I received a text message from The Girl Who Thinks She’s a Bird tonight {she was in the other room of course}. And all I can say is this…Teenagers are awesome!
Ya, okay, let me whip up dinner tomorrow night for 20 to 50 kids.
I mean really, if 20 kids are coming over… what’s 30 more right?

Lol! Let us know how many show up!
Mavis says
Of course I will!
Gloria says
Ramen noodles are technically “pasta”, right?
maile says
omg, love this post! VERY typical of the teenager experience, gotta love all the inclusiveness…you know 20….or 50. ha ha one day she’ll look back and love you for this. =]
Mavis says
Ha! I don’t think she’ll see the humor in it until she has teenagers… And they do this to her HA!

I was just reading http://www.damnyouautocorrect.com/ last night…I need a good laugh. Stayed up way too late though…this is funny too, though no auto correct! Have fun..you canned some pasta sauce, right?
Mavis says
Hilarious!
LaToya says
Awesome! You’ll rock it out with your free pasta and tomato sauce stash. You can always freeze the 30 leftover portions if there are some – ha.
Mavis says
Forget about freezing the pasta, I’ll just take the weekend off from cooking. LOL Pasta breakfast lunch and dinner baby!

Oh, you make me laugh!

This cracked me up! My oldest (13) has Asperger’s, so I doubt I’ll hear that until my more social child (age 10) is older, but it really, really made me laugh. This happened to my aunt, raising my first-cousin-once-removed (age 15) who put her birthday party on her facebook page and ended up with 30 teenagers plus the family friends her grandmother had already invited, LOL.
It also reminded me of the Friday I phoned my mom saying I was bringing some of the choir home from college in the morning. No, not sure how many (turned out to be 15). Not sure how long we’ll stay – probably not past Sunday breakfast (we were there until after dinner Sunday). I’m not sure I ever thanked her for that!
Then I started thinking what I would do in your circumstance. Salad greens (hopefully from the garden – pick as needed – or romaine b/c it lasts longer). Salad dressing prepped as needed. Garlic bread prepped loaf by loaf (the rest can be frozen). Pasta prepped after kids show up and headcount taken with three sauce choices: (1) Red sauce made and ready to be canned if necessary. (2) Pesto prepped and ready to go for pesto pasta alternative. (3) Easy clam sauce prepped just before service.
Ah, we all rise to our challenges. We are moms! Good luck with your 20-50 guests, LOL. I need to go phone my mom and thank her for my college weekend – my friends still talk about it!

Ok, walk in the house at 9:30pm tonight to be told “Hey Mom drum line is coming over after school tomorrow.” What’s with our teens? Well they know their Mom’s can be counted on to pull off the impossible! I wouldn’t have it any other way, would you? So let’s get cracking….have fun with your gang. I’ll think of you as I am feeding mine.
Mavis says
Get cracking lady! 🙂 I’ll be thinking of you tonight too!

I got a similar text from our elementary reminding me of the luncheon for 30 I was doing that day, only problem was it wan on my calendar for the following day. it took 45 minutes and I had pasta, fruit salad, bread and various pickled veggies at the school.
I love my pantry!
You Can Call Me Jane says
Have fun, Mavis- I know you will:-)!

Wow, that’s awesome! At least you know you can do it. I’m thinking crock pot sauces and different noodles just waiting for them. If less show up, then it’s leftover pasta for the week. Although can I say that is a HUGE jump from 20-50. I especially love that she’s in the next room texting you…

This is funny! My 15 year old daughter would Never do this because she is kind of anti-social- one friend at a time is her idea of a good time but my now 26 year old son did this all the time…we held a surprise 16th birthday party for his best friend (and 50 other kids) two weeks before my son’s 16th birthday party- where we did it all over again…I kept frozen taco meat in ziploc bags at all times along with shredded cheese and tortillas-I always had the makings of tacos because I never knew when he would show up with several friends…and ordering pizza on the fly got expensive fast! Good luck tonight!!
Mavis says
Ohhhh I like the taco idea Beth! Thanks

Frozen taco ingredients is a FABULOUS idea! I may have to incorporate this. My son is only 10 & doesn’t ask for instant parties; I’m the one always wanting to invite a bunch of people over spontaneously. Haha! You may have just made my winter more fun. 🙂

A friend just did this for the swim team at her daughter’s high school. She borrowed 2 nesco roasters (from me…I can borrow from my church) and she cooked up 12 pounds of pasta and and I forgot how much sauce. She kept all hot in the Nescos. She had everything ready for the maximum possible. I would not go with the prep as they get there plan…get it ready ahead of time. It took about 3 hours she said to get all the pasta cooked and into nesco. But she said it was great, all was self serve, she disappeared from kitchen and just let all the kids get at the food. She did one nesco of marinara (they are vegans) and one smaller kettle of alfredo for an alternative. Garlic bread, dessert and cooler full of cold beverages.
Spaghetti is very popular for the athletic groups before meets. My daughter had these the night before cross country and soccer. I never hosted one, but 20 to 50 sounds like a normal estimate, especially if having boys/girls team together, coaches etc.

Mavis, you are amazing. 🙂 I know you’ll do well!

Hi Mavis:
I am trying to find your blog on buying a volvo in Europe. I can’t seem to find it. Please help. I skimmed it over the first time and now I can’t find it. By the way, you are awesome and love how frugal and financially savvy you are! Keep doing what you do because you have inspired me in more ways than 1! I’ve worked up the nerve to get chickens and finally got the courage to ask about the produce! I’m going back today to hear from the manager. Crossing my fingers that it pulls through!
Mavis says
Here you go. We just picked up our car so stay tuned! 🙂 I’ll probably post the story on Monday or Tuesday. Here is the link to the original story. http://www.onehundreddollarsamonth.com/tag/volvo-overseas-delivery-program/

Is this the party she grew all the pumpkins for? I remember she wanted to have a giant pumpkin fest earlier when you were planting and harvesting. Somehow you posts this week have not been coming to me. I will re-sign up unless you deleted me.
Mavis says

You make me smile! 🙂 P.S. Did you get the American Girl Christmas catalog in the mail? I thought of you when I got mine.
