Other than obsessively checking the Realtor.com website daily for houses I’ll never buy, and planning out everything I want to include in the kick-arse garden I’m going to have someday, there is really only one other thing I swoon over these days…
A few years ago I filled out an opt out form online to reduce the junk mail and catalogs that seemed to be filling our mailbox on a daily basis. And since then, it’s rare that I find a catalog in there when I go to check the mail.
These days the only things the mail carrier leaves for us are stupid credit card offers {which no matter how hard I try I can never seem to get rid of} the weekly grocery store flyer, and an occasional bill.
One thing we still get though, is the Sundance catalog. And I totally don’t mind.
If money didn’t matter, and I had to choose one store to shop at for all my clothing for the next 25 years, I’d HANDS DOWN pick the Sundance catalog. Which, really, is kind of weird because I’ve never actually owned a piece of clothing from their catalog before. And honestly, I’m not sure why I still get their catalog since the only thing we’ve ever ordered from them has been a set of glass blown hurricanes we bought like 15 years ago and a beaded tree the HH bought me {which I adore} one year for Christmas 10 + years ago.
But their clothes…. or rather the complete outfits the models wear make me stop in my tracks every time the catalog comes in the mail. It’s like getting a letter from an old friend. I see it in the mail box, smile as I pull it out and then quickly run inside, make a cup of tea and settle in on the couch before opening it.
This Victoria Cardigan caught my eye. It’s begging to be worn in fall with tall boots and jeans don’t you think? I don’t know why I like the cardigan so much. I like crew-neck sweaters and sweaters that button up the front. Wearing a sweater that was open like that and hanging down the sides of my chair as I sat would make me a little crazy after about 2 seconds.
And yet, still love the look.
This sweet juniper dress in navy blue. I loved it. It’s pretty and feminine and I think it would look good on me. But then I remember I like fitted dresses and although the necklaces help make the outfit I realize I don’t own any, and if I did, I probably wouldn’t wear them because what if they got caught on something? Wouldn’t the constant shifting of the necklaces bother me as I walked? And if I wore my hair down {which I rarely do} wouldn’t the necklaces get caught in my hair?
It’s like I LOVE the outfits… but then after a moment or two I break them down and rationalize why I wouldn’t/couldn’t/shouldn’t buy them.
This cira henley, isn’t it cute? The sleeves are pretty fantastic, don’t you think? I want it. But don’t you think because the sleeves are thicker/a different texture than the rest of the shirt it might wash weird?
Okay, so this totally doesn’t look like something I’d wear, but I like the overall look {minus the lace on the bottom of the tank top}. The lime green is fun and I adore dark wash jeans {they last so much longer!!!}. The flowing waters scarf though…. I’m not a scarf girl, but I want to be. But tell me something, what about when you want to eat? Do you take off the scarf first? Wouldn’t the little balls on the ends of the scarf fall into your food? Am I over thinking this? Do people eat with their scarves on? Do they take them off?
Am I the only one who thinks about these sort of things? Am I really that socially awkward? What is wrong with me? Gaaaaa! Why can’t I be someone who wears scarves!? I want to be someone who wears scarves!
I LOVE LOVE LOVE this bird of song long sleeved tee-shirt. No necklace, no scarf, just a tee-shirt and jeans. I could pull that off. The brown leather belt adds a nice touch. I like that too. Although it would have to be a plain one, because HELLO…. the whole where does the metal prong thing go on the belt would just be too much for me to handle.
And last but not least… these calendula boots. If I was the type of person who paid $318 for a pair of boots, they’d be on my feet faster than you could say Bob’s your uncle Fanny’s your aunt. But I’m not. So no fancy well made boots for me.
Being a plain Jane can be so hard sometimes. Easy, yes, but boring at the same time. I wish I could do it. I wish I could wear something other than jeans and black tee’s and feel comfortable. The thought of having to pick out an outfit though {like every single day} is just so overwhelming to me..
What is my problem? I know what I like, what I think would look good on me, but still, I just can’t do it.
Please tell me I’m not the only one out there who’s like this. Or if you like clothes, as in putting together outfits, what is your secret? I’d love to know.

