Have you started your spring clean up chores yet?
Yesterday was such a beautiful day, Miss Lucy and I spent the afternoon basking in the sunshine and tidying up the front garden beds. Oh to be outside again {and not have the wind whipping around!!}. It was awesome.
The rhubarb and chives are beginning to pop through the soil and the first of the spring bulbs are breaking though too. I LOVE this time of year. So much hope, so much to look forward to and so much TO DO!
Gardening is different every year, and I think that’s why I keep coming back to it again and again.
One exciting thing about this year is that we’ll be able to harvest 50% of the asparagus patch. Which is pretty darn exciting if you ask me!
I think Lucy is the most excited about gardening season though as she loves to lay on the warm patio bricks and tan herself.
Aerating the garden is also usually one of her favorite things too. 😉
We started a bunch of leeks from seed last spring and while they were fun to grow and looked lovely in the garden beds, I think I’ll just plant one row this year.
I’ve been so busy with other things so far this year that I haven’t sat down and mapped out my garden plans for this year yet. But one thing is for sure, I want to grow lots and lots of tomatoes {who doesn’t?} and try a few new flower varieties.
Gardening. Every year is a blank slate. And I kind of like it that way.
How about YOU? Do you have any special gardening plans for this year? Will you be trying anything new? Do tell! I need all the ideas I can get.
Keep calm and dig on,
~Mavis

We will have our first garden in our new home in NC this spring.
Hubby is also in the midst of construction of a small greenhouse for me.
Getting ready to start my indoor seedlings this week!
I’ve never been much of a gardener – but now, semi-retired, we have lots of time to play in the dirt!

We live in a townhome now since moving to coastal ME, so we plan to grow things in pots on the back patio. Our dog loves fresh carrots, so we’ll grow some of those for him. He goes nuts over them! And I’m trying to decide what else – tomatoes for sure (slicing & hopefully some golden cherry if I can find those up here), & maybe some bush cucumbers. Otherwise, we’ll plant flowers, which I’m so excited about. The patio is a decent size, but I’m not sure if we’ll get enough sun. It’ll be an experiment.
Yesterday’s weather here was beautiful but the wind whipped so hard & was frigid. Even our little dog was ready to come inside.

I was going to start cleaning up/prepping my garden this week and then it started snowing again. lol
I am planning to plant my peas & radishes over the weekend – even if it is snowing.
Mavis, do you know if I can safely transplant my strawberries at this time of year?
Lindsey says
We plant literally hundreds of leeks every year. I cannot fathom having any left at this time of the year and planting less this summer. Leeks rule!!
Rita says
What do you make with all of those leeks?
SueD says
I love leeks, and will be planting more this year. I’m trying a new-grow-to-me variety of potato, King Edward’s. And several types of tomatoes. The grandpuppy has discovered the joy of eating them, so I will need to have plenty on hand for him. If the weather cooperates, the great terracing of the back yard will finally be finished this spring, and I can plan out how I want to set the beds up. I’ll be so happy to not rely on the fabric grow pots.
Marie says
Save those leeks for yourself. They are not safe for dogs to eat.
Annette says
I’m anxious to hear about the new flower varieties.

We planted the first round of spring seeds outside yesterday. The Egyptian walking onions, parsley, and chives survived the winter.
We’re trying quite a few new things this year including artichokes, cabbage, cauliflower, arugula, spinach, bloody dock, dinosaur kale, dianthus, love-in-a-mist, borage, lovage, zucchino rampicante, chamomile, gelber englischer custard squash, spoon tomatoes, Job’s tears, salvia, nasturtium, scorzonera, cosmos, rutabaga, and kabouli black garbanzo beans.
Going to start the inside seeds for transplanting later this week.
