“In our leisure we reveal what kind of people we are.” ~ Ovid
I heard that quote above once and it really got me to thinking. I have many hobbies but I’d never really thought about them defining me. I loved that concept. Now when I am doing something like gardening or rug hooking, I smile when I think about what it says about me. Those hobbies are things I LOVE to do but they also show that I am more patient than I give myself credit for and that I am willing to see a project through. It’s kind of fun to look at hobbies and think about how much they can tell you about a person. How much they can tell me about YOU, my dear readers!
I’d love for you to share your hobbies with all of us! How do you spend your free time? Are you a knitting wizard? Do you whittle like a pro? Do you dabble in pottery? Can you build a coffee table like a champ? Are you a photography-taking master? Could you teach all of us a thing or two about how to fight off someone using your karate skills? What do you do in your leisure? Could be an amazing hobby, could be a simple hobby, could be a super weird hobby! Like my mother’s hobby for instance:
She loves collecting “complimentary” items to the point I would actually say it’s a full-on hobby for her! {Like maybe she needs an intervention?} She loves to collect items on her daily walks, while dining at a restaurant, pretty much anywhere she can find something for free. Heck, she even has a few face masks from the Dr.’s office. Collecting is her hobby, and now I want to know YOUR hobby! And I’ll even pay you for that info! You share, you get a $20 Amazon gift card if your hobby is posted.
My friend Zoë, she never stops sewing.
You’re probably wondering what the catch is, right? Well, there are a few requirements:
- Your hobby has to be submitted as a well written post. A one sentence “I make homemade kites” will not do. Now, 4-5 paragraphs about how you got into kite making, how long you’ve been doing it and the different types of kites you make WILL DO. That’s what I’m looking for! How long have you been doing it? Do you make money off of it or is it just for fun? Can you teach me how to do it?
- Be sure to include a little information about yourself, like your hobby’s backstory and how you got into it. Also, please include your first name and what state or country you are from.
- Your submission MUST have 5 HIGH QUALITY photos attached. You do not have to be a professional photographer, but your photos do need to be clear and well lit or I won’t be able to use them.
- All photos must be original, and they must have been taken by YOU. All photos you submit may be used on One Hundred Dollars A Month once submitted.
- Sadly, I might not be able to use every submission if I am overwhelmed by responses. A $20 Amazon gift card will only be awarded if the submission is published.
- If you have a blog and would like me to link back to it, please let me know, I’d be happy too.
- Although you must submit at least 5 pictures per submission, you can always include more. The more the merrier just in case I do not select them all.
- One submission per person.
- Send submissions via email to onehundreddollarsamonth @ gmail.com {remove the spaces} and be sure and put Show Me Your Hobby in the subject line.
I can’t wait to see all of your fascinating hobbies! Might just encourage me to take up a few new ones. Now get those cameras all warmed up and get to sharing!
Hobby on,
~Mavis

I finally got my sewing machine up and running again and my first project was a dog bandanna! I haven’t sewed in years so a simple project was just what I needed; now I need something else to do! I look forward to seeing everyone’s posts throughout the year!

If you have girls, try making scrunchies. Simple easy and saves money over the ones they sell for high prices in the stores. That was my first project to get the feel of my new machine. So far, so good!

I don’t have any kids yet but that’s a great idea!

Cloth napkins! Easy, super useful and a great use for all the scrap material that ends up after big projects!
Carrie says
Diana, I love this idea! I actually have been wanting to buy cloth napkins for a few years but I always gaff at the price tag. I don’t have any scrap material right now but I think I’ll find something at the fabric store. Thanks!
tia in boise says
Don’t go buy fabric at the fabric store! I make cloth napkins for presents and use curtains (usually) from the thrift store. (I wash them first.) $3-5 for $15 worth of material!

