Quote of the Day “Let us not forget that the cultivation of the earth is the most important labor of man. When tillage begins, other arts will follow. The farmers, therefore, are the founders of civilization.” ~ Daniel Webster
Do you ever wish you could press a fast forward button on life? The poison ivy rash on my wrists is now totally swollen and a good 4 inches long {on each arm!}. It feels like I am wearing a set of those wide basketball wristbands like guys wore in the late 80’s. Plus, on top of all that, I now have about 2 inch section in the middle of my neck that has an itchy rash too. Good times.
HEY POISON IVY…. YOU STINK! And HEY HUMIDITY….. You can pack it up as well. Go home! Get out of here. GO AWAY. I think I’m going to have to drive to the store this morning and buy that $35 cream after all. 🙁
Thursday… Let’s do this!

Ivy dry is available at walmarts, rite aids, Walgreens and it’s $10 or less. Dries that rash right out. Plus it gives relief.

I just snapped up a used copy of The Gardener’s Guide for $1.94, woohoo! Thanks for the link! I have spent the whole summer buying your Kindle suggestions and it’s been great 🙂 Feel better!

Ugh, this humidity and heat is really making everything horrid (i.e., teaching in an unairconidtioned classroom full of sweaty college students — although poison ivy rash sounds a million times worse!!). Climate change is so evident with these record high temps, and I assume it will only get worse.

Please do not make the same mistake that I have in the past and not wash the tools with Tecnu after you have finished. The oils will be active for up to a year even on all of the tools that you have used. Throw away any gloves that you use or wash them in the Tecnu as well. All of my years in New England and I have suffered with poison ivy every way possible. It will also be on the rocks and area that you removed the poison ivy as well. It is a beast! The roots are difficult to remove completely as well. I never did find a cream or lotion that got rid of the rash very well, I always ended up with steroid injections that helped but still took time to clear it up. Good luck and feel better soon.

Dang , I’m convinced to not move to the east coast

The Zanfel is soooo worth it. It feels great to be able to scrub it on and then it releaves the itch and helps dry the oozing (but I still added an extra layer of cheap pink calamine lotion for the ooze, too)
Lauralli says
Learn from my past mistakes and go get the steroids. I’ve never found anything that works and have ended up with pain, misery, and scarring because I thought I could take care of it myself! Also, please wash everything from your clothes and shoes to the tools you used because that oil is likely on everything and you will get it again if you don’t.
You’ll likely not be experiencing the heat and humidity much longer (unlike me who knows it’s still around for at least another month!), so hang in there!

Tecnu is the way to go. My husband can just look at poison oak and get a bad rash. He swears by this stuff. We just got my daughter two new goats that had been clearing brush on a hillside with poison oak, and you guessed it, my husband got a rash just from helping us load them and he was trying to be very careful. The goats got a bath in Tecnu too to help gid rid of the oils on their hair.

Oh Mavis, I’m so sorry. I’ve had it on my throat and know what that feels like. I have had it so many times.
Also be careful if you use a string trimmer (weed eater) in a poison ivy area. That’s another way I get it these days, but I’m getting better at stopping everything and washing well if I feel a UFO plant piece hit me in the face.
Thanks for your blog. I learn so much from it.

Please do not be discouraged about the East Coast. You will wake up one morning and it will be lovely fall. It changes up like that. This has been the worst year for heat and humidity. I am in Delaware and we have marshes and LOTS of water around us. The mosquitos will carry you away some days. But it is nice having a long growing season and variety in weather and great beaches close by. It will all get better and you will see plenty of snow in the winter. Don’t worry about that.
Marybeth says
If you think the poison ivy is spreading, give Lucy a good bath. My sister got it 2 years ago. Kept spreading. Turns out the oils from the poison ivy was on her dog and she was petting him and spreading it on her elf. Good luck. It sure stinks.

“Buy the $35 ice cream”………..a little retail therapy always helps!!!
Gee says
Ahem. I do believe it was suggested you folks NOT MESS AROUND with the poison ivy, and just go get steroids. 🙂 We’ve been there, done that, and are trying to help you avoid some of the evils.
We are so allergic. How allergic are we? My brother is so allergic that when he walks within six feet of a plant it starts to quiver. The plant, not my brother. My brother just runs the other way.

Mavis & friends,
You will all think I am crazy but having grown up with extremely sensitive skin and having poison Ivy/oak and just about any other skin rash (including yeast infection of the skin) I got so tired of trekking it to the doctors office to be prescribed shots and ointments , none of which helped. Some even made it itch worse I did my do diligence and researched organic ways to treat this things and guess what, most of you have the best thing ever in you cabinet. I am talking about pure Organic Coconut oil. Yup you read that right. Gentle wash the area, pat dry, DO NOT SCRUB. Let air dry for a few minutes, then using a Q-tip or sterile bit of gauze Lightly coat the area with the coconut oil. Do not use cotton calls as they can leave bits of fuzzy pieces behind which can irritate the site. Do this 3 times a day and after about a week you should see it beginning to clear up. This also works well on mosquito bites, scratches and scrapes too. Give it a try and let me know what ya think.
Pam Kaufman says
The only thing that will clear up a poison ivy rash for me is Prednisone prescribed by the doctor. I get it in pill form. It takes the itch away and dries up the rash pretty quickly. You will wish you did it earlier once you see how quickly it relieves your discomfort. And lets talk about that chicken coop and run. What an amazing job your husband is doing! It’s gonna look great when it is finished!
Laura says
I am very sensitive to poison ivy, oak etc and have found a fool proof way to avoid getting that horrible rash (that on me turns to cellulitis necessitating steroids!). I put on a long sleeve shirt and gardening gloves. I then take a garbage bag and pull it up my arm and tie it around my shoulder. I pull whatever poison ivy I need to and when I’m done I pull the bag off my arm turning the bag inside out as I pull it down. That way any oils are on the inside of the bag and I never come into contact with them. If i’m pulling just a handful I’ll keep it in my hand while pulling the bag off. The weeds are then inside the bag that I throw away.
