Pretty much all of yesterday was spent in the garden {big surprise I know}.
I had the Handsome Husband pick up a truckload of garden soil so I could finally fill the giant empty space next to the greenhouse.
Lucy loved playing in the dirt. She was having so much fun digging that I had to bring her in the house until I could get it all leveled out and planted.
At first I was going to plant green beans in the space, but then I figured I’s need to wait 2 more weeks before planting bean seeds {it’s still a bit too chilly at night} so I went ahead and planted some red cabbage and cauliflower starts I had in the greenhouse instead.
According to my companion chart, Swiss chard looks like a candidate to plant in the center rows. I’m sure the chickens will be thrilled when I tell them. Ha!
How has YOUR weekend going so far? Please tell me you don’t still have snow on the ground.

If I could only have one gardening book on my bookshelf this would be the one. The Gardener’s A-Z Guide to Growing Organic Food By Tanya L.K. Denckla. This book is loaded with growing methods of practically every vegetable the backyard gardener is going to grow in their garden. I received this book several years ago and it’s still the one I use when I have questions.

So glad to see you are still planting more cauliflower and cabbage. I was worried mine wouldn’t mature before the hot weather arrived but since you are just putting more in maybe I’m wrong. I’ve never grown either myself before. I’m looking forward to fresh cauliflower!
Here in Portland, OR we are warming up into the low 80’s by the end of next week. Maybe your area will get some heat as well.

Mavis, when you plant a raised garden how deep is your soil? I am still new to gardening and have been under the impression that the plants roots have to go down deep to become established. From the looks of your raised gardens it doesn’t seem to need too deep of soil. Your garden rocks!

Please do tell Mavis!! I’ve been wondering this myself. This week I need to build our boxes and I am so lost on how deep I need the soil-

Yes Mavis we still have snow on the ground and it will be a couple of weeks before we can even think of planting anything…Enjoy yourself and hopefully we will be able to get planting soon!!!

Wellllllll…I have to say, yes…there still is at least 5-6 inches of snow covering every one of my gardens.
It has been melting fast these last 2 days, since the temps have reached into the lower 60’s here (northern Minnesota). But it is going to be a few weeks before any outside planting happens here yet…unless those temps jump into the 70’s and stay there.
