The Girl Who Thinks She’s a Bird made this the other night. Whoever thought to do this is freakin awesome. Where was this idea when I was growing up or before I had kids? There were so many times when this cake would have really come in handy. Even now, it will keep me from inhaling an entire chocolate cake.
Seriously though, tell me this isn’t the perfect college kid recipe! You don’t need large quantities of ingredients and every college kid has a microwave, right? I suspect this won’t be the last time The Girl makes this.
Ingredients
3 tablespoons water
2 tablespoons olive oil
A pinch of salt
2 tablespoons cocoa powder
1/4 cup sugar
1/4 cup flour
Powdered sugar to dust on top
Directions
In a coffee mug or custard dish, mix all dry ingredients together. Then add wet ingredients and stir until combined. Microwave on high for 1 min 45 seconds, sprinkle with powdered sugar and BAM. Dessert is served!

Genius! I bought some of the 8 ounce wide mouth canning jars for making just this kind of thing. Trying to amass a bunch of recipes and this one will be the first I try.

Let us know how it goes!

I had many wide mouth canning jars so I made it in one and Viola’ it was delicious…I may spray the inside of the jar with cooking spray next time to make it easier to remove…
Mavis says
I just eat it right from the jar! But spray might make cleaning it easier!!

Does anyone know how long to bake in oven? Yep I do not have a microwave.
Mavis says
I’m not sure it would bake that well in an oven, but I’d try baking it for about 10 minutes and checking it and then go from there.
Nicole says
This totally reminds me of something you’d make in an Easy Bake Oven. 🙂
Mavis says
Isn’t it so little and cute?! Plus there’s no crazy burn risks for kids!!
Stacey says
Oh, this is definitely going on my “to try” list! I hardly ever bake anymore because it’s just me and my husband. This’ll be perfect for when we want dessert.
Mavis says
That’s why The Girl is so excited about it for college!!

I make this all the time, and it’s even better when you mix stuff in, like chocolate chips, peanut butter, nuts, almost anything! Yummy!
Mavis says
My mind is spinning with possibilities!
Dana says
I made it last night and it was amazingly yummy……and to boot we added one scoop of vanilla ice cream and this made it rock star quality good!
Mavis says
It’s perfect with ice cream!
Diana says
Had to try it last night. It worked! It was more of a brownie than a cake (but who’s complaining?) I would cut the recipe in half in the future. That would fit my coffee cups better, and cut the calories, but still give plenty of cake to eat in one sitting.
Thanks for the recipe, Mavis and ‘Girl Who…’
Mavis says
I’m so glad you liked it!

Tried this today. Young men were swooning. (So was I.) This is the perfect Valentine’s dessert. Some whipped cream, sliced strawberries and a slight drizzle of chocolate.
Mavis says
So glad you liked it. And strawberries are totally a perfect addition!

Could this be made with stevia?
Mavis says
I suppose it could, but it might change the consistency a bit.

Thank you! My son is taking a microwave cooking project in 4-H this year–he will be so excited to have a new recipe that he can make BY HIMSELF!
