Yesterday morning the HH and I got up early and drove to Fort Williams Park to see the Portland Head Light. If you’ve never been there before {or are planning a trip to Maine this summer}, you’ll want to be sure and add it to your to-do list.
Not only is the 90 acre park a great place to walk, but the setting couldn’t be more beautiful. We’ve been there multiple times, and my only tip is, get there early. Before all the tourists {and tour buses!} arrive. 😉
Early morning is a magical time in my book. It’s quiet for starters, plus you really get to imagine what life would have been like centuries before. And if you go early enough, you’ll practically have the entire park to yourself. It’s peaceful.
I love walking around to all the lookout points. I see something new everytime we visit.
The construction of the lighthouse began in 1787 with just $750 start-up. The U.S. government took over the management of all lighthouses in 1790 and allotted an additional $1500 for it to be completed.
If you go during normal visiting hours, there’s also a Gelato and Lobster food truck available near the light keepers cottage. We also noticed a few more in the parking lot.
Current price for a lobster roll at the park? $23.99. Which is actually on the low side compared to a few other places we’ve been to around here over the years.
Summer in Maine. It’s pretty spectacular. I hope you get to visit!

I grew up in Biddeford, Maine and although I am in California now I still visit my sister in South Portland every August. I agree, the Portland Head Light is a must see.

If you ever have the opportunity to make the drive up to Prince Edward Island I would highly recommend it. We visited several years ago from Oregon and the drive from there, back down through Maine was lovely.

Yay! We’ll be in Portland, ME and Bar Harbor in late July on a cruise before we head to Canada, Iceland and Greenland. Can’t wait!

Nice blog about the lovely Portland Head Light and surroundings. Almost as beautiful as the Cape but then I’m partial to this place I’ve called home since 1969. Are you and CO staying in Maine?

I think that lobster food truck was actually featured on Somebody Feed Phil. Great place to visit.
