Well the good news is the Habitat ReStore store came and picked our old appliances. And the even better news is that we are saving money on groceries lately because all of our meals seem to be coming out of the freezer.
This past week we spent a whopping $4.54 on a gallon of milk. That’s it! Which means our current grocery store purchases for 2023 are at $1104.15.
I told the HH we should really try and see if we could make it until the end of the year with only spending $100 a month {average} on groceries. I know I could totally do it.
But he’s not so sure.
Here are the meals we ate last week:
The HH’s chicken soup.
Copy Cat Panera black bean soup.
Steak and potato soup {using some beef tips and potatoes the HH bought at Costco last month}.
Breaded chicken, canned corn and frozen broccoli.
Pickety bits. I think I could seriously live off of pickety bits. Couldn’t you?
Smoothies!
I had totally forgotten about smoothies. Now the blender is on the counter indefinitely as we work our way through all the bags of berries in our freezer. We have a ton of cherries too… But I’m not so sure those would be good in a smoothie.
And last but not least… a roasted chicken! It was fantastic. I think I’ll make chicken curry tonight with the leftovers. 🙂
Saving money on groceries by eating down the freezer… I’m on it!
So how did YOU do last week? Did you make anything exciting? Find any good deals?
Have a good one,
~ Mavis

Cherries are great in smoothies! Especially with a touch of cocoa powder & a banana. We love eating a few partially thawed cherries as dessert at night, by themselves. So tasty!!

Cherries are good in smoothies. Mine are usually banana blueberry and pineapple. I add collagen powder.
It’s been brutally hot here this summer so we have been eating thinks hubby can grill.

I love smoothies! I use bananas, frozen fruit (I buy a large bag of frozen fruit from Costco), water and a squirt of flavoring (the water enhancer type stuff). I use the flavoring & water instead of juice. Cherries would be great in a smoothie . . . just take the pits out first . . . ha ha ha.
It’s been kind of hot here, so I made a large Tri-Color Pasta Salad. Nothing like a cold salad on a hot day. I made a large batch so that it will last me a few days.
The only real deal I got last week was for Color Grabber. Publix had them on BOGO and I had $1.00 coupons. The regular price was $5.09 each (BOGO made it 5.09 for the 2 boxes) minus two $1.00 coupons – making each box $1.55. I was able to get 4 boxes. (The coupons were on the boxes that I had previously purchased months ago – they had no expiration date. Publix allows coupons to be used even on the free items). I use these all the time, so it was a win for me!

Cherries are my favorite thing to put in smoothies!

I’m not so much of a cherry or smoothie person, but I could see turning them into pie filling and making turnovers or mini pies.
We’re still eating the freezers down! My kitchen freezer is near empty, and my chest freezer is halfway there. This week it will be sausage with perogies, baked cod with corn, salmon with acorn squash (from the garden), tamale pie and salad (from the garden), burgers and fries, and of course FFY (fend for yourself/leftover) nights.
Looking forward to moving and restocking with meals! Trying to get the garden harvested before we have to move, my dehydrator is going all day long!

It seems like one of the most simple ways to save money is to eat what’s already in your fridge and pantry. Good for you. Sometimes simple makes sense.

I love frozen cherries. I like to bake cherry clafoutis from them or eat them with mixed berries and a touch of vanilla in a smoothie. I also like a bourbon cherry compote with a side of vanilla bean ice cream. I do know from my hubby that some people are sensitive to cherries and can get some intestinal discomfort and issues, just a warning in case you are planning on going through a lot of cherries.

I’ve got some food items in the freezer that I would love to eat. It’s so stinking hot/humid, I can’t bring myself to turn on the oven or stove top. So it’s alot of salads for me lately. Smoothies are a good option as well. I tend to put tart cherries in mine, it’s supposed to be good for stiff joints. Hope you all have a terrific week!

Love the white dishes with the blue rim! Who makes them?
Mavis Butterfield says
They are Falcon Enamelware. 🙂

Thank you! Checking out their website right now–that bake set is calling my name!

Hi Mavis, I finally made your Ritz cracker chicken. My husband raved about it for days and asked me to only chicken that way. Yes, I could totally live on pickety bits. Although hubby would require a steak or pork chop plunked in the middle of his plate.

The high Temps in our part of the Pacific Northwest means the local farm stores put lots of produce on sale. I picked up 2 boxes of peaches for the price of one. Then went home and made peach milkshakes! I’ll can most of them later in the week when, hopefully, it cools down.

Frozen cherries my favorite in smoothies.
Donna says
We also like smoothies and use cherries in them along with blueberries, strawberries, and bananas. We add protein powder, collagen powder, dark cocoa, and peanut butter powder. Add a little milk and some ice. We call it breakfast.
Annette says
That roast chicken looks amazing. Can you share your recipe please?
