You know that old saying… House guests and fish start to smell after three days?
Well the HH has been home sick now for the 4th day in a row. Stuffy head, fever, the chills, exhaustion, pounding headache, watery eyes, I could go on… but I’ll stop. Anywho, I made him a breakfast tray this morning.
A fried egg and cheese stuffed croissant and a glass of orange juice.
When I went back 20 minutes later to collect his tray, I asked him what was wrong with his breakfast.
“I don’t like fried eggs with soft yolks.” He said.
Ahhh… After 23 years he finally speaks up.
Moral of the story: If you don’t like something your spouse makes… SPEAK UP right away. 😉

P.S. What has your spouse been making your all these years that you dislike?

Oh Mavis! I am laughing so hard I can hardly type! It took him being sick and cranky to finally come out with it. It’s enough to make a girl hang up her spatula!

Lol! I guess better late than never?
I just found out that my husband doesn’t the ranch dressing I make. We’ve been married 11 years. Stinker! I told him to tell me right away next time!!
I hope your HH feels better soon! Poor guy’s been sick for a long time for those kinds of symptoms!! He should just be coughing and hacking in a disgusting manner by now.

A very similar story here- after 22 years of marriage, I found out last week that my husband likes his bacon crispy, not chewy. He always makes it chewy (I really love crispy bacon) so I usually make most of the batch chewy too. When I caught him sneaking some of the crispy bacon, I was surprised. He said, “I always make it chewy for you because you like it that way. I like it crispy.” I said, “Me too!” We both were shocked and then laughed. Wonder what else we’ve been doing wrong…

As a kid, I never understood the love of bacon. To me, it was a floppy, greasy slice of pork. Then I moved out of my parents’ home and started cooking it a few minutes longer. Mmmmmmm. To this day my dad would fight me to the death that it tastes better chewy, umm, NO!
My husband and I have been married 7 years. Ours are that I don’t like his soy sauce pork loin (holy salt) and his that he just revealed is that he can’t stand corn in ‘red things’.
Although, Mavis, since your HH is sick, I will say that with having 3 kids 5 and under, I’d rather they all get sick than have to deal with a sick hubby. Men. Are. Wussies. Unless your hubby is reading, in which case I believe he is quite handsome and strong :p

Well, he hasn’t spoken up in 23 years, one more day won’t kill him. LOL

My hubby tells me ….. the list goes on and on and on. I miss mushrooms, pancakes, corn, creamed anything, avocado, french toast, casseroles, sauerkraut [ha… I have a crock going right now… all for MEEEE], and pastries with cream cheese. I’ve probably forgotten some because I’ve lived without it so long I just don’t think about it. I get my fix of taboo stuff when we go out to eat.

My husband hates runny eggs also. I have to “block” his view from my runny eggs when he is across the table. He has let me know about some things he does not like, but usually I can tell by if I hear” that was good ” or nothing at all. On the other hand all the pictures you have posted of what you cook for your family looks yummy. You would hear no complaints from me.

When the hubby and I were first married I would make something and could tell he didn’t like it but wouldn’t say anything. I told him you better tell me because I will be so mad if I find out in 20 years that I have been making something you do not like. Married 26 years now and he still feels bad when he tells me he didn’t like something. I still tell him at least I know not to fix it again. Silly men. It hurts my feelings more if you don’t tell me or LIE about it.

I don’t like most pork products such as pork roast, pork chops or ham. My husband will often bring home pork chops. We’ve been married 20 years. I’ve never said, mmmm, good pork chops/roast/ham. I’ve been pretty clear on my dislike of these things. I just went vegan. Maybe he’ll get the message.

Well, this post made my day, that’s for sure!

I hate when my husband says, “I love that turkey pot pie, ” “let’s have turkey pot pie,” “make that turkey pot pie again,” so when I make 4 turkey pot pies for the freezer, then he says, “I don’t like that turkey pot pie any more.” Suck it up, big boy, cuz you’re gonna eat it one way or the other!

