A trip to California is not complete without a stop at In-N-Out.
A trip to San Francisco is not complete without dessert from Ghirardelli Chocolate Factory.
What do you think the dog ordered?
Tourists. They’re everywhere.
China Town.
Golden Gate fortune cookie company in China Town is a necessary stop.
All time favorite color combo. Grey with white trim.
A $20 cab ride to visit the San Francisco conservatory of flowers.
Only to find out if was closed. 🙁
Toes in the sand.
A stroll down the garden paths at Filoli Mansion.
The realization that you can never have too many desserts.
Have you ever been to San Francisco, California? What’s your favorite stop?

My favorite west coast city to visit! We once dreamed of retiring there, but there’s no way we could afford it these days. Prices have gotten crazy there. I love the area around Union Square, not the big name places (well, except for Gumps) but all the little stores in the area. Love Chinatown, still love Fisherman’s Wharf, love visiting Alcatraz and Angel Island, love driving across the Golden Gate, love riding the cable cars, standing in front and hanging on for dear life . . . OK I love everything about SF!!

I used to live in the bay area. My friends and I would take the train from Palo Alto to the city on Sunday afternoons. For $5 we could sit in the highest balcony of the Opera House and watch the SF Ballet. That was a long time ago, but I’ll always remember it.

Fisherman’s wharf where you can get that wonderful sourdough bread as well as Ghirardelli chocolates, then a hike in Muir woods to walk it off.

My daughter live in San Francisco. She is a chef and owns her own restaurant. It is called Picnic on Third. It is in the SOMA section of SF. They are open M-F from 7-7. Their main meal is lunch. The menu changes everyday. It is a farm to table restaurant serving local in season produce. Pictures of the daily fare are uploaded onto the internet by 11 am each day. It is amazing!

Wow! I wish I had known about her restaurant we would have totally ate there. By the reviews online it looks like a total hit! 🙂

Ferry Building, produce/grocery shop tourism in Chinatown (so many awesome and unusual veggies!), Chrissie Field &Fort Point, all the new stuff going on up at the old Fort Mason site. SF Moma opened after a years-long major expansion, I haven’t been yet, but friends who have say it’s awesome. When my kids were young, we used to feed the flock of Cherry headed conures (parrots) that flock to Ferry park, but I haven’t been in years. (Watch “The Wild Parrots of Telegraph Hill” before you do. It’s interesting and very sweet). Alcatraz has a marvelous audio tour, sort of like a 3-D Ken Burns documentary. Gosh ,I’ll leave it there, but there’s just so much. San Francisco is my closest real city, and very near and dear to my heart.

Thanks for this post and the additional suggestions in the comments. It’s my favorite city and this has re-inspired me! I’m going for business in July and can extend my trip with personal travel IF I can find a hotel under $350 a night. Last time I went 4 years ago the average hotel price was $200. Yeesh.
I’m actually considering Air b&b but a little concerned about safety. Has anyone used them?
Jennofer says
Air bnb can’t guarantee your safety–so it kinda doesn’t matter if anyone has used them, unless you stay wherever they stayed. Check out reviews. And there is probably no cheaper solution to where to stay unless you’re willing to go cheapy in an outlying town and rent a car/pay for parking while touring SF/pay bridge fares… It ain’t easy.
I live 25min north of the GG bridge. And I never tire of the GG bridge and the views of the bay. I have enjoyed MOMA, fishermans warf and pier 39 (where Gump’s is), Boudin bakery (famous sourdough), Giants games, the Ferry building shops and the farmers market on Saturdays, One Market bar for a fancy ($$$) dinner/drinks, Hakkasen restaurant on the financial district, Ozuyma for sushi ($$$), Trattoria Contadina in north beach, hikes along the Marin headlands (north end of the GG), Sausalito along the main drag, Alcatraz, Angel island, and the list goes on. Bring a coat even in summer!!!!
