Yesterday while the HH and I were out for a walk, I found a fully wrapped Gu stroopwafel on the ground. And so I picked it up and put it in my bag. Because hey, free food, right? 😉 Have you tried those things before? They are CRAZY good! {The HH didn’t even notice I had found anything on the ground because he was too busy looking at a car that was going by.}
Yada yada yada … about an hour later as we were sitting on a bench eating ice cream cones {it was a long walk} I pulled the wrapped waffle out of my bag to show it to him. I asked my husband if he would eat it. And he said YES, he totally would. And then I sent a text message to The Girl {who LOVES stroopwafels as well} to see what she would say.
So apparently, we are a family of scavengers. 🙂 🙂 🙂
But I want to know if YOU would have picked it up {and tossed it in your pantry} or left it on the ground.
Are you on team Hey, free food… or team Gag me with a spoon?
Curious minds want to know.
~Mavis
Kelly says
I would have picked it up because before your post I had no idea what it was or even that it existed. Are they like sugar cones that you get when you get an ice cream? Are they a regional food from somewhere other than New England, where I’ve lived my entire life. I’m curious now!
Mrs. C. says
They are Dutch. Becoming a bit more popular on this side of the pond.
Regina martin says
I’m on team “I love stroopwafels!”. Of course you should have picked it up!
Pauletta says
Yes, pick it up, they are delicious!
Sue says
You bet I would have picked it up and tried it later. Never had a stroopwafel.
kathie Paje says
Free food girlfriend!!!!
Rosaleen says
Umm….Is there any way to tell that the package was absolutely NOT breached by even a pinhole? It would not take much to inject a toxin with a syringe. Have you forgotten stories of contaminated Halloween candy or drugs on store shelves?
JulieP says
Definitely team ‘free food’
Robin in WI says
I would have picked it up because it’s litter and it’s ugly, and the plastic wrapper is dangerous to wild animals. (Those dental picks you keep finding on the ground piss me off — disrespectful jerks.) Then it would go in the trash, but I got a kick out of your post. 🙂
Jo says
Gag me with a spoon! No I would not pick it up to eat. I would however, pick it up to throw away!
Marti says
I would have picked it up because it was litter and tossed in the nearest garbage can. I don’t care how good it is, it could have been compromised somehow.
Tracey says
For me, that’s a no brainer: definitely pick it up. Eat it too! LOL but let me ask you this, if you saw a banana on the ground what would you think or do?
E in Upstate NY says
Aldis is where I get my Stroopwafel fix. They are a Dutch cookie.
Gina says
And Trader Joe’s! And no. I’m scared to eat found food!
Katie says
Oooh these are so yummy! I would have picked it up to throw in the trash. I’m sure it’s fine, but I don’t think I could bring myself to eat it.
Carol says
Team free food!
Jennifer G says
Totally Hey, free food (as long as it was completely sealed)
Ramona says
I would have left it where it was. If I had dropped it then the 5 second rule would have counted. I have been wiping down all my groceries after I come home from grocery shopping., so picking some food product off the ground, no.
Sandra says
Nope. Would have picked it up to toss, but not a chance in H – E – double hockey sticks would I have eaten it. During this time of covid I would have probably picked it up with a kleenex or something. But never eaten it.
lynn says
is it worth the dollar or 2 for this item to risk your health? absolutely NOT. would have picked up to throw out but definitely not to eat.
Dianne says
Gag me with a spoon! In the trash it goes.
Lynda says
Sweet! Sweets! Yay for free food!
Sherry in Sumner says
Interesting question, Mavis. But if your daughter was a toddler and she found it and started to eat it, would you have let her? 99% of people are good, but I wouldn’t take a chance on the 1% who might do something to deliberately harm somebody. I would pick it up and toss it in the nearest trash can.
Linda Practical Parsimony says
I would have picked it up only to toss it as trash. I am with Rosaleen. I was thinking injection, too.
Diane says
Wouldn’t eat it. There’s a tiny number of people in the world who are seriously twisted and I also thought how someone could inject something through the packaging.
Lana says
I would have not touched it at all. I would have liked to put it in the trash but not without soap and water to wash right after.
Wendy says
I would have also picked it up but would not eat it, only to throw in the trash. You just don’t know and it’s not worth taking the chance. But they are good!!
Karen J says
Oh my gosh! We discovered Stroopwafles when it was given as a snack on a United Airline flight. Now we are hooked. I have never seen the salty’s caramel version though. Not sure if I would have picked it up, but am sure i would have taken a pic of it and hunted for it online. Now I want one.
Sue says
Karen, this is how I was introduced to the Stroopwafle on a United flight. Yes, I put on my cup to warm a bit. Caramel, since I’m allergic to chocolate.
I don’t think I would eat it, just put in the trash bin.
Mable says
Allergic to chocolate?!! How can you live??
Lisa R says
Nope would never eat someting off of the ground. People do some sick things in this world. Just the other day a friend of mine posted that near her someone put hot dogs on the ground with roofing nails in them(I guess for dogs in the neighborhood to eat) Normally I would pick it up and throw it in the trash but in the times of Covid on the ground it would stay.
