Shelly From Iowa Sends in Pictures of Her Container Garden

A big THANK YOU to everyone who has sent in their photographs and stories. I hope by sharing other peoples pictures and stories here on One Hundred Dollars a Month we can all have a rock star garden this summer. Keep them coming!

Hi Mavis,

I am such a huge fan! My family and I live in Iowa and I am always looking for ways to save money for my family and be efficient and resourceful. I’ve attached some pics of my container garden. We moved last year from a small house and 6 acres of land, so I used to have a big garden. We moved to a bigger house and much smaller yard. So, we got creative and planted our new garden in containers that we built. We took 55 gallon drums, drilled 10-12 one inch drainage holes, laid the bottom with burlap, so the water would drain, but not the dirt. It’s exciting to “still play in the dirt” and grow food for my family. We have potatoes, tomatoes, sugar-snap peas, green beans, kohl rabbi, lettuce, cucumbers, onions, and peppers. Its amazing what you can put into these containers!

I’ve also included some pics of some flowers that I planted. I found wire baskets at a garage sale, used the moss that was growing on the north side of my house to line the inside of the basket and filled with dirt and planted flowers. I’ve gotten a lot of compliments and it was fun to do!
