On Wednesday the appliance guys delivered my long awaited AGA cooker.
It was supposed to be a really happy day… after all the custom cabinets had just been installed and the countertop guys had already been out to measure and we were on track to have the kitchen remodel wrapped up by Thanksgiving… Just in time to roast a turkey in my new AGA cooker.
And then it happened.
The AGA was unloaded off the truck and into the garage for uncrating.
The cooker was packed well, with lots of padding and cardboard surrounding the cast iron beast so it was a bit of a surprise to everyone when all the packaging was removed that the cooker was damaged. 🙁
And by damaged I mean the entire top of the cast iron cooker had shifted about 3/4″ off to the right side damaging the steel panel on the side of the cooker.
Not exactly an easy fix. Or something you could just pop back into place.
In addition to that, there was also a ½” chip in the enamel coating on the right side of the cooker as well.
We all assume the crate took a hit at some point during the shipping process because there is no way it would have passed inspection or been crated up this way at the Factory in England.
When we placed our order for the cooker we were told the wait would be between 6-9 months, and that’s about what it took… 8 months from the time we ordered the AGA to the time it arrived here in the states.
And that’s how long it’s going to take to get a new one. 🙁
Yes, I know there are worse problems to have. But still, when you pay for something and have to wait that long for it only to have the thing arrive damaged… That stinks.
But who knows, maybe it was a blessing in disguise. The AGA cooker we had originally ordered {the AGA Total Control} has since been discontinued. And so now we’ll be getting the new improved version {the AGA eR7 100} which according to my husband is actually better stove.
The only thing we can do about it now is wait for the new one and hope it gets here without any damage to it. And by wait, I mean at least another 6 – 9 months.
I suppose it’s a good thing we didn’t get rid of the old oven.
Oh well. Keep Calm and Carry On I guess.
~Mavis
P.S. I found this AGA Saga Woman video on youTube… it’s pretty hilarious. Have a great weekend everyone. 😉
Kathy says
To wait that long and be so excited for the stove then have it come damaged, that stinks! I am so disappointed for you.
Mrs. C. says
Oh, Mavis, I am so sorry this happened. I hope that everything proceeds smoothly and that your wait time is more like 6 months than 8.
Brianna says
That really really sucks! I totally understand your disappointment and frustration, been there before. Maybe you should plan a non traditional Thanksgiving? You could even volunteer to help serve meals at a community kitchen that day or have a Thanksgiving potluck with some friends and neighbors.
Linda says
Oh no! I’m so sorry. As someone who just completed an extensive interior renovation/addition that took over a year, I am all too familiar with waiting months only to unbox something and find that it’s damaged beyond repair. You were indeed wise beyond your years to save your old stove (as sad as it will look in your Ava’s spot).
Linda says
Aga, not Ava!
Patty says
Ugh! What a disappointment . I hope you just put your old stove in the kitchen while you wait and start making pie!
Jennifer says
When I saw the word saga, I already knew. Well, it is what it is and you’ll get through this too. For what you’re paying, you don’t want a scratch or a dent, so while waiting is the hardest part, it’ll be worth the wait. Did they at least offer a discount or rebate of some kind, or did the carrier, since it probably happened in transit?
Mavis Butterfield says
Nope.
Patti Vanderbloemen says
I knew from your blog title that it was damaged….I am truly so sorry…
Rosemary Calhoun says
Wow, that is a huge disappointment! I don’t think I would have the patience to wait another 6 months (or more) for a replacement. You are very creative, so I am sure you will make it work.
Lynn from NC Outer Banks says
Oh Mavis, how very disappointing. I’m sorry this has happened, and that the completion of your dream kitchen will be delayed. Yes, it’s a good thing that you still have the old stove to tide you over, but you’ve waited so very long 🙁
Jennifer Jo says
Oh goodness, I’m soooo bummed out on your behalf. I know there are bigger things, but still — that’s a big deal. Right crummy, it is.
Tammy says
Oh dear! can you install a stove in the meantime? maybe something from Facebook marketplace? That’s so sad!
Ashley Bananas says
Did they ask you to return the damaged one? How crazy!!!
Mavis Butterfield says
They packed it up and put it back on the truck.
Elle says
aRGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH…
Yes, thank goodness you still have the old one!
Melissa says
You worked so hard to earn the money for it! I’m so, so sorry. It was a beauty—my absolute favorite color in all the world.
Lainey says
How heart breaking! I hope they prioritize your replacement and get it there much sooner
Pam F. says
In the future this will be a “remember when” moment but for the present, it sucks!
With the interest in Aga Stoves you’d think they’d have a dealership here in the USA or Canada.
Sue D says
They do have dealerships in the US, and I expect in Canada, too. Whether they have in-stock ranges, I don’t know, as I didn’t get that far in my inquiry several years ago.
Erin says
I’m shocked they didn’t do something to remedy this for you. What a huge disappointment! I’m so sorry!
Mavis Butterfield says
I was too. Basically it was here is your money back. If you want another one get back in line. {The end of the line.} And the new stove is $1,000 more than the other one we had ordered. 🙁
Dianne says
What??? They did not offer to expedite a new stove immediately? No, we are sorry and will give you X amount of $ towards a stove of your choice? I guess they just assume it was the carrier and want to put the blame on someone else! How disappointing for all. I would be crushed and extremely angry. What ever happened to customer service?
