One of my favorite things to find in the grocery store this time of year are Brussels sprouts still on their stalk heaped up high in the produce section. And if you’re a weirdo like me and have ever wondered, should I buy Brussels sprouts on the stalk, keep reading!
Last year Trader Joe’s was selling a stalk of Brussels sprouts for $3.99. This year the leafy green mini cabbages are going for $4.99 a stalk. But is that a good deal? Is there any money saving advantage to buying Brussels sprouts on their stalks? How many sprouts are on a stalk anyway?
Well, lucky for you, you don’t have to guess anymore. 🙂
While I didn’t stand there in the store and count the sprouts, I did give the stalks a quick look over and selected one loaded with plump, uniform sprouts.
And as it turned out, after picking the spouts off the stalk, I ended up with 43.85 ounces of Brussels sprouts. Roughly 2.74 pounds.
So at $4.99 for a stalk of Brussels sprouts that meant my Brussels sprouts ran $1.82 a pound.
Keep that in mind the next time you are shopping!
Fun Fact: I did a quick check online to see how much Brussels Sprouts were going for in the stores, and here’s what I found:
Hannaford $3.49 a pound
Walmart $2.98 a pound
Fred Meyer $3.59 a pound
Brussels sprouts keep better on the stalk {and it’s a way better deal!} so if you come across them being sold on the stalk in your store, and you love Brussels sprouts as much as we do, grab one!
Keep calm and save on.

OOps—you meant stalk both times, since your analysis shows $1.82 per pound

My family LOVES brussel sprouts. I’ve tried to grow them, but one of my big dogs rips them from the ground every year and chews on them. I suppose they look like a giant stick to those adorable fur babies. If they want to eat veggies, so be it. Anyway, I’ve always preferred to get them on the stalk when possible. My daughter usually roasts them as part of our Thanksgiving feast. She adds honey-roasted pistachios, craisins, and a lovely honey-lemon glaze that she makes herself. So good. 🙂

I believe the stalk itself is also edible!

The victorians, and maybe some people still do, used to make walking sticks out of the Brussel sprout stalk and some cabbage stalks here in England. Google it I have seen one they are quite beautiful! Just putting it out there as a point of interest for you gals! I love brussel sprouts but I wonder why you hated them as a child, I surely did.