I like Sundance, too, though I’m more of an LL Bean girl. They have a store at the mall, and I drool over some of the beautiful clothes. They are so expensive, though, that I can barely afford to walk into the store. I try to keep a capsule wardrobe, and I try to simplify my shopping to basically just LL Bean and maybe Lands End or Eddie Bauer. I don’t feel bad not going for the cheapest clothes because I don’t buy a lot of clothes in the first place. I focus on what I like and on good quality, and then I reduce the amount I have.
My personal feeling is that you can be simple and boring, and it’s good to be frugal. But sometimes we can overdo it and turn it into an obsessive or guilt-ridden thing. Once in a great while, if you find something special that you love and can afford it. I think it’s worth buying and then using forever. You can even ask for it for your birthday or Christmas, if it makes you feel better. As someone who has spent a lot of money on thrift-store clothes that really didn’t match my style or make me look good, I think a few nice pieces is a better use of money.

That’s a pretty nice catalog. Eye candy is fun. Almost as much fun as seed catalogs.
I can’t give you any suggestions as I am a Big Plain Jane woman and I’d have to sew four of these together to fit me.
However, I can offer you a suggestion on the credit card application thing. You know how sometimes they send a prepaid envelope in with the offers?
Tear the offer card in two but leave your name and address legible. Stuff the prepaid envelope with everything you can find including the envelope the offer came in. Seal it and mail it back to them. After two or three months, they will figure it out and stop sending them to you. As the companies pay by weight to get return mail back, they will eventually stop. I did that a couple of years ago and I might get one or two of them a year now.
Or don’t stress over, tear the whole thing in two and throw it in to recycling and move on.
Or have horrible credit and no one but fingerhut will offer you anything.
IMHO
Lisa says
Hilarious!
We just tear off the offer part, circle the name and ask them to remove that name/address from their mailing list. We then use their prepaid envelope to mail it. We don’t get any credit card offers anymore and haven’t for years!

I do not wear scarves but my best friend from high school does. She takes them off to eat.
Mistie says
How in the world did you get inside my head? I literally could have written this, verbatim. You are so not alone or weird. I also love the Lands End catalog, because it is more “practical” and what I would actually wear, but still not spend the money on, lol.
That cardigan and those calendula boots tho….
Erica says
I really wanted to wear scarves, so I spent about a year telling myself that I WAS the kind of person who wears scarves every time I wore one. Now, I wear them all the time without it feeling weird. I take them off when I cook and eat at home.
Ingrid says
I love to put together outfits and (hopefully) wear cute clothes. I never spend much (I use thrift stores and major sales) and I go through and donate clothes on a regular basis. It’s just a fun way to express my creativity, like you do through your rug patterns, and gardening, and cooking, etc. – if you don’t love doing it, then don’t stress over it! (I do wear scarves and long necklaces all the time and when I eat I just turn them around backwards so they don’t dip into my food. If I’m ‘running around’ I just tuck them into my shirt until I’m done ‘running around’.) :o)
Delorise says
Talk about weird–I don’t “ever” wear solid color shirts/tops/ blouses (I’m not a big t shirt person) for the very reason that they show stains more than multi colored. Yeh, I tend to drop food or plain just get smudges on my tops. If that happens with a multi color top, chances are the stain can blend in and isn’t noticeable. I also think multi colored tops hold their color better than solids (that is based on clothes I have seen friends where- if the government gave me a grant I would gladly do a study to determine if I am correct- but alas I don’t see that happening). I also like to look at some catalogs and magazines and ponder just how sensible an outfit is to really wear. It seems when I hit 60 it became about still looking nice but comfortable– very comfortable.
kari says
Very cute clothes, but way too complicated for me. I can’t decorate my home, yet alone put outfits together. It’s not the way my brain works. So, I get what you are talking about. As for scarves, I try on occasion to love them, but find they get in the way. They do look cute, though!!
Rachel says
Scarves are the best. I wear them (or did way more when I was working and didn’t have small children) all the time and take them off to eat. The ones with the little balls at the end are cute buuuuut in my experience, balls fall off or they tangle the rest of the scarf when you wash them (I washed them once a month on delicate because if I took it off at a restaurant, it would smell like that restaurant) and so I love infinity scarves or any that don’t have those balls. You could totally pull it off!
Kristina says
I always pore over the Sundance catalogs for outfit inspiration, and I occasionally will buy something if it’s really unique or I want something for a special occasion. A lot of times in winter (not summer, I wish- it’s 110 here today!) the only thing that distinguishes my plain jeans and tee outfit is a colorful scarf and an amazing pair of boots. Their housewares frequently leave me cold, as it’s pretty inexpensive and relatively easy to find truly antique /vintage items.
Denise says
Mavis, You crack me up! For everything that you liked you somehow found a way to talk yourself out of wanting it. I tend to do that also if I really can’t afford something, although I do try to find similar outfits/pieces at thrift stores to emulate the looks in magazines and catalogs.
I do love to dress up and put outfits together, I blame it on my going to Catholic school and having to wear a uniform all of the time. Plus I do costuming for folks such as theater, burlesque and cabaret so putting textures, fabrics, colors together is my dream job.
You deserve to buy yourself at least one of those lovely items!
Martha says
Mavis, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE purchase what you like from the Sundance Catalog…..or you can wait for it to go on sale…..you deserve a nice new outfit. JUST GET IT!!! You will look beautiful in anything you wear. TREAT YOURSELF!!!!!!

