If you follow me on my Instagram page then you probably already know that I finished my latest whale rug yesterday.
I started my pod of black whales rug on March 15th, so that means this one took me about 3 weeks to complete. The rug is HUGE {a little over 38.5″ x 60”} and it’s the largest rug I’ve completed so far.
I am still shocked I was able to complete the rug in just a few weeks time. I guess when I don’t have any other distractions, I can hook at a pretty good clip. Who knew?
One of my goals this year is to create 4 new rug hooking patterns and here we are, the middle of April and I’m already halfway done with that goal.
I’m tempted to start giant rug #3 this weekend just to see if I can hook that one any faster.
But I should probably finish up a few other projects like, oh I don’t know… Finish cleaning up the barn, my indoor studio and the thing I’m dreading most… Painting the wall in the bathroom with all the pipes on it first.
Yeah, I should probably finish a few other projects before I start another one. But we’ll see.
Hobbies, they’re pretty rad. They keep you off the streets, out of the clubs and away from the tanning beds.
We should all have hobbies, don’t you think?
Here’s hoping you can stay out of trouble this weekend.
Take it easy,
~Mavis
P.S. The pattern/kits for the pod of black whales rug can be found in my Etsy shop. The finished rug has already sold. {Hooray!}

WOW! It’s GORGEOUS! My other favorite rug of yours was the large beehive — I just love it!
Mavis Butterfield says
Oh, I really liked that one too. I should do another beehive/garden rug.
Kim says
I dearly loved the bee hive rug!

Cars? I don’t remember you ever discussing cars! Is that yours? It’s awesome! I bet HH researchs cars thoroughly!
Mavis Butterfield says
Yes. It’s a Toyota FJ40. The HH bought it for me for our 30th anniversary. It totally makes up for all the “corn” years. 😉

That was going to be my question too. It looks so perfect in front of the lobster house too (noticed in another picture of yours). Super cool!

I don’t know anything about hooking, is it hard on your hands when you put a lot of hours into it?
Mavis Butterfield says
No, not really.

Mavis … your humor makes me laugh out loud (I’m not cool enough to say LOL!!). Thank you for this blog – I enjoy it so much!

Your whale rug is absolutely beautiful! You are an accomplished artist and I’m amazed at how quickly you can finish your work. The red Toyota is pretty rad, too. My 40-year anniversary is coming up and I’m thinking a red Toyota should be on my wish list!

It looks fantastic! No wonder it sold fast! Congratulations.
Love your vehicle- great shoot prop.
How do you chose a price when selling?
Is it by the cost of supplies plus an hourly time rate or by supplies and square inches, etc.?
Mavis Butterfield says
I have a formula I use based on square inches for my pricing.

Mavis,
What year is the car? I need to know!!!!
Mavis Butterfield says
1982, they pretty much look the same from 1958 to 1984 with slight changes over the years.
Annette says
Love it! I was hoping it was a giveaway, heh heh.
My favorite part is the flag.
Joely says

Love the rug! It’s beautiful!
Now for red question. What kind of shoes are you wearing in the picture with your car. They stood out for me because of the red. I love red!!!
Mavis Butterfield says
Back 70.

If I put all the work into hooking a rug that big, I’m not sure I’d be able to sell it – I’d probably want to keep it. It’s gorgeous – makes me want to take up hooking (rugs, that is) as a hobby. Between quilting, gardening and making doll clothes for the great-nieces, I’m not sure when I’d fit it in, but it’s an intriguing idea.

Your rugs are beautiful. Glad you took a picture in front of your jeep. It shows how big the rug is. You say large and I didn’t know how large it really was. Something to compare it too. Love your e-mails. Have followed you for years.

It’s BEAUTIFUL!!!!!!!!!

We had that save vehicle. It was a 79 Toyota Landcruiser, that’s what they called it then. Great for driving the dunes on the Cape but the salt did a number on the chassis and undercarriage. The whale rugs are your best yet. Can you tell me what size cut you typically use?
Mavis Butterfield says
8.5
