Today will mark the FOURTH week in a row we’ll be stopping by Head Tide Oven for their “Pie Friday” to pick up… you guessed it, a pie. They opened up for the season in mid-June and we haven’t missed a week yet.
Anywho, last week as I was dishing us up a slice of the cherry rhubarb pie we had just brought home, my husband turned to me and asked… If you were on a dessert island for an entire year, and you had to choose between eating pie or cake, what would you choose?
At first I didn’t get the question. Was it just one type of pie or cake or was a new one going to magically appear each day? {Details, I needed details!}
Pressed for more details {and in a rather loud and annoyed voice} he said ANY KIND OF PIE OR CAKE. What would you choose… PIE or CAKE!?
Well, duh… of course said PIE!
Fast forward to 4pm that same day as I sat down for my second slice of cherry rhubarb pie… I started to think about why I’d choose pie over cake and I came up with a few good reasons…
- Pie is light {where cake is filling}.
- I always want to eat the WHOLE slice of pie {where with cake, I’ve had my thrill after about 3 bites, but I’ll still eat what’s on my plate and always seem to regret it 20 minutes later}.
- Pie seems like it’s a totally healthy treat… I mean, it usually has fruit in it {and almost always, Vitamin C} and cake, well, not so much.
Where am I going with this? I don’t know. I guess I’m just super excited about getting another pie today… and I want to know what you’d choose if you could only have one. So what do you think? What would it be… Pie or Cake?
~Mavis
Kelli says
Pie all day, everyday. The variety of fillings…Sweet, savory, meaty, eggy, fruity. You get it all! Besides, I love a good crust. Cake, meh. Cake for lunch? Cake for dinner? It’s unseemly!
Lynn says
Pie! Hands down!
Barbara says
PIE!!!!
Pamela says
Mavis, this is an important question! I am a cake lover surrounded by people who always pick pie for their birthdays. I married into a pie loving family and many of my children have followed that path. One time a brother-in-law chose yogurt pie for a birthday dinner! Is that even a pie? Such a waste!:) I do think your points are thought out and give me something to ponder. I feel like if I am ever presented with this decision, I will be able to make an informed, rational decision. Whatever the dessert, it must be served with coffee!
Mavis Butterfield says
Seriously, a yogurt pie? I can’t even imagine.
PJ Cartier says
Decades ago I used to make a pie that used a Graham cracker crust and a filling that was a mix of yogurt and ‘Coolwhip’ or whipped cream. The flavour was in the yogurt, e.g. strawberry, and I added more fruit or berries to up the taste. It was a summer thing. Loved by all who ate it. And by the cook [me] who didn’t have to work with a hot oven on hot days.
Dee says
That reminds me of a Philadelphia cake. You use any kind of dry cookie/biscuit and mix it with butter for the crust. And for the filling: cream cheese, whipped cream, gelatin and any flavor or fruit you like
Julie says
Pie, of course.
Katie says
Hmm…. this DEPENDS. My instinct is to say cake. Because cake is often chocolate and pie is often not. BUT it has to be good cake. I tend to like richer, denser cakes with things like ganache and multiple layers. I don’t want any light, grocery store birthday cake that’s been sitting out. I want decadent DESSERT. But if the cake I was going to get wasn’t up to snuff then I’d probably want pie. I think there’s less room for error regarding my tastes with pie.
JoAnn Moran says
Pie all the way. Cake is too rich and sweet for me. I love a fruit pie, and of course there’s crust, which might be my favorite kind of bread.
Robin in WI says
If it was a simple, no-frills chocolate cake with chocolate frosting (my fave) vs a best-I’ve-ever-had apple pie from The Little Farmer by Lake Winnebago, that’d be a tough one. I’d probably pick pie as the orchard is only open 4 months out of the year.
Karen says
CAKE
Pam E-P says
I would take that loaf of bread over either!
Deborah R. says
That was my exact thought as I was reading this and looking at those pictures.
Rebecca in MD says
I agree, I would rather have that lovely boule of bread than cake or pie.
Connie says
Pie
Carrie says
100%, not even a discussion point in our house, PIE! Cake is just way to sweet, even my kiddos scrape off all of their frosting. Being from the PNW, foraging for blackberries is always a reason to make pie for breakfast in the summer. Our logic is that many kids eat pop-tarts as a treat so homemade fruit pie has to be a way better option. Cold, day old pie is the absolute best when the fruit has soaked just a bit into the crust.