Yes-I too swoon over the Sundance catalog. I once bumped into the Sundance kid himself-as a 17 yr old hiker temporarily living in Park City Utah. I was on his property-and he pulled, and asked if I needed help. I just stood there tongue tied. I am a tried and true Sundance loyalist. But-not the Sundance prices, so-WALA!! Poshmark came into my life.
You can buy used/new/gently used designer clothing for a fraction. Everything I have ordered has arrived and I have been pleased. My designer wearing lil sister told me about it-and she knows her stuff. Check it out-you can watch items that you love, you can make an offer, and after a bit-if the item does tell asap-they contact you with a great offer and reduced shipping. Cant go wrong with that!! Cheers-enjoy your shopping, even if it is just “internet shopping” as I often do. Place things in a cart, then step away….
Mel says
I wear scarves and long sweaters often. I go for long-ish jersey cotton scarves, so they drape nicely, and they’ve never gotten in my way. Infinity scarves also stay put. I don’t cook in them, but eating or working are fine. And the jersey ones also wash nicely and work in multiple seasons. The sweaters don’t slide over the sides of chairs either. More structured sweaters might, but I haven’t had an issue–they just drape across your lap.
The belt thing made me giggle. I loathe belts with holes and the flap in front that has to be tucked in, so I recently designed jacquard ribbon belts that adjust with a slider in the back and just clip closed in the front. I sewed a couple, and they are the BEST.
I usually have the hardest time finding clothes (especially pants) that fit properly. I recently found a brand and cut that fit, so I bought 20 pairs in different colors and patterns. I don’t think they’re made anymore (I’m shopping eBay and Poshmark), and I’ve never had pants fit and be comfortable, so I have zero qualms stocking up. Same with sweaters. I’m cold all the time at work, so I bought a bunch of heavy cardigans in different colors and styles. A bit pricey (even buying used), but so worth it.
Mavis Butterfield says
I’m all for stocking up on a particular clothing item when it fits well. Good for you!

Would never have guessed. Very cute stuff and eye candy for sure. Seems a little Boho/coustume like for your style but it’s just fashion. Have fun once in awhile.
Lissa says
Mavis, you always make my day. This post just made me laugh– not at you, with you.
Wendy says
Mavis, I’ve been saying that exact thing for YEARS now. If I was rich, and could buy my clothing etc… ANYWHERE, I’d get everything I own from the Sundance Catalogue!!
Julia says
You should get the flamingo shirt!
I’m funny about sleeve lengths. I love the look of flowing graceful sleeves that just let your fingertips peak out but who can clean the house and cook in that!!!
Heidi says
Or wash your hands! I’m always in the garden or kitchen and wash my hands many times a day. Every time I get a long sleeve shirt, I always end up with grubby, soggy cuffs. Or if you push them up, now I have saggy, soggy, grubby cuffs. I too have to remind myself that those cute outfits are for gals that don’t do much!

I loved dressing very similar to this. In high school. In 1973. Got married ’76, had 5 kids from ’78 to ’96. Preschool teacher and director for 30 years. Got used to wearing no jewelry but wedding and ear rings. Now caring for grandkids. My daily uniform is similar to yours, Mavis. I also love to dream of clothing and “dressing up.” But other than special occasions, that clothing just doesn’t fit my lifestyle. I do love to be creative, though, and I have found my new niche–Aprons! None of the frilly, cutesy kind. I love the early 1900’s version, at least knee-length, very plain, with a bib, sensible fabric like sturdy cotton, linen, even repurposed jeans. Although I am not brave enough (yet) to wear an apron when I go out, it is what I wear a large part of every day. And I am loving it!

