Those Mr. Clean Magic Erasers are lifesavers. They take crayons off walls like nobody’s business. But they are spendy little things. Lucky for you, there’s a cheaper alternative.
Have you ever heard of melamine foam? Well it’s the main component in those handy dandy Magic Erasers. And while a name brand magic eraser can run you as much as $1 a piece, a 50 pack of melamine foam will set you back around $6-7. Pretty good savings for something that works just as great.
Have you ever used melamine foam instead of a Magic Eraser?
Could you tell a difference?

I have used these. I don’t think they last quite as long as the magic erasers but the cost savings makes them worth buying instead of the pricey name brand ones.

Putting that on my wish list in Amazon to help me get up to the $35 free shipping level (I don’t have Prime)

It’s $49 now if you don’t have Prime 🙁

News to me! I’ll give it a try.

I bought 50 of these almost a year ago and still have some. I can attest that they work just as well to get crayons, markers, and other kid-created stuff off walls and furniture. I like them for baseboards, the dreaded nail polish spill, and even the inside the fish tank. They fall apart more easily than the name brand, but they clean just as well. I sometimes use 2 for a job that would take only one name brand–but at $6 for 50, I have a few to spare.

I tried these and hated them. They disintegrated very quickly. I wanted to love them because of the savings, but I hate all of the little pieces they leave behind.

Please do some research on both sponges if you haven’t already. They are not biodegradable and the residue is harmful to pets if they breathe or lick it. This is the same melamine that sickened so many Chinese children, albeit it in higher concentrations than Lucy could probably consume from residue or airborne particles. I stopped using these after a pulmonary MD advised that anyone with compromised lung function should avoid them.

The Dollar Tree has a generic magic eraser that works very well. They’re $1 for a pack of 6. They’re smaller than the name brand.

I bought a pack of 50 and found them to dissolve quickly. They are really only good for one job and then they are trash. I have used other Mr Eraser knockoffs and found they are better than the melamine erasers.

I bought these after you posted about them another time. Yes, the disintegrate, but I feel like it’s ok since they are so cheap. I use one with a few squirts of diluted castile soap to scrub the tub. However I didn’t know melamine can contain formaldehyde. Aw. Sum. Now what?
And regarding biodegradability- literally everything will eventually biodegrade, so seeing that in a produce description is pretty meaningless :-/

The 3year old used markers to write on 3walls. I used a wet magic eraser and cleaned a small area until the sponge was into crumbs. Then I tried another sponge and used it dry. That cleaned off two walls. So I found out that it works just as good dry and the sponge lasted way longer.
