The beauty of being a blogger is that I have a platform to share whatever note-worthy topic that pops into my head. Sometimes, the crazy stories I come across on the interweb or the random thoughts that pop into my mind aren’t really noteworthy at all {on their own}. They usually make me pause, laugh, or just plain roll my eyes and I go on about my day. So, without further ado, here are this week’s finds:
Can We Still Say Tough as Nails?
When people think about nails, they think about strength. Tough as nails is a saying I’ve heard a bazillion times. You can smash them with a hammer and they’ll withstand it. Now what if those nails were wooden? Would you still feel like they could so the job of the typical aluminum nail? Well a company out there sure thought so and thus the wooden nail was born! They are supposed to be super strong, but you can’t hit them with a hammer. But they do solve a few issues that aluminum nails cause like making recycling nailed up wood now possible and not causing staining and rust on wood surfaces. Now the big question: would they sell? Would you be apprehensive about buying wooden nails? Would it make you think they were too weak to do the job?
I’ve never been to Japan, but clearly I missed my opportunity to visit at the perfect time: after giving birth. I do remember the icky hospital food. There’s a reason food in US hospitals get such a bad rap. It’s mostly disgusting in my experience. Now granted, I haven’t been to many hospitals as a patient, so perhaps their are exceptions, but I’d bet nothing comes close to the food this woman shares after giving birth in Japan. Evey meal looks like it was prepared by gourmet chefs, and apparently it tasted as amazing as it looked. I mean just look at the one meal pictured above. Here’s what’s on the menu: Roast Beef, Mashed Potatoes, Kabocha, Lotus Root With Gravy, Corn Soup, Rice, Salad, Camembert And Raisins, Tiramisu, Fruit, Orange Juice, and Green Tea. Well now I know that the next time I get sick, the correct place to do it is in Japan!
I Could Watch This Video For Hours
There is just something so soothing about this video. Not only do I want to had right to that store and make one myself, but I love watching the scarves snatch up all that color so perfectly. It’s the coolest thing ever. Any of you tried this before?
Some kids ask for a puppy for Christmas. Other ask for a kitty. Some even ask for hamsters or lizards or gold fish. But Hissing Cockroaches as pets. Gag! Is that really a thing? I guess if you are in the market, you’ll want to take advantage of this sale. You can get 2 hissing cockroaches for $9.95. What a steal at less than $5 a roach.
And that concludes this installment of Random Goodness from Around the Web. Please make sure to leave your random responses in the comment section.

I think the wooden nails would be for carpentry projects where strength isn’t as important as visual appeal. Those projects you put wood plugs or filler in at the top of your nail heads to hide them.
The hospital food looks lovely and I wonder if it was part of her bill. When my first was born, hospital meals were not included as per my insurance, so I never ate anything there. My hubby was my food runner as well as a few visitors. When my other two were born, it was at a military hospital and I got a ribeye steak after both of their deliveries. Unfortunately they were both born after midnight and the steak meal was served for breakfast because I was checked out of the hospital shortly after lunch. I was there only 12 hours with 1 labor and birth and 18 with the other.
The cockroaches would be fun as a prank, but not a pet. I saw something once where people made living jewelry out of roaches and other insects and attached pretty leashes to them and decorate the roaches with gems. Lovely.

ACKKKK…the ROACHES!!! I have personal experience with one of those horrible bugs. As a teenager, at my parent’s home in Florida…was washing dishes. When I put the silverware in the draining cup thingy, I heard a strange noise. I peered into the cup, and there was the biggest, most ugly roach I’d ever seen in my life. We’re used to roaches in Florida, but this one was HUGE. Put two of those in the picture together, and that’s how big it was. I was home alone, and I knew I had to get that thing out of the house FAST. So, I covered the cup with a dishcloth, took it to the back door and threw the whole thing out into the yard. Never saw one like that again, and hope I never do. (Shivers…)

Scarf. remember making marbleized wrapping paper as a Girl Scout project one year. My mother was scout leader and she refused to do it again, as the clean up was done by the adults and it was very messy.

Strangely enough, I remember fondly the hospital food when I gave birth to my 3rd child. I think I have good taste, and the pasta fagioli was a stand out, along with warm, soft cookies. It couldn’t have just been post-pregnancy hormones, because my visiting sisters were gobbling down my meals and were equally impressed. Shout out to Beverly Hospital in MA!! 🙂

After having my first kid (10 years ago) my husband and I couldn’t wait to have another at the same hospital because the food was so good. They have a chef come in and prepare the meals right where you pick up your food. It was so good but not good enough to convince my husband for a 3rd baby!

The hospital meal in Japan was the one prepared for the mom right before she and the baby go home. New moms stay in the hospital for at least four days there, and the meal is just part of the service – it’s not something extra added to the bill. They have single payer health insurance in Japan, and the out-of-pocket cost for the delivery and hospital stay probably was only a couple of hundred dollars. My grandson spent eight days in the hospital there a couple of years ago, with IVs, special respiratory therapy and so forth, and their out-of-pocket cost was a few hundred dollars. I’m very jealous of how little they pay for the good care they receive.

My dear late Mama loved all animals. A few of my childhood pets: cats, dogs, rabbits, banty hen, ferret , cayman (small alligator), bummer lambs, an orphaned fawn, myna bird, canaries, zebra finches and parakeets, tarranchula and assorted small snakes. After I left home she added Matagascar Hissing Cockroaches. She wanted to bring them to me to pet sit. Love ya, Ma, but not a snowball’s chance in hell!

Oh ya, add mice, rats, hamsters, guinea pigs and a raccoon to that list.

And all kinds of lizards. We used to win “chameleons” at the fair. They had tiny red string leashes that were pinned to our shirts. Oh, and little red ear slider turtles as prizes, too.

We had a giant hissing cockroach as a class pet when I was in junior high. It was perfectly fine. I think it was named Miss Hiss or something, but it never actually did the hissing thing. It just hung out in its little terrarium.
By contrast, my college dorm was infested with regular cockroaches. We elected not to have our room sprayed for health reasons, so all the roaches seemed to move into our room when they sprayed the rest of the building. That was absolutely awful.

I am confused about a couple things on your blog. It seems you feel compelled to produce a blog every day, at the expense to your health, sleep and general well being. I don’t think the people who follow you expect that. I think you have many great things to share and I look forward to reading those items when you have the time to do it or something to share. We all realize that inspiration does not come everyday.
The other thing is all the ads to buy more stuff. Something I really enjoy is your discussions about downsizing, and living more simply without continuing to buy and saving money tips. It is hard for people not to be tempted to buy more stuff and incur more unnecessary spending when your favorite blog is full of advertising to buy more.
Lisa says
I don’t even notice the ads…just the content of the blog which I look forward to every day!
Julie P says
Love the blog and recipes, ads not even pertinent to me, but your health and sleep are more important. Get some rest girl!
But ….
So glad you shared the scarves, I have never seen this done, it’s amazing and so beautiful, I have a thing about scarves but as a previous reader, I am decluttering and downsizing so don’t need any more! Of anything!

Wooden nails aren’t new – our house was over 200 years old (New England) and the barn was put together with wooden pegs.

My 6th grade science teacher had hissing cockroaches as our classroom pets. We had a funeral for the one that died.
