Just a few more days to go until the big day. 🙂 Even though it will only be two of us {well, actually three because Lucy is like a tiny human} I am still very excited about Thanksgiving this year. The prospect of a big mid-day meal and then having all those delicious leftovers to ourselves and not having to basically cook for an entire week, I don’t know, it kind of sounds like a treat to me.
I’ve tried a lot of recipes over the years, but when it comes to Thanksgiving, I’ll admit, I do have a few recipes in particular I like to make every year.
Here’s a list of our favorites, and if you have a favorite recipe you’d like to share, let us know in the comment section below. We’d love to hear about them.
Wishing you the best of weekends,
~Mavis
- DIY Turkey Rub Recipe – This actually works great on all sorts of meats, turkey just happens to be my favorite.
- DIY Pumpkin Spice Recipe – No need to buy pumpkin spice mix at the store when you already have all the ingredients in your pantry.
- Home-style Scalloped Potatoes – We’ve been making these for the last 9 years. Who knew scalloped potatoes could be so rich and creamy?
- Amberlina’s Sweet Potato Casserole– A family favorite. Why mess with the best?
- Twice Baked Sweet Potatoes with Walnuts – For those years when you want to see a little more flair on your plate.
- Carole’s Grape Salad – It isn’t the prettiest thing to look at, but HOLY COW is it ever good.
- Broccoli Cashew Salad – Probably our second favorite side dish salad on the planet {Carole’s Grape Salad is #1}
- Grandma’s Cherry Cola Jell-O Salad – Thanksgiving is all about traditions and familiar foods and it wouldn’t be Thanksgiving without this Jell-O salad on the table.
- Zoe’s Old Fashioned Coconut Cream Pie – It tastes like you walked into an old school diner and ordered a slice of pie from a waitress named Flo. Pretty much the best thing ever. Enough said.
- JJ’s Apple Crumb Pie – Because who doesn’t like an apple pie? {Weirdos, that’s who}
- Pumpkin Pie – Use the recipe on the back of the can! 😉
- Cranberry Apple Pie – Something a little different and always and always a big hit when I make it.
- Pumpkin Cheesecakes– A nice alternative for pumpkin pie and the leftovers freeze well too.
- Simple Cheesecake – Another great dessert that goes along way and freezes well.
- Old Fashioned Egg Custard– Something light that works both as a side dish as well as a dessert.
- Pineapple Buttermilk Pie this is one of my all time favorite custard pie recipes. Perfect for the holidays and goes well with turkey and ham.
- Pumpkin Chocolate Chip Bars {Vegan Friendly and freezes well}
- Spiced Pecans – Because who doesn’t like a nut?
- Pumpkin Gingersnap Ice Cream – This is worth breaking out the ice cream maker for. Thick, creamy and very decadent. It’s one of my favorite homemade ice creams to make. Get the recipe HERE.
- Turkey Soup – It’s like having Grandma in a can. Sooo good, and so easy to make.
- Turkey enchiladas are one of my favorite ways to use up leftovers, because they are completely different tasting than your standard holiday meal. You almost don’t even realize your still having turkey.
- Turkey Casserole with Mashed Potato Topping – Pretty much anything with a mashed potato topping is a hit in our house. 😉
- Turkey Salad for Sandwiches – Doesn’t everybody eat a turkey sandwich for lunch the day after Thanksgiving?
- And Don’t forget the Cranberry Apple Jam with a Hint of Orange: With cranberries, apples and a little orange, this is the jam you need to have on hand for the day after Thanksgiving to slather all over the leftover bits of turkey goodness.
Gobble Gobble! 🙂

Years ago the local sub shop- Capriotii’s https://www.capriottis.com/shop-menu/ – created a sandwich just for the Thanksgiving leftovers called the Bobbie – turkey, stuffing, cranberry and mayo on a sub roll. Yum! I’m hungry just thinking about it! Easy to make at home but you have to have good thick sub rolls.

Not to be argumentative, but our sweet potato casserole is similar to yours………..except we add a layer of fresh cranberries between the potatoes and the crumb topping.
It is fabulous.

I never would have thought to use cranberries. Totally going to try that next time.

We put leftover stuffing (sausage/mushroom/onion/garlic cheddar cheese bread pieces) in a bowl, mix in some beaten egg and cook it in the waffle maker. Crispy and delicious.

Chicken pot pie here. I will never forget a Thanksgiving dinner of years ago. The fella and I decided to go try a local Mexican restaurant. We got the last available table. The food was delicious. The staff that day were all members of a church congregation and very cheerful. We went to pay the bill and were told. “Your meals were free. We do this every Thanksgiving because the restaurant owner goes to our church and her way of giving thanks is to share her cooking with restaurant patrons at no charge”. Sadly the restaurant closed about two years later. However, we will never forget the experience and the kindness of Rosita and her friends.

I made your Coca Cola Jello a couple of years ago and now my adult sons request it at every holiday meal! Thank you.
I make creamed peas with mushrooms and water chestnuts as a side dish. I’ve never heard of anyone else making it. It seems old school and is always served at holidays. And always some type of homemade rolls have to appear.

We’re traditionalists when it comes to Thanksgiving.
But, I do like to try something new each year.
We tried the Pioneer Woman’s Chocolate Marshmallow Pumpkin Pie a couple of years ago and it’s a keeper. SO GOOD.

I also spent way too much on one of those silly little butter turkeys from Winco: https://www.fox4now.com/you-can-buy-turkey-shaped-butter-for-thanksgiving/.
I can’t wait to eat on Thursday … and Friday, and …
