Hannaford $5.39
Thanks to a stock up trip last week at Trader Joe’s, all we needed to pick up this week was a gallon of milk and some bananas. Grocery stores are such a time suck, don’t you think?
Pretty soon gardening season will be here and our trips to the store will be even less. Which is always a plus in my book as I’m not a fan of shopping. Trader Joe’s though, does make things easy with their ready to heat meals though. So I might miss that.
This past week we filled up on big salads, Kung POW chicken, leftover soup, a ridiculous amount of avocado toast and a few other things.
It was a good week in my book. Simple meals and more time to spend on my current project: getting all my wool dyed and patterns drawn so I can enjoy this summer OUTSIDE.
To everything there is a season. And right now I’m still in the keeping your head down and plowing ahead mode. But soon there will be warmer weather and sunny skies and green. Lots and lots of green and so I’m pretty excited about that.
How about YOU!? Are you starting to get excited for spring? Are you ready to start shopping your garden rather than the grocery grocery stores too?

Lori commented: Mavis I would love to try any of your teas. Especially the corn tea. We have a ladies tea time. It meets every other week at 1 pm. We have it at this time because it’s nap time for our we little ones. It started out as ladies tea, the two dads joined and we have the best time talking about kids, relationships, and work, over tea.
Whenever someone in the group goes on vacation they bring back a new or different tea. I would love to surprise them with this new tea. Thanks for always thinking of your followers with giveaways!
Anita commented: Crust of overcooked rice and Solomon’s seal tea? What’s not to love?? Ha Ha. This is such a fun giveaway. I promise to share them if I’m a winner.
Anissa commented: These are all so odd. But, I think the Onion Tea would be good for congestion. Sort of a home remedy kind of vibe.
A big giant THANK YOU to everyone who took the time to enter the goofy giveaway. I promise the next one will appeal to more people. Ha!

I have started my garden (one of the benefits of living in the south). The cucumber and corn seeds have already poked up thru the dirt. (waiting on the green beans, pumpkin and watermelon seeds to poke thru) My red leaf lettuce, kale and romaine are all doing well – I might even be able to get some cuttings soon. This week I will buy the rest of my plants and get them in the ground. Spring has definitely sprung here!
Holley says
Oh I HOPE Lori lets us know what her group thinks of the corn tea!!!
Anissa says
I’m not Lori, but I can share a review of the onion tea. Or Mavis feel free to grab a few as a sample before mailing!
Definitely the most different thing I have ever won, but looking forward to trying!

If you want another delicious Trader Joe’s idea, get a pack of the lentils (in the fridge section), a tub of bruschetta, and a tub of feta, mix it all together, eat on toast or with crackers. (No need to heat!) great way to up your fiber for the day. It will last you a few days, i usually portion it out and don’t mix together until I’m ready to eat it.

Tamara- that lentil bruschetta recipe sounds delish!
Anyone have recommendations for keeping squirrels out of the garden? Our neighbor puts out two corn cobs for them everyday and the squirrel population has increased dramatically. The squirrels are digging everything up even my flower pots! Ate all of our black raspberries last year, too climbing through the canes. Any recommendations to keep the squirrels out of our garden and container gardens would be appreciated. Thanks!
Lucy says
I’m bewildered that someone would put out food for squirrels as destructive as they can be! Is your neighbor one that can be approached about feeding the squirrels with you telling your neighbor that the squirrels digging up your plants?
Lana says
They hate the smell of orange peels but it only seems to work for my pots of flowers. We have lost the battle with keeping them from destroying and eating our food crops. We aren’t even going to bother to plant this year.
Nancy in Alabama says
Try sprinkling your plants with cayenne pepper. I buy the large containers at Sam’s Club. You have to replace it after a rain but it has helped.
Jen Davis says
Red shatterproof Christmas balls hung on tomato plants deter birds and squirrels. Hang them when the plant is blooming. Squirrels try to take a nibble, then give up. We had zero problems with squirrels or birds with this method.

I would love to read a review on your cooker/stove. Just interested in the pros and cons for you. I have in my mind that it would be too hot to keep on in the summertime.

I spend all winter sketching how I’m going to do my Gardens during the summer I have been nursing basil and other things all over the house for a couple months now and can’t wait to get everything outside I will go shopping again tomorrow at a lawn and garden store to look for more flowers I have a lot of my seeds for my vegetable garden and my herb gardens already
Judy says
Thanks so much for sharing the lentil recipe. I love all the ingredients and can’t wait to try it. I hate to shop, except for groceries.
I like to try new things and plan my meals around what I find. I like ginger tea and am on the hunt for onion now.

I bit the bullet 2 weeks ago and ordered all my seeds for the garden. I made sure everything was a heritage strain, with no GMOs, no modifications. It seems I have a lot fewer problems with the old-fashioned things rather than ‘new and improved’!. They got here on Saturday, so this week I will spend my little bit of free time planting them in biodegradable bags filled with a mixture for starting seeds.
Sunday I made a wonderful Bourbon Braised chuck roast, which I bought fresh from the butcher. It’s a wonder, you tell them how many pounds you want and they cut it right in front of you. I spent $196 this week on meat and goodies. 12 lbs of ground beef, 7 lbs of ground pork, 6 1-inch thick pork chops, 4 pork steaks, 4 lb pork shoulder roast for bbqing, 3 lbs short ribs, 6 ribeye steaks, 2 3-lb chuck roasts, 2 lbs smoked braunschweiger, 2 lbs black forest bacon, 2 lbs black forest smoked sausage, 2 pkgs stuffed clams, 2 pkgs potato and cheese pierogies, 2 wheels of polish sausage, 3 jars polish sauerkraut, 2 jars sugar-free strawberry jam, a box of mocha iced coffee….. and separately, $30 on 8 quarts of strawberries!
Not sure what meals will be this week, it’s going to be a busy one…
