only comment was “It looks sturdy” {which it is}. I’m pretty sure with a few coats of paint it will look pretty cute.
And the bushel basket? Yep, Lucy liked that too.
So what do you think?
Did I get a deal for $2, or do you think I wasted $2?

Score! I know with some elbow grease, you’ll have that dog house looking amazing.

If you use it it’s always worth it. What color you going to paint Lucy’s house? She really is a camara hound.
Maggie says
Treasure for sure!

How about a lovely pink?

Bushel basket, yes, definitely.
Dog house, well, only if she’ll use it! IME doggies won’t live in houses where others have lived or, especially, done their business…Though I’m sure it will be cute (scrubbed down and painted) regardless 🙂 I

$2 seems a lot for the basket. Or maybe it’s sturdier than it looks.
Lisa says
I wouldn’t have paid $2.00 for the basket myself.
My dogs don’t use doghouses (indoor/outdoor dogs, but sleep in our bedrooms), but free is good if Lucy needs one! Make sure to wash it inside really well with a bleach solution. You never know what the former resident may have died (I assume that’s why they didn’t need it anymore) from. It looks just Lucy’s size!
I look forward to seeing how cute you make it! I can just see little shutter and new shakes on the roof!

The dog house was definitely a good find, however, If Lucy is in the yard all day or at night, you might want to think about investing in a Dogloo. Overstock and a few other places run sales, routinely. We have two large dogs. We have a fenced in back yard and they are outside 24/7, as we have indoor cats. They love their Dogloos. We put pine bedding inside, for comfort and to increase the warmth in winter. I can’t remember what they are lined with, but it is something that is self insulating. I love my dogs, so I figure they’re worth it.

By the way, bleach is toxic for animals. They don’t need to be around it or breathe the fumes. Antibacterial soap would be better for cleaning.
Lisa says
But a “bleach solution,” what I suggested, is fine. A solution of 1/10 or even 1/32 is recommended when cleaning pet areas. Then let is air out in the sun for a few days.
It is especially important to disinfect wooden dog houses, since the Parvo virus can live a long time. Of course, Lucy is no doubt vaccinated, but it’s good to mention in case other readers haven’t vaccinated their pets.
Another option is to reseal the wood well. Paint will do it, but if the dog’s a chewer the wood should be disinfected first anyway.

I meant to mention, I have two indoor only cats. I also have three large dogs who are indoors more often than not. Dogs do not have to be exiled to the yard if you have cats! I always wondered, what’s the point of having pet dogs (working farm dogs are a different matter altogether) if you just keep them outside 24/7? We are their pack leaders, and dogs thrive on pack interaction.

Treasure! But nothing’s as great as the princess dress.

My dogs are not exiled, Lisa, they are just not imprisoned in a very small space. They love to run and and they have not grown up with cats. My cats would risk injury. These are very big dogs and very rowdy. My house would be in shreds. If you are angry about the bleach thing, so sorry. I was told this by a vet. We have play time with my dogs and see that they have a lot of family interaction. I realize some people are very sensitive about criticism, but it was meant constructively , I assure you. I would never deliberately try to hurt anyone’s feelings or try to be judgemental, as I am sure you wouldn’t either.
