I stopped by the Goodwill on my way home from running errands the other day and spotted this rather nice dinning room chair for $3.99 + tax. The fabric seat was a bit stained and the chair really was not my style, but it was in good shape, so I snatched it up.
I had been on the lookout for a good, sturdy chair for my daughter’s desk {which I bartered with Girly Girl for earlier this summer} and I knew with a little paint and fabric, I could make this thrift store find work. After all the chair was in great shape and about 10 times better than the folding chair she had in her room. 😉
I knew we had a can of black spray paint in the garage, so after I removed the seat cushion from the chair, Â I sprayed 2 coats of paint on to the chair and left it outside to dry.
The bedding and drapes in my daughter’s room are grey and white, so when I popped into the Joann’s fabric store I was hoping to find something on sale that would work so this $3.99 chair didn’t turn into some huge and crazy expensive project. 😉 Luckily their home decor was on sale for 60% off and I was able to snag the 5/8 of a yard that I needed for $9.99 + tax.
When all was said and done I spent about an hour working on this project and $15.33 for the fabric and chair. I think it fits perfectly in her room, don’t you? Finding good furniture at thrift stores can be a bit of a challenge sometimes, but if you hang in there, eventually you’ll find what you’re looking for.

Well done, Mavis! Love the chair, and I especially love how shiny it is. I am in the process of taking an unused bedroom that is right beside my too small kitchen and making it into a second kitchen/butler’s pantry/craftroom. This post has inspired me to try paining that old tired shelving and make it look beautiful and fresh. Thanks!

Beautiful up-cycle on the chair. I read a decorating tip once that said every room needs a little bit of black. That chair turned out awesome!
Mavis says
I’ve read that too in a magazine somewhere but I didn’t think I believed it. Until now!

Well done! I love what you did with this chair – very contemporary, cool. I found a large, beachy, light turqouise blue glass bottle at Goodwill last weekend for $9.99… it looks great off to one side of my fireplace. It would have cost me $30 to $60 new, in store. Nothing beats a great Goodwill find!
Mavis says
Agreed. Goodwill is the best!

I remember reading the dress post when you bought it. What did you end up doing with the beautiful dress? Did it move with you to your new house and survive the downsizing? We (your loyal readers!) need an update on the dress story!
Mavis Butterfield says
I gifted it to my friend JJ’s daughters. 🙂

That chair turned out great! Did you not have to sand first before using that paint? Our dining chairs are a yard sale find I repainted. I’m embarrassed to say how long I spent sanding and priming if it turned out to not be necessary. I do love the chairs though.
Mavis Butterfield says
Nope. I just wiped it down and sprayed. 🙂

Love your blog up here in northern Canada. I hope you don’t mind me going off subject
? I do have what might be an odd ball question. So here goes… What is the difference between what’s called the chalk ink markers and using normal chalk?
Thanx again. Blog on!
Mavis says
Laurie, get question. I love the chalk ink markers because you get the look of chalk without the mess! Plus, they don’t smudge or smear like chalk. They go on just like a marker, but look like chalk. Love them!
