Last week while the HH stood in line for an hour to order a lobster roll from Red’s Eats, in Wiscasset, Maine {population 3,800} I walked up the street to check out Treats bake shop. For those of you who are maybe new around here, I kinda have a sweet tooth and since early 2017 I’ve been on a mission to find 52 hometown bakeries that make their offerings from scratch {no giant 5 gallon tubs of preservative filled goo please!}.
Sure you can buy a pie or a loaf of bread at the grocery store, but it’s just not the same. Not even close. Not in taste, ingredients used, or that whole I’m happy to be spending my dollars here and to support a local business feeling you get when you shop small.
If you ask me, Treats had ABSOLUTELY EVERYTHING a small, hometown bakeshop should have:
- A picture window to display to display baked goods
- Shelves, not too many, but enough to house a few fancy specialty products, whimsical treats, and handcrafted items from artisans from the area.
- Candy jars filled with goodness by the pound.
- A long community table for casual seating .
- A community bulletin board with local events pin up.
- Simple packaging for take away containers {as a consumer, unless I’m giving something as a gift, I would have rather my food purchase cost $0.75 less than to toss a printed box with stickers in the trash}.
- Kind waitstaff.
- Clean, bright, calm and welcoming atmosphere.
- Simple, delicious, made from scratch offerings.
Seriously, the personal sized berry pie with crumb topping? It was just what I was looking for. Not only did it taste like a real pie should, but I knew it was crafted by someone who cared.
Happiness, you can feel it, even in baked goods.

It is fun to see the locations that I have known my whole life through someone else’s eyes. I’m sure that you will uncover some gems that I never even knew about!

Fun to see Duck eggs being sold. Son #2 raises both ducks and chicken on his farmlett. Be careful how you eat duck eggs. Many people get stomach issues if they eat say scrambled duck eggs. Baking with them however is fine. Baked goods made with duck eggs just taste richer and better with this one ingredient change.

When my hens stopped laying I tried duck eggs that I bought at the farmer’s market to eat for breakfast. They hurt my stomach like no other! I tried fried and scrambled. So strange.

Duck eggs are higher in protein, maybe that’s why they irritate some people’s stomachs? They’re also easier to overcook for that reason. The French really like to use them for baking. I began using mine to make bread and it’s so nice and fluffy. I miss the eggs but not the mess from the ducks. It was also a lot of fun to listen to them quacking happily all day long.

Here are my favorite Maine bakeries (all good, but in ascending order):
Holy Cannoli, Waterville
Holy Donut, Portland
B&T Baked Goods – Whitefield, ME – at lots of farmers markets in the Augusta area.
Slates Bakery, Hallowell
Little Bigs, South Portland – hand pies and croissants.
Frosty’s Donuts, various locations – but if you visit the A1 Diner in Gardiner, you can go to the one around the corner. Just check hours – and construction schedules- the A1 will be closing for a time this summer, as the DOT replaces the bridge. The A1 is no bakery slacker, either, with amazing biscuits, muffins, and desserts.
The Bakers Bench, Westbrook. The best cream horns you’ve ever had, plus truly excellent croissants in many flavors.
The Italian Bakery, Lewiston. My husband’s cousins run this one, and they have everything. Best cannoli in the state. Cookies, donuts, tiramisu, cake, pies, turnovers, creme horns, breads, biscuits, etc.etc. Saturday is baked bean day – get fresh baked beans, hot dogs, and biscuits for Saturday supper. Yes, baked beans are easy to make, but if you didn’t plan ahead, there are options. They also have great sandwiches and pizza.