What a fun challenge. Can’t wait to see everyone’s hobbies. And just to play along without actually entering the competition, my hobby sort of found me. I decided to take a tap class at a dance studio 4 years ago, and when I got there I noticed adults finishing up a ballet class and I thought “hey maybe I can do that too”. Anyway — fast forward 4 years and I now take 7 different dance classes a week (on top of my full time job) ranging from ballet to jazz/funk to tap and I LOVE it. My hobby became my passion. And to show it’s never too late to start a hobby, I took that first dance class at the age of 40. Also, along the way I tried painting classes and drawing classes and organic gardening. But nothing moved me like dance. 🙂

My favorite hobby is making music – as a guitarist and a singer. It will be fun to hear everyone’s hobbies. There are so many different passions people have, some I’m sure some most people have never heard of or considered. I wonder how many people will discover a new passion from reading the comments here?

My hobby is genealogy. I am currently on the search for one of the “Indians” at the Boston Tea Party, he would have been 13 then. He enlisted in the Army in his father’s company in the 7th Connecticut Line and survived many of the worst battles not to mention winter in Valley Forge. And he kept a diary during the time he was in the army, am now trying to get copies of his entries.

Hi Mavis,
I’m 73 years old, and believe it or not, I’ve only ever had one hobby, reading; and I didn’t get started on that until I was 22 and had two kids, one of whom was barely over 2 years old. I was going a little stark staring at times, and one day my SIL tossed me a book and told me that reading was a great escape. I’ve been reading ever since. My beloved late husband loved to read also, and we have been on some great vicarious adventures Together. We’ve traveled all over the world together, which we otherwise couldn’t have done, because of my terrible fear of flying. We’ve fought in the great wars of the ages: the battle of Culloden, the battles of the Polish when the country was divided up by Russia & Prussia, the great war, and WWII. We’ve been nurses, doctors, patients, Knights, warriors, pilots, passengers, patriots, traitors, government agents, spies. We’ve been lost in the woods, attacked by a bear, nearly drowned when we were swept away by the current of the freezing waters of the river Vistula. We learned what it is to be blind, or deaf, or both, to have lost a limb, or a child, or all our possessions. So you see, even though I’ve ever only had one hobby, it has been a wonderfully exciting and fulfilling one. It’s taken me through motherhood, divorce, being a single parent of 3 and hard times, finding my one true love in life, and then losing him 36 years later. It’s been a wonderful hobby. Still is. Tonite, I’m returning to my home in Poland to continue fighting for the cause.

Margie: THANK YOU SO MUCH for the eloquent description of your hobby of reading! (I reread it several times!) You are a gifted writer. Thanks again!

Beautiful!
I guess that just shows it is never too late to be a reader. I believe books should be shared. Such a wonderful example for any age. My hubby is the avid reader and I have always admired that about him. I hope my kids see his example and love books into their adult years too.

Margie, Thank you for the inspiring comment about reading. I hope you don’t mind but after removing your name etc. I shared your comment with my book club. They loved it. Margie I suspect you are not just a reader but a writer as well. Anna

Reading has been a life-long joy in my life too Margie ! A good book, or magazine just makes me so happy ! In summer I keep a wicker basket of magazines collected at yd. sales and thrift stores, near my comfy zero gravity lawn chair, on my shady big old back porch that over-looks my extensive gardens. Reading there, or by my fireplace in winter is one of the most enjoyable, and yet frugal things I can do. I love my computer too, but it will never really replace my books and magazines. I grew up as an only child in the country, so nature and books were my constant friends and companions, and now that I am a senior, they still are ! Thank you for sharing your interesting story !

My hobby builds on Mrs. Hudgins – not alone am I an avid reader , I’m also an committed bibliophile, with a collection of more than 900 books – primarily history, philosophy, as well as cookbooks and various crafts. The oldest book in my collection was published around 1860 on the subject of frugality, and contains notes from a Georgian father to his son on the subject, purchased at a used book store in Atlanta. Whenever I travel to a new city, I make it a point of trying to find a used book store to see what gems they may hold – the ones with notes written in the margins, etc., hold enormous appeal – a real glimpse into the lives of those who went before …
