If there is one thing I LOVE about vegetable gardens…. is that they come in all different shapes and sizes. And Mrs. HB’s garden is a perfect example of that.
When the HB’s moved to their property 10 years ago Mrs. HB’s in-laws gifted their kids a wooden playset. Over the years they planted fruit trees, raspberry canes and strawberry plants around their unfenced property and the never ending stream of deer wandering through the neighborhood LOVED munching the plants down to nubs just as the trees and plants began to flower. 😉
So last summer I helped her start a small garden off to the side of the play set. Nothing big. Just a 6′ by x 15′ plot to get her kids interested in growing a few vegetables.
Last summer, the garden did just so-so.
But this year, with the addition of some homegrown fertilizer from the chickens…. her garden is growing like mad, and to tell you the truth I’m a little jealous.
In just that tiny space, she has tomatoes, tomatillos, peppers, onions, leeks, chives, basil, rosemary, cabbage, celery, carrots, cucumbers, peas, chard, lettuce, artichokes, strawberries, raspberries, and brussels sprouts. It’s crazy.
And so much fun to look at.
She literally went to the garden center, bought a few packets of seeds, a few plant starts and crammed everything into the tight space and hoped for the best.
And you know what? Her garden is rockin’ this year. Seriously rockin’
So for all you peeps out there who say you don’t have enough space to have a garden, or that you have a black thumb YOU CAN DO IT.
Seriously. You can do it. Dig up a patch of your grass, find somewhere to get free fertilizer {chickens and horse manure work great} turn your soil and get planting.
It’s easier than you think.

I envy those who can Garden!! I have the room but am allergic to pretty much everything… I can’t even *eat* raw fruits or veggies. I’m not allowed to walk barefoot through the grass either.. 🙁 I think it’s fabulous though and hope that in my next life I’m a gardener!! 🙂

That’s really inspiring! Thanks for sharing, because I (once again) managed not to get things in place for a garden, but it’s (again) inspiring to know it can start small and get better. Plus, all the things Mrs. Hillbilly is growing are things I want to grow!
