For Christmas this year, I am putting together a couple of batches of dried orange peel potpourri to give to neighbors and friends. Then, all they will have to do is dump the back into some water to simmer–filling their whole house with holiday goodness.
Ingredients {recipe makes enough for one bag of potpourri}
Handful of Dried Orange peels
1/2 cup Rose Hips
1/2 cup Uva Ursi Leaves
2 Tbsp. Whole Cloves
1 Cinnamon Stick
1 Tbsp. Allspice
2 Dried Apple Slices
Directions
Add all ingredients to a bag. When ready to get your smell on, dump the bag into a pot of water and simmer on the stove top.

Where do you get the leaves in your potpourri recipe? Thanks

I made this! It smells wonderful. I’m glad I didn’t omit the apple; I got everything but that from San Francisco Herb Company (including orange peel, 1/4 c. per batch). Dried apples from Trader Joe’s rounded out the scent.
I thought I bought regular treat bags, but this recipe looked scanty in them. I bagged double portions, almost 3 cups, even though one simmer’s worth seems good to me. Next time I’ll hunt for smaller bags.

I love giving homemade potpourri as a gift. I hope your peeps enjoy it.

They did! I got compliments. Thanks, Mavis.

How do you dry the orange peels? I don’t have a dehydrator.
Mavis Butterfield says
I just collect them on a cookie sheet I leave on top of the refrigerator.

I have a mesh bag (that I got basically for free from Walmart when I bought a small bag of rocks for another project) that I place the orange peels in and hang from the rear view mirror. It deodorizes and gives my car a nice citrus scent. Takes at least three days. When the scent is gone they are usually dry but for extra dryness you can wait a week where they will be very hard.
Haven’t used them for potpourri yet as I am actually here looking for ideas for my dry orange peelings. Probably will use them as fertilizer for my plants first.

Citrus is not good for worms, so it may not be the best choice for composting.
