Market Basket $41.02
After last week’s fantastic salad kits from Costco, the HH picked up a few from Market Basket to try out. Sadly we learned that some salad kits are better than others.
Basically, both kits he bought were predominantly filled with cabbage and well, if I wanted a cabbage salad, I would have made cole slaw. So we won’t be getting those again.
Costco is on the way to an errand I need to run this week though so if I have time, I’ll pop in there are load up on more of those delicious Mediterranean salad kits.
Weenies were another staple this week. Weenies and cabbage salad. Mmm Mmm what a winning combination. 😉 The HH decided to give the Market Basket brand of weenies a try and well, those we not a big hit either.
We also enjoyed some of Trader Joe’s hatch chili mac and cheese, but I had to heat it up in the oven as we don’t have a microwave so it wasn’t as creamy as it normally is.
The house came with an old microwave but it took up too much room on the kitchen counter so we put it on the curb {it was gone in less than an hour!}.
Living without a microwave is going to take some time to get used to, but you know what? The place looks less cluttered without one and you know me, I can’t stand clutter.
Pickety bits rule! I could live off of them. 😉
Trader Joe’s Kung Pao chicken. Now there’s another meal I could eat everyday.
And lastly, ice cream. We had ice cream for dinner twice last week {this is New England after all and that’s what people do here} and it was wonderful. It’s been so warm lately {hovering around the 80 degree mark} that I haven’t felt like trying any new recipes.
It’s hard to believe that fall is only about 9 weeks away!! There is still so much to see and do and GET DONE before it’s time to batten down the hatches again.
But you know what? I think this winter is going to be a little different. More cozy. More productive. Calm.
At least that’s what I’m telling myself anyway. Because by then, everything will be unpacked and in its place and I’ll finally be able to relax a bit.
Seasons. It seems like we’re always looking forward to the next one, doesn’t it?
Monday. Let’s do this!

I don’t like the clutter of a microwave either. I cleared out a shelf in the pantry for it. I gave up storage space but still have my microwave – behind a closed door!!!

In my experience, all the salad mixes labeled “chopped” tend to be like that. They aren’t bad, but they are basically slaws even when they have other add-ons.

Taylor Farms chopped salads are great. The kale one is absolutely the best.

We have a heavy focus on protein in my household with my diet. No one really complains. In fact my teenager has such hollowed legs, I buy food and it’s just about gone the next day. I know this is a phase. A very expensive phase. Attempting to coupon or find deals again like I was ten years ago. Ha….if only the deals were as good as they were ten years ago!!

I don’t have a Costco membership but other chopped salad brands I have bought always seem to be all cabbage. I like some of the Aldi chopped salad kits ok but still too much cabbage.

Our microwave is primarily the plate heater. We had a tiny one that one of our kids ditched after college and it did the job just fine and took up very little space.
I buy the 6 pack of romaine at Sam’s and pick up a bag of spinach at Aldi and that is our salads along with tomatoes, cucumbers and whatever else is around. I buy an occasional Asian kit when the kids will be here but overall we don’t care for the plastic packaged taste of any bagged salad. Our salads are fresher tasting and we rarely waste any greens because we eat salads every day. Between the romaine and the spinach our greens for about three weeks cost around $6.50. When I look at that the cost of kits are crazy expensive.

Dole salad kits are absolutely the worst. Very wet and musty-smelling.
I mostly do romain heads: chopped, washed, and spun-dried.
I would never give up my microwave, mostly because it is hung over my stove (with plenty of vertical clearance), provides light over the cooktop, and vents to the outside. Could NOT do without that venting!

I lived without a microwave for a year in my 20s, and it was okay (largely okay since we had an electric kettle instead for fast tea!), but not having an easy way to heat up leftovers or single servings of things was actively unpleasant on occasion (esp. semi-dry things like rice or pasta that you can’t boil but where you don’t want them to dry out further in the oven).
Sometimes you just want a small something warm, no extra dishes! (also, while stovetop popcorn also has its place, I’ll always have affection for microwave popcorn. And sweetened-condensed-milk fudge is just so easy in the microwave…)
Anyway, I’d endorse keeping half an eye out for a small microwave and tucking it away somewhere, even if it’s not in the kitchen, for when you’re sick and just want a bowl of soup without dishes, or for heating up leftovers, or for heating up rice packs for sore muscles or cold feet, or…

We heat up a lot in the toaster oven/airfryer/convection oven. I have the Pampered chef toaster oven size bar stone and it works for most every thing because it has edges.

I had a microwave die on me and didn’t replace it for months. I found other very conventional ways to heat things and didn’t miss it so much. I eventually replaced it with a small unit I found on clearance at Target.

On sunny days I enjoy heating food — whether actual cooking or just warming leftovers — using my solar oven.

Trader Joes salad kits are always a hit! Most are primarily cabbage based, but not all. For the cabbage based kits, I always add a dark leafy green (kale or spinach.) And always spruce up with whatever is in the fridge (tomatoes, carrots, etc.) There is more than enough dressing for the add-ins. If not, I spruce up the dressing with extra vinegar for vinaigrettes and milk for creamy dressings.

What is that cabbage salad with your weenie?
Sue says
.y Walmart has the Mediterranean Crunch salad kit. No membership needed!

2 years ago I renovated my kitchen and got rid of the over-the-range microwave. I had been using one since they were invented in the 70’s and decided it was a waste of energy and space. I replaced it with a range hood and the new oven has 2 sizes so I reheat leftovers in foil in the smaller oven for about 10 minutes. Also, I will heat/reheat on a frying pan covered over in foil to prevent splatters on the new gas range.

So, am I the only one who is thinking that little cottage in the background of the ice cream cone dinner, IS you new house?