Mavis Butterfield says
Totally agree about the cold pie the next day!
Kathy in PA says
Cake is my favorite. Especially sheet cake! Ha!
Ramona says
Pie of coarse, didn’t even have to think a nano second on that choice.
Jennifer says
CAKE ALL DAY EVERY DAY
Hawaii Planner says
Cake, without a doubt. I’m not much of a pie person
Elle says
Pie Pie Pie… unless of course, I am presented with a piece of homemade German Chocolate Cake! That is the exception!
Kim says
Pie!!!!!!!
Jennifer says
PIE!! We even served pie at our wedding instead of cake – apple and olallieberry!
Jennifer says
Is that a typo or is there really an opal liberty? I’m not being funny, I really want to know as I’ve never heard or seen the word and I’ve read cookbooks like novels.
Jennifer says
Well, spell check made me look dumb – olallieberry
Jennifer says
Yes, it’s real! It’s a lot like a blackberry. I live on the central coast of CA and they grow here (not in the wild – just a local farm that plants them!) If you check out avilavalleybarn.com and click on the bakery tab, scroll down a bit and you will see the berries in a pie. Shaped like a blackberry but a bit more reddish in color. So sweet and yummy! A local bakery made our pies, but we have bought at the barn as well.
Carla says
Yes=, Jennifer. I live on the California coast, too, and have an olallieberry plant in a huge pot. The fruit from it are divine. However, it has nasty thorns and likes to spread easily outside its pot. I’m hesitant to plant it in the ground. The berries make it worth while. Delicious. I don’t get enough for olallieberry pie, sigh. Maybe I’ll have to visit Knots Berry Farm sometime.
Joyce says
Pie, I always say I only like 2 kinds of pie…hot or cold.
I never eat cake….just do not care for it.
Brianna says
Such a seriously tough question! I love all the various pies and it is versatile…sweet, savory, nutty, etc. I am still bothered today about someone eating my huckleberry hand pie on Sunday and nobody has confessed. I am still thinking about the pie. If it was a piece of cake, I would be over it in a day. Someone ate my pie! I do bake my kids’ birthday cakes and decorate them to the nines with whatever they want, but if there is leftover cake after we celebrate it does not appeal to me. I actually will pick through the cake and scrape the fondant, frosting, and edible decorations off. I just want cake and filling. I think ice cream goes better with pie vs. cake too. Definitely a pie choice for me.
Joely says
Pie…but can I put frosting on it?
Ashley Bananas says
As the late great Marie Antoinette once said….let them eat cake!
Nan says
Hmm I like both but I’m particular- I love a coconut cream pie with whipped cream or a coconut/Italian cream cake. If it’s a fruit pie, I want a scoop of ice cream with it. So answer is DEPENDS!
Jennifer says
I don’t care for crust – except graham cracker so Key Lime is probably the only pie I like. Plus, if I’m going to eat a sweet as a diabetic, its going to be a splurge, so cake for me. If it has icing, even better. Then, if its Red Velvet or Caramel, I’ll scrape the icing off and eat ONLY that. If its my mama’s Cream Cheese Pound Cake, ill undertake it so its soft on the bottom.
While going down memory lane, I remember my mama used to make a blueberry custard pie with a store bought pie shell and I loved it, but I wouldn’t eat the crust. In fact, most of her pies had a graham cracker crust. She made a mean Pineapple Banana pie that I loved too.
Nancy in Eastern Washington says
I’m not a cake or pie lover. But give me a good cookie – and I’m all in. So pie or cake, I’d choose neither one. But cookies and ice cream – oh yeah.
SC says
Pie, but it’s been a long time. Maybe this weekend! 🙂
SC says
Yep! We had homemade blueberry! Yummm!
Suzanne says
I’m pretty sure that you meant to type “desert island” but the fact that you typed “dessert island” really adds to the theme of today’s post. I think a dessert island sounds much better than a desert island.
I’d choose pie over cake, most likely.
Regina martin says
Yeah I’m over here still tryna figure that out too. May e she did mean dessert island….that would be cool and would include cake AND pie
Laura reinhart says
Hummingbird cake
Breakfast
Lunch
Dinner
Glenda says
Hummingbird cake is the best!
Linda T says
WHAT is hummingbird cake, please? If you have a recipe, that would be sooooooo great!
