It was another great week in the shopping your freezer and pantry department. As I mentioned last week, instead of going to the grocery store for milk, I’ve been using up some old cans of expired evaporated milk for my twice daily cup of tea.
I am down to one can though, so I suspect we’ll have to pop by the store for a gallon of milk by the end of the week.
But hey, waste not want not, right?
On Monday we had the leftover beef with horseradish cream and then the next night I pulled a container of 8 can chicken taco soup from the freezer and served that for linner.
Linner is what we do around here these days… A light breakfast, a mid-day meal and something small in the evenings is sooo much better than loading up on 3 big meals. Especially as we’re getting older, we just don’t eat as much.
Copycat Panera tomato soup and grilled cheese? Yes please!
The HH had breaded chicken from the freezer section one afternoon and I ate a slice of chocolate cake. 🙂
Another night I pulled a container of lasagna and some peas from the freezer and warmed them up in the AGA after baking a batch of cookies. That AGA residual heat. You just can’t beat it!
More things we ate last week:
Weenies with roasted turnips {from the garden} and carrots.
Pickety bits.
There were also a lot of smoothies. So far I think the blueberry peach combo is my favorite.
And last but not least, Sunday was our 29th wedding anniversary {29 YEARS!!!} and we celebrated by going out for breakfast at Solo Pane e Pasticceria in Bath, Maine.
I LOVE that place!
It was a good week, but there is still so much more to do in regards to cleaning out the freezer! So onward we go. Next week I am going to try and change things up a bit. Maybe try some new combinations. Wish me luck!
Have a good one,
~Mavis

Hey Mavis – Wish I’d seen this a couple weeks ago, as I was just in Bath! However, when I made a run into town there to Shaw’s and Rocky’s Hardware, I was driving our big pick-up truck, which is a PITA to parallel park anywhere on those Bath streets. I looked at the bakery website and I didn’t see a business address (!) – where is it?? P.S. One of these days I’m going to run into you somewhere in Maine and say hi!

29 Centre Street. 🙂 I love downtowon Bath!

I know, right? HH if you are reading this WHERE IS MY CORN!?

I am using up things in the freezer as well. I pulled out a package of sweet Italian sausage and made spaghetti & sausage. The next day, I pulled out one of the sub type rolls from the freezer and made a sausage sub. I still have spaghetti and sausage left over and I will be eating that for the next couple of days. Cook once – eat all week works for me! We went out to dinner for a friend’s birthday this past Saturday. I took the leftovers from our meals and made lunch the next day. I don’t like to waste food either.
I agree about eating “linner”. If I eat dinner later in the day (after 6:00), I gain weight. But when I eat the large meal of the day around 2:30-3:00, I don’t gain weight and have even lost weight (just a few ounces here and there, but I’ll take it!). Sometimes I will eat a small snack later in the evening but that’s it.
This week should be interesting. We are in the path of Tropical Storm Idalia (which is supposed to strengthen to a category 2 hurricane when it hits on Wednesday). We need to “batten down the hatches” in the chicken coop area and hope that the storm doesn’t wipe out my garden. We are very blessed in that our soil drains very quickly – sometimes it drains too quickly. I am not so much concerned for the rain, but for the wind – the plants are young and may not be able to withstand it. In any event, we are well stocked on food so we won’t starve if we are stuck at home.

Hubby and I have taken to eating linner frequently. I find it’s so much better because we just don’t eat as much now that we’re senior citizens. Added upside is we have lost a few pounds as well…..and there’s fewer dishes to clean.

Happy Anniversary Mavis! Mine is today. A whole lot of years. 52!
There’s a new name for your pickety bits meal. It’s called girl dinner. It’s a thing now. Maybe you started something.

Mavis your amazing cleaning out freezers and not spending grocery money. It’s a hard challenge to do it on 100 a month or 1,200 a year total but that would be a huge accomplishment !Your so close ,good luck and keep H H out of Cosco this year ! Lol
Ellen in Clackamas says
How can you have an anniversary celebration without corn? Haha. Here’s to many more happy years.
SueD says
So many people joining the linner wagon! The OH and I have been doing this on and off for about 25 years now. Started when he was able to work from home, the ‘off’ times were when he had to go in to work. Last 10 years, always. So much better for us to eat this way, but difficult for many people with school/work schedules. Lost a bit of weight.
Happy Anniversary!

Happy Anniversary, Mavis! I like the idea of Linner too. Blueberry-peach smoothie sounds good right now!

Happy Anniversary Mavis and HH!
I think I’m going to go inventory my freezer and start a cook-down. The girls asked for pulled pork mac and cheese for school lunch this week (bring from home), but pork has not been below $3.50/lb for weeks 🙁 Except for the Picnic cut, which is a pain in the neck and a poorer bargain with the bone and fat.
Beryl Redfield says
Mavis you can freeze milk, I do it all the time. Cream also. Milk is just fine and cream whips better! Try it. I use whole milk. Beryl

Still eating down the freezer here! Only 2 days to go until we move! This week we have had Beyond Chicken Nuggets and Fries, burgers, crispy baked haddock, and tonight it is smoked sausage with sweet potatoes and butternut squash.
Have a great week

We’ve been eating in a lot which is great for the budget. I also decided we need to start eating our canned goods. I bought a lot two years ago and still can’t seem to make a dent in it. This week I opened a can of black beans and have been having that with chicken. I also opened a can of soup and made a grilled cheese for my son the other day. Two cans down.
I also made a frozen vegetable as a side for my hungry teen the other day to go with chicken. One more frozen item down.
Additionally I made my way through one of three boxes of breakfast sausage that was frozen in the freezer. I actually think I have enough food in the house for a month or two as long a we have no cravings and make the time to cook.
I’ve been buying premade cookie dough lately. Tonight I will bake a container off to keep the hungry teen at bay.