From what I’ve read and seen on your blog posts, this looks like a job for Mrs. HB to assist with. She seems to have a fashion sense you are looking for and would probably make her feel great to help you the way you helped her with budgeting. Just my $0.02.
Heidi Bauer says
Hi Mavis,
I’ve been reading your blog for years, but I’ve never commented. I live in Utah and there is a Sundance Outlet in Salt Lake City which is online as well. Two rears ago, I bought some really expensive BedStü boots for $60.00! I just thought you should know. 🙂
P.S. Your Sunday goal review is my favorite post of the week. You inspire me with the way you can break your goals down and talk about the things you do daily or weekly to meet them. Thank you for making the internet a happier place for so many!
Heidi

Years, not rears! HAHA. 🙂

There is a Sundance Catalog outlet store right down the street from my house! I never go in because things are still very expensive, but discounted from their original prices. If you ever find yourself in Salt Lake City you should go visit!

Many years ago, I watched a clip of Andy Rooney on 60 minutes reveal how he would tear up credit card offers and cram them back in the prepaid envelope (along with whatever additional junk mail he could cram in there) and send ’em right on back. I still do that to this day when I get a stray offer. Lol
I’m a scarf girl for sure. I tend to gravitate towards solid colored basics and it’s such an easy way to dress up an outfit. I just don’t care for the fringe or balls on the ends. This is part of my ‘uniform’ that I incorporated after visiting my Dutch family in the Netherlands decades ago, when I noticed scarves as a common style trend. I no longer feel as uniquely styled since the trend took off here in the states.
Carrie says
I just drooled over the Prana catalog I received yesterday. I love their clothes and the few things I have are high quality, fit me well and fit my outdoorsy lifestyle. I don’t pay full price for any of it though.
gina says
I have yet to buy anything from Sundance since it’s kinda pricey but I drool over the pages every single time! I wish I could be a scarf girl too. I tried them, I really did, but it just felt “weird” to me-like I was trying to be someone I’m not? Probably just me!
Kellie R says
Ha! Challenging yourself to branch out a little and try clothing you love, but isn’t always “practical”, sounds like a good goal for next year. Sort of like the bakery and live a little challenges for this year.
Lolly says
Since I live in alabama, and it’s like 5,000° 8-9 months of the yr, I DON’T wear decorative scarves. But when the temps dip below 70°, I wear different scarves or cowls…most of which I’ve crocheted, but also some I’ve bought over the yrs. Scarves keep me toasty warm when I get chilled. We camp a ton over the fall and winter and early spring, so scarves/cowls are a must for the chilly nights and mornings! I love them, and have soooo many different colors. (The cowls are easier to eat with. But I also have eating issues with my long hair….and have to pull it back before eating, lol. My necklaces aren’t long/big enough to mess with eating.)
I’m also a jeans and tshirt kinda girl. I wear sandals in the summer, and cowboy boots each winter (with wool socks…keeps the toes toasty). And I like to have a great coat to wear. The scarves are my fun in winter….necklaces for the rest of the year. I usually have one great dress, too.
Ashley says
Hahaha – This is great! I do the exact same thing… At 35 I am learning to embrace my simple and practical style (aka lack of trendiness) and try not to go overboard on things I will not really wear.
I have only read a few of your posts, but I really enjoy your writing. I am also an INTJ, and preparing and revising garden plans is one of my favorite pastimes 🙂
Mrs. M says
Also an INTJ… what surprised me was it’s not real common. But, there were so many of us that follow Mavis’ blog! Such a small world.
My wardrobe is jeans and t-shirt, or jean shorts and t-shirts, depending upon the season. I even considered what I would be required to wear before returning to the workforce after being at home with our kids for 20 years! I have a job where I wear jeans, polo style shirt, and tennis shoes!
Carolina says
Mavis, your jeans and long-sleeve tee shirt wardrobe puts you in very good company, indeed. You have probably seen that Mark Zuckerberg also wears the same thing almost every day. When asked about it, he said, basically that he had more important things to do each day than think about and choose what to wear! And so do you. like keeping us informed and on our toes!!!
Mavis Butterfield says
Carolina, what was the name of those thrift stores near Rye again? You told me a while back but I can’t find the comment.
