Where to Get Fresh Produce
Ethnic grocery stores can help save you a ton of money when it comes to reducing your food budget. Since ethnic markets are they’re typically not in high real estate areas, and don’t have as much overhead as all those big box stores {employees, displays, huge refrigerator cases, advertising, etc.} they are able to sell their fruits and vegetables for a lot less. That’s why I think it’s a great answer if you’re wondering where to get fresh produce.
Greens and seasonal fruits and vegetables are especially well-priced. I’ve seen a bunch of kale going for $2.99 at my local grocery store and yet at the Asian market, you can buy a bunch of the same leafy greens for just $0.79.
It’s crazy.
I don’t know about you, but I LOVE it when I find a good deal on fruits and vegetables. And now you know where to get fresh produce! If you don’t know of your local ethnic food options, a quick search will help you find one!
An added bonus is that your local ethnic food market probably has TONS of interesting options you’ve never cooked with before. A great source of inspiration and ideas!
Where do you find the best prices on fruits and vegetables in your area?

I use a lot of fresh ginger. A LOT. Keep some in the freezer, eat a sliver (or 4) a day for arthritis pain/inflammation relief. Also use for cooking. There is this Asian market about 20 minutes or so from me that sells fresh ginger for .99 cents a pound vs big box stores $2.49 and up. Guess where I get it from? Best thing about it: a friend owns the market and always pulls me the best looking root on delivery day and bringa it to me!

Marvel Food and Deli in Auburn and Tacoma WA – Russian market with great produce prices.

Agreed on the suggestion of Marvel Deli. H-Mart in Federal Way, WA is another good source.

It’s funny you should write about this today because I was just thinking about checking out the Asian market and an Indian market near my office. When I lived in Saco, ME there was an Asian market in Biddeford that had the best produce prices around. The added bonus was that everything was ripe and ready to eat whereas everything I buy in the grocery store needs to ripen before I can use it.

Portland has quite a few but I haven’t ever been to one.

Great idea!! I saw this recently when I went into a new Mexican market by my work to kill time at lunch. They had great prices and it looked good.

I shop at our local Asian markets when I need particular ingredients for a Chinese or Indian recipe. I also buy soy sauce there – it is usually cheaper than the regular stores. I have never thought to buy fresh produce there – just didn’t occur to me. I will have to check it out the next time I go.

Another reason the produce is such a good value at these markets is that they aren’t committed to only buying top shelf produce. They buy seconds that may not be as pretty but still taste great. Love love love ethnic markets!

That must be jack fruit in the top picture. We saw them yesterday at Publix and it is thee most interesting thing I have ever seen in the produce section. Look like the price there is .99 a pound which proves your point since at Publix they were 1.69 a pound.

Only one here on the Cape is trader Joe’s that I’m aware of. I’ve found their prices much better than Stop and “Steal” as I’ve been comparing lately.
I’m really resenting the price increases which usually rise in summer because of the visitor influx, I mean we are absolutely inundated with summer populations, everywhere.

Have you tried GOL market in Hyannis. I haven’t been there in a while but they used to have some produce at reasonable prices.

I shop the Hispanic markets as well. Usually there’s a bakery nearby to get fresh pastries that aren’t overly sweet.

I agree. I enjoy Mexican pastries because you can get the flavor of the food, not just overly sweet. A friend runs a French bakery and it’s good, it’s too sweet for me and she knows it. Lol.

I love ethnic markets and just looking at all the different flavors and products that they bring in. I’ve got a lot of Polish delis by me with all sorts of sausages, cheeses, candies, jellies and other interesting things.
