Last friday we stopped by the Belfast Farmers Market just after opening and were pleasantly surprised to see so many people out already getting their fix of local produce and baked goods.
Stalls selling fresh bread seemed to do really well at farmers markets here in Maine. One line had over a dozen people in it! How cool/crazy is that? You know they’re selling something good if people are willing to stand in a line like that.
We opted for sourdough breakfast bagels from Spark Bagel, which were a few stalls down before walking around some more to look at the plants, produce and other things the vendors were selling. {The bagels were fantastic by the way.}
Looking for the best homemade shortbread? We tried some from Sweet Monkey Business and the samples were so good, we bought a bag of their lemon bursts shortbread to snack on. They sell their shortbread squares online too, just in case you’re looking to send someone a sweet treat.
After the Farmers market we walked around downtown Belfast for a bit. Has anyone seen the new Downtown Abbey movie or Maverick? While I’m not a big fan of watching movies in theaters {the giant reclining seats are creepy to me}, the old Colonial Movie Theater in downtown Belfast looked pretty cool.
When we got home I checked their website and the concession stand and theater seats are old school so maybe a movie there is in our future?
If you were wondering where the “Oldest shoe store in America” was, I found it! 🙂
And a fallout shelter too. It’s located right next to Chase’s Daily.
But the best part about our trip to Belfast wasn’t the farmers market or any of the shops downtown or even the waterfront area.
It was the “Coffeeman” and his mobile coffee stand. 🙂
As it turns out, this is the Coffeeman’s 33rd season selling coffee, tea and hot chocolates to locals and tourists alike. He doesn’t use lids or sell decaf, but he does have the BEST cup of creamy rich hot chocolate on the planet earth.
Why anyone would get their cuppa anywhere else is beyond me. This guy is the real deal.
We loved his stand! And if you’re ever in Belfast, you can find him down on the public landing at the end of Main Street right by the Nautilus Restaurant.
Coffeeman. Just another reason to visit the great state of Maine. 🙂
Here’s to a warm and productive day,
~Mavis

Maverick had really good practical effects and should be seen on the big screen. I would pay the cost of admission again (we saw it in a drive in theater this last weekend) just to watch the flight scenes one more time. The story was a bit meh, but Tom Cruise’s acting was good.

Love the coffee man signs….”we extend credit,” “no lids since 1990,” “no decaf (with an ‘e’ decafe) since 1992”. What a character. I bet he knows all of the local gossip as much as the nearest barber shop.

I was in Belfast the same day, celebrating completion our school year. We made it to the farmers market around 12, not much left but looked good.
This week I visited wild oats Market per your referral and it did not disappoint! I’ve lived in Maine my whole life and didn’t know of these gems, keep up the good work exploring!
If you make it to Bangor paddy Murphys is a great pub to eat at.

What a wonderful outing! I would really enjoy a day like that and I sure so love me some good coffee! Living in the Low Country sure has made me appreciate good local produce and food! I need to plan another trip to Maine however.