If my husband had his way, every meal would be a slab of whatever meat is available (steak, pork chop, burger, chicken breast, etc), potatoes (mashed is preferred but any potato is fine as long as it only has butter and/or salt on it) and a vegetable (not picky about this). Unfortunately, what he can’t STAND, is mixing them all together into any type of casserole or stew type meal. I’m just the opposite. We end up compromising. He gets his boring plateful several times each week and I throw it all together in the crockpot for the other nights. Guess it’s why we’ve been together for so long without me braining him with the fry pan. Hope your hubby feels better…………..:)

cucumbers!! I’m joking
For years I never bought them because I didn’t think he liked them. Um…that must have been an ex boyfriend who didn’t like them!

Dried oregano.
We used to buy these DIY pizza mixes and they always came with these little packages of dried oregano. Ugh, it made the pizza stink and taste terrible. It took me two years to tell DH that I didn’t like it.
The worst part? HE DIDN’T BELIEVE ME! He still made pizza with it. When I quit eating his pizza he finally figured out that I was telling the truth.

Shrimp Scampi!!! Took about 15 years, when he said, “I don’t like warm shrimp”!!!! Couldn’t believe it, I made it QUITE OFTEN, it’s one of my favorites! So, now when I make a new recipe I ask, do you like it? Is it a once a week? Once a month? Once a year recipe??!! Working on 26 years, couldn’t of been all that bad!
Karen says
Mine is not shy about telling me what he doesn’t like, which happens OFTEN. We have very different tastes in food and it’s really quite inconvenient. Probably 25% of the time when I make a new recipe (chosen because I think he will actually like it) he ends up eating cereal for dinner instead. Oh well. More leftovers for me!

I don’t have a story about my hubby but I do have to tattle on myself. I cook every meal he eats so when he gets to grill for me, he gets excited. He was really excited about a smoker we saw at Costco so I pinched pennies and bought it for him. The first time he grilled something on it, I had to admit that I hate smoked meats, even more when I’m pregnant. He was like “Umm, you couldn’t have said anything before we bought a smoker?!?” Lol

I haven’t been shy about telling my husband of nearly 24 years that I prefer crispy bacon – he likes it very flabby (barely cooked, as far as I’m concerned!). If he doesn’t make any that’s crispy enough I will microwave it for another minute or two in parchment paper.
He, on the other hand, has been recently caught in a culinary silence. I always make the fried eggs and omelets (he’ll do scrambled, but not the others). A few weeks ago I was telling him about a conversation I had with my Canadian brother-in-law about fried eggs. We had both read an article about making perfect eggs in an English newspaper (my husband and his sister are both English), and BIL and I were laughing about how different the instructions in the article were so different from how we made our “perfect” fried eggs. Apparently, in England the “perfect” one have brown crispy edges; Canadian BIL and I think getting any of the whites browned is a sign of an *imperfect* fried egg!
So we both checked with our respective spouses, and lo and behold, they both preferred crispy brown edges. Neither of them had mentioned that to us in 23-24 years of marriage! They didn’t want to bother with making the eggs, so they never complained, but they definitely prefer the crispy edges version… I feel like my entire married life was a lie, LOL.

My husband, who is usually an adventurous eater, waited twenty years to tell me he hates curry in particular and Indian food in general. I think he was frightened by a samosa as a child. I have always known he hates raw tomatoes. He passed that on to our daughter. I still plant four tomato plants, and my daughter’s boyfriend and I have a tomato feast for weeks, before it all ends up as salsa.

My husband kills me with this one- there are some things I like and I know he doesn’t. So I get it or make “for me.” And he still eats it! My favorite orange juice, tuna casserole, etc. And he will eat all of it!

I will chime in with this comment as it pertains to the topic. I find it difficult to find a happy medium with all parties on how Bacon should be cooked. I have found the sale bacon brands to always be thin and best cooked crisp. The thicker bacon you find can be cooked both soft and crisp. The thing I have found to be the best at attaining whatever texture is desirable is using Bacon Grease initially to get consistency.
Bottom Line to me is from the hundreds of people I have cooked Bacon for in my life, there has been way more soft bacon leftover than there has crisp.
On the subject of runny eggs I have another method I employ as well.
I heat the pan up and add the eggs. Once the egg whites start to turn I scramble the a bit without affecting the yolks. Once the whites are to the consistency I desire I break all of the yolks in a separate part of the pan. I can then produce an egg in a scrambled fashion for people who love fried eggs in any consistency.
I just refuse to beat eggs up in a bowl!