Erin says
WHAT?! That is horrible! Wow. Just wow.
Michelle S. says
That is just AWFUL customer service! I’m so sorry.
Leslie says
If it helps here’s another person that has an Aga Saga, part 1 and 2
Claudia says
I love this YouTube channel. Micheal and the Pethericks at Doing it Ourselves.
Leslie says
also they have an AGA cooking class in Ny next week. You should ask them for a complimentary ticket. see their website under events
Rhonda R Relyea says
Great idea, Leslie! I hope you go, Mavis!
Pj Truman says
I’m sad this happened after waiting so long, but believe in silver linings… Maybe they’ll expedite your claim replacement order and the new model will be better than what you’d hoped for and arrive sooner than planned.
Lindsey says
How awful! So sorry this happened to you.
Cat says
So sorry about your stove! Not exactly the same problem but we keep running into issues with our over the range microwave. We keep having fitting issues and are contemplating our third microwave for the brand new kitchen. It’s extremely frustrating and sad. I thought it would be done by now and now its another hurdle to figure out and deal with. I can’t believe they’re only option was to ship it back and your only option was to re order and wait in line again. Not even a fast tracked one for you.
Rhonda R Relyea says
Oh my goodness. I am so sorry. I think I’ve been looking forward to this moment for you as much as you have. I love to cook and knowing I’ll never afford a stove so fine, I couldn’t wait for you to get it. You worked so hard to raise the money, too. Does it have to be returned in order to get the new one? They won’t let you use it until the other arrives? Give Lucy kisses and cuddles from me. I love her so much.
Becky says
I ordered a small freeze dryer ( love love love) the company told me to uncrate it and not let the truck driver leave till I was done checking it out and the driver even brought it to the door when it was a curbside delivery….
Patti says
Oh Mavis, I’m so sorry. How disappointing! We went through something similar when we moved into our current house. Unfortunately, it was a GE, not an AGA, but it was shipping damage. To ease the pain, the company gave us an extended warranty.
Sue says
This is more than a P.I.T.A. but so worth the wait. Every episode of “Escape to the country” features an AGA in the kitchen and I often think of you when I see one. Not a common site in this part of the country. Aren’t there any distributors stateside?
Anne Radesi says
Aren’t there any Aga dealers in Maine or even in the Northeast?
Mavis Butterfield says
It’s not something that is “in-stock” it has to be special ordered. 🙁
Terri says
My favorite shipping story comes from many years ago. The company I worked for had crated up and shipped a server (high-powered computer to run business networks, etc.) to a buyer. By the time the server crate arrived in NYC during its journey, the crate was empty! As far as I know, that was the only time it happened.
Teri says
OMG Mavis this is so sad. Is there a dealer in the US you can deal with and possibly get it sooner?
Mimi says
Oh, that stinks! I’m sure in the end it will be worth the hassle but so disappointing right now.
Mel says
I’m a sarcastic person who generally should not be taken seriously, but since you raised money for the Aga by hooking rugs, I would totally hook a rug illustrating your Aga journey (all the work, the anticipation, the disappointment, having to wait again, etc) and mail it to the company.
Mavis Butterfield says
When I saw the damage, I actually thought of you and all your troubles with appliances. Funny, but not funny. 🙂
Mel says
Yes, I can relate! That said, when our refrigerator arrived with cosmetic damage last year (a small dent on the side that is not visible), we still got $400 off. I feel like they should at least give you the new one at the price of the damaged one.
Judi Y. says
I’m so, so sorry. ❤️❤️
Angelia says
Good thing you had a backup plan. Sorry about the stove but at least your getting an upgrade. That aga saga was too funny!
Allison says
Do they have any idea who they’re messing with??? Don’t be shy about impressing upon them how many followers you have (on blog, on Pinterest, etc) and how very surprised and disappointed everyone is about what happened. Perhaps they’ll rethink their response:. A new model at the old price and an expedited delivery would go a long way in repairing their reputation with your (many, many, many) fans!
Molly says
Oh No ! That didn’t happen!!
So sorry such a disappointment!
I was so looking forward to you sharing your new experiences cooking on THAT BEAST
KCB says
I am so sorry! Like others, I was anxious for the big reveal. One question, should your AGA need repair in the future, is getting a repair person difficult?
OregonGuest says
Well, it’s settled. You simply will have to head back across the pond to “inspect” the next shipment. Let’s call it therapy for the mental anguish!
Dee says
I am sorry that you are disappointed. You worked hard for the money to buy the AGA you wanted, and now have to wait again and pay $ 1,000,00 additional for the new model! It just doesn’t seem fair.
I am q believer in what’s meant to be, will be. Everything happens for a reason. You may not know it now, but you will – at the tight time. You just weren’t meant to have that particular stove.
Hold on to your dreams, the best is yet to come.
Rebecca says
BOO HISS YUCK!! This totally stinks. Have you thought about hitting Craigslist/Restore, etc to get a used stove/oven to use in the meantime? Do you have to wait on counters/sink until the Aga is installed?
Ugh. I’m so sorry, because you had been waiting SO patiently!
