Sorry for the lack of posts today everyone but it’s just to nice to be inside on the computer. 😉
Lucy the trouble puggle and I just harvested 3 pints of strawberries from our pallet garden we planted this spring.
Actually I think there may have been closer to 4 pints buy Lucy wouldn’t stop eating them, and really, who am I to complain. The fact that our puppy loves her fruits and vegetables is a good thing, right?
I’m not sure if we’ll end up eating them all or if I’ll actually get to make something with them. I suppose that’s one of the hazards of having a garden, right? Eat it fresh while you can I say!
The strawberries are not the only thing growing in the pallets right now…
We’re gearing up for round 2 of the pallet garden green beans.
And take a look at the lettuce, it should be ready in a few weeks if the temps don’t get to hot around here. I don’t know about you, but I think I might be ready for fall.
I need a break! 😉
How is your summer garden holding up?

I harvested green beans, crookneck and scallop squash, a lemon cucumber, a few green onions, a few baby carrots and a small bowl of tomatoes yesterday and today!! Even though our garden is tiny, this is the most produce we’ve ever gotten. I’ve grown much of it in my pallet, which I love, and I’m grateful for your inspiring blog. Love it!!

Glad to hear about your harvest Katie, baby carrots are the best. 🙂

My garden is very small this year, but this is the first year I’ve ever had one. I was also gone for a month and had to plant late. I’m not complaining though. I have picked a few cucumbers, all the mint and basil I need and, before pulling it to make room for cucumbers, plenty of spinach. I have carrots growing as well as some leaf lettuce. I love thinking that I wouldn’t have the food in my hands if I hadn’t planted a seed like two months ago. Such a good feeling.

Mavis, you mentioned round two of green beans planted in pallets. I would expect you to be growing bush beans, but the photo looks like a vining variety… I have vining green beans this year and am enjoying a bumper harvest! I planted them on tee pees for the first time and they are going crazy! Today I Frenched, blanched and froze 10 quarts! Last week I cut and froze three quarts and there doesn’t seem to be any end in sight! 🙂 What are you doing with yours?
Mavis Butterfield says
Round 2 of beans in the pallets are for drying. 🙂

Everything looks great! My soil is very rocky and I dug and worked on it as much as I could and removed a great big pile of rocks from my 6 x 4 bed. My very first bed, yeah! Groundbreaking. Seed potatoes went in there and I will watch them to add soil and leaves over it as they grow. Well, I still had seed potatoes left over so I laid them on the ground and put a kallillion leaves over it. Do you think this will work as a potato tower or did I need to put dirt over them too? Just on the ground, not in a tower. And not straw, but leaves. Have you used leaves instead of straw?

Do you find that the pallets give slugs a place to hide and shelter? Especially with the strawberries?
Mavis Butterfield says
Actually no. I wonder if it’s because of the rough edges of the pallet?
