While I was working in the garden yesterday I snapped a few photos of our pallet gardens.
The strawberries we transplanted last fall have begun to come back to life and are leafing out really well now. So much so that I may need to divide them again here pretty soon.
The buttercrunch lettuce we transplanted a few weeks ago are beginning to take off as well.
I know it’s hard to believe, but in about 60 days this pallet will be filled with 16 heads of lettuce. And that my friends is the best part about gardening if you ask me. Watching things grow. It always amazes me how something so small can turn into a full sized plant in just a short period of time. I LOVE it!!
And so does inspector Lucy. 😉
Okay, so maybe she just loves being outside.
This year I think I’m going to stick to growing lettuce and strawberries in our 6 pallet gardens. Last year I grew chard, celery, beans and a few other odds and ends but the strawberries and the lettuce did the best overall… so that’s what I’ll be growing in our pallet garden this year.
Keepin’ it simple. That’s my motto for this summer.

Thank you SO much for posting about the pallet garden idea last year. After I saw your posts, my DH and I managed to get a few from our local greenhouse because Mr. Greenhouse said he was just going to burn them anyway [oh, the horrors of all those perfectly plantable pallets we couldn’t rescue!]. I’m sticking to lettuce in mine this year, too, and maybe radishes–that’s what grew best for me; tomatoes not so much. The argula might have done okay, too, if DH hadn’t pulled all the seedlings up when he was helping me weed [note to self–put HUGE SIGNAGE in front of any new veggie plants to make sure DH knows they aren’t weeds!].
Happy planting!

Hi Mavis, LOVE the pallet gardening idea. My wonderful hubby planted a very nice, and big garden for me but he filled it up and I still have other things I wanted to plant. So, I started my first pallet garden today and filled it with strawberries. I was wondering about spacing. The greenhouse where I got the strawberries told me to space them 18 inches apart. That doesn’t leave much room for a pallet garden. I see in your pictures that you have planted them very close…looks like about 4 per row. I bought a variety of plant called Everbearing. I only planted 2 plants per row to be safe. Do I need to be that conservative with the spacing for this variety or can I go ahead and fill it up like yours? Thanks for your help:-)