LindaT
Mable says
Pound cake but with no frosting.
Tiffany F says
PIE!
Pam says
Cake cake cake!!!
Linda Sand says
My favorite deserts are pumpkin pie and carrot cake although cheesecake (which is usually shaped like pie) comes third. How could you possible expect me to choose between those? 🙂
Wendy says
Pie, without a second thought.
Marcia says
I’m not really into either pie or cake. But assuming either were gluten free, then I’d go with pie – because, yeah. You can get fruit or vegetables in pie, pretty easily. (Though GF carrot cake is delish…)
Lori says
Hi Mavis, I too would choose pie. There are so many different kinds of pies. Some sweet and some savory. So I would never be bored. Cake on the other hand is usually sickening sweet to me. So it’s pie for the win!!
Stephanie says
Well on a “dessert” island you wouldn’t have to choose – so it’s all of the above! Cheers to a wonderful place.
Tracy says
Oh, cake, hands down! Obviously, I like some cakes far more than others, but cake all the way. I actually don’t even like pie. Any of ‘em. At all. Ever! They’re always way too sweet for me. Now, just pie crust alone is fantastic. Lol
Connie Wheeler says
Gotta be Pie !! You’re reasons are RIGHT ON !! That pie you’re eating right now sounds delicious !! I’m a big fan of Strawberry Rhubarb so I’d love to try the Cherry Rhubarb.
Sounds like the Head Tide Oven is a great place to visit !!!
Marti Clark says
Pie definitely but it has to be a fruit pie. I don’t do cream pies at all. I never even tasted the cakes at my children’s wedding. That’s how much I dislike cake.
Heather says
Definitely pie. I realize that I could eat the frosting off the cake piece and just a few bites and I would be happy. I usually eat the cake piece to be polite.
Elizabeth C Smith says
I love pie and angle food cake and mousse. I don’t prefer “devils food cake” so it’s a very detailed/involved question for me! Are you offering Angel food cake with strawberry’s and whipped cream or yellow cake with chocolate frosting up against the pie??? Chocolate mousse pie is my favorite. Then Berry pie and then angle food. This is a very hard question!! I think just having a dessert island would be easier.
JOAN RICHARD says
Without hesitation, Pie~!! There is nothing like it. You can eat Pie for dinner or for dessert. Very versatile lol
Dianne says
PIE!!!!! Definitely PIE!!!! – not much a fancier of cakes – I don’t care for icing.
Leslie says
Pie, without a doubt.
Linda Practical Parsimony says
CAKE, but
I would only choose chocolate pound cake with no frosting, just a bit of confectioner’s sugar sprinkled on top. I do like chocolate pound cake with lemon curd I make.
Cheryl says
Cake over pie all day every day…and I absolutely hate rhubarb. Blech…sour! I don’t care how much sugar and fruit you add, it’s still blech! 🙂
Jamie B. says
Pie!
Laura L. says
Always, CAKE, with it’s delicious sweet buttercream frosting. Oh yeah!
Mrs. M. says
Pie… fruit, chicken, or venison. You get the idea. 😉
I saw that you quit Facebook but noticed there’s still a link on your page. (Just FYI.)
I had facebook for 1 week about 15 years ago. I set it to private, my sister’s friend’s friends were asking to friend me. I quit. That’s not “private.” It took me longer to get off it than I was on it because there’s that 2 week waiting period where they don’t actually delete you until it’s over.
For those who want to get away from FB, but feel obligated to stay due to school postings, etc., become an advocate for other sources… research and volunteer to get it started. There’s got to be better technology than FB and no one wants to go back to the “phone tree.” Haha!
Mavis, thank you for your blog!
Kirsten says
Cake, but only from an authentic German bakery like I had in Philly growing up… their cakes were never very sweet, and many of my favorites are fruit-based.
Diana says
CAKE!
Although, there is Gram’s pumpkin pie to think about… and cherry pie… and berry cobblers. But they’re usually too filled with sugar for me.
Homemade cake, nothing from a box. No buttercream icing, tho. Whipped cream icing, lol… German chocolate cake is one of my favs. Then there was Gram’s yellow cake with chocolate icing (made from melting semisweet choc chips, add a touch of powdered sugar and when melted, pour it over the cake and let it harden – YUM!)
Amber says
Pie. While I can appreciate a good cake, it is definitely overly filling!