Rita says
It might be fine but then again it might be poisoned! I don’t think I would eat it.
Lissa says
I would always pick up and eat….except during Covid season. I don’t care about the other germs
Laura says
I first had these in Amsterdam, they are so good. You put them on top of a hot mug of coffee so the caramel melts.
Beth says
That’s the best way to eat them!
Teckla says
I’m on the side of caution. Too many weird jerks in the world today, and with Covid 19 craziness, who knows what might be on it. I would consider picking it up with a tissue or something and trashing it. Far better to be safe than sorry.
SANDYF says
99% chance that it is fine-but we are in a pandemic!!! We can’t even touch our loved ones that are under stay at home orders so-NO WAY! In a normal world-nope I wouldn’t, but in a world pandemic-not a chance in HELL.
Debi says
Would pick up with a Kleenex or I carry store’s plastic bags for doggie poop, and toss. There are too many crazies out there. In Wisconsin along trails, someone has left poison for dogs. I guess I don’t trust like I use to.
Mrs. M. says
With so many people responding that they think it could have been poisoned and therefore wouldn’t eat it, it’s probably a good bet that a weirdo would poison something most people would actually eat. So, I’d think it was safe to pick up and to eat. Lol
Mavis Butterfield says
F U N N Y !!
Mimi says
No. Absolutely not gonna pick up stray food and keep it. I always imagine the worst case scenario: guy uses bathroom at Costco wearing gloves and still wearing the aforementioned gloves drives to the neighborhood where Mavis goes for walks and still wearing gloves Costco restroom guy goes for a walk with a GU Stroopwafel in his pocket. Mid-walk the Stroopwafel falls out of his pocket and minutes later Mavis picks up the Stroopwafel and puts it in her bag. All I can think of is Costco restroom guy and his gloves!!!
Mavis Butterfield says
Hilarious.
Bonnie Schmidt says
Two words. Covid. Pandemic.
Linda says
Get in my belly! I love stroopwaffles….. I hope it’s not poisonous after looking up in the comments!
Kippy says
Reminds me of recent trip to the bank. Social distancing, masks etc . Lady came in talking on cell phone with two year old in stroller. Toddler marches to lollipop jar, grabs one and is able to unwrap it. Mom still on phone. Toddler licks lollipop twice, drops it on floor. Mom oblivious to situation. Kid picks up lollipop and resumes licking. I was only one who noticed.
I’d never eat food even if in wrapper, that was on the ground.
Tracy says
I would have picked it up’ for sure. But tossed it, not eaten it. Banana too.
Lynda says
Would have left it. Don’t like caramel anyway!
Arbie Goodfellow says
In the trash it goes … too easy to re glue a seal.
There are crazy people in this world. I just saw on fb someone put nails in bite size hot dogs to make animals suffer…
Pam says
I’m on team oblivious. I probably would not have even seen it…AND if I had, I would never have eaten it.
Lori says
First let me say that I have never heard of or eaten a stroopwafle.
I would have picked it up and checked to make sure it was sealed tight. I would have taken it home and opened it, sniffed it, and probably taken a bite, just to see what it was and what it taste like. If I didn’t like it I would have fed it to my chickens. Free food always taste better!
Laura says
As long as it was sealed. I would absolutely have it with my coffee. They are awesome! Definitely was invented by a women!
Max says
I would’ve picked it up. I love food that’s free and delicious!
Alicia Webster says
Yes. I almost never refuse a gift that GOD provides. I am grateful for every blessing , both big and small. And tasty 🙂
Mrs. M. says
Love this reply!
andrea d says
Yes! Especially a stroopwafel – they are the best!
KCB says
Never. For all the reasons listed above. Remember the Tylenol scare? That kind of free food is not worth the risk!
Sherry in Sumner says
KCB, when I was reading and responding to Mavis’s question, I thought about the Tylenol scare too. The lady who died from that worked in the next town over from me in Washington. Can’t remember if there were copycats or not but it definitely forever changed how things are packaged. Just can’t be too careful these days.
You definitely hit on a hot topic, Mavis!
Loretta says
Well, before all this started, I picked up an onion which was lying on the grass, near my neighbour’s bin (she’d put it out on the nature strip for collection). It looked fine, and I was going to peel it before I chopped it up for use, but I’m still glad no one saw me:-) And my husband and kids would have been *horrified*. So I probably would have picked the waffle up and eaten it!
Kim says
I think most people commenting that they would not eat it, are people that live in places where they have to lock their doors at night and can’t leave their keys in the car all the time.
#livinginasmalltown #notworried
Lynda says
I was surprised by HH’s response. I thought he’d say, “Throw it away! It could have fallen from a dead person’s pocket.”.
Mavis Butterfield says
Ha Ha Ha.
Stacey says
i wouldn’t have eaten it. I love free food, but there could be microtears in the wrapper that let bacteria in. It wouldn’t be worth the risk unless I was desperate.
Jim Doolittle says
They are a tremendous snack, always get them when I fly United. But no eatsies, I’d have picked it up and thrown it out :).
Nancy says
This cracks me up!! I would have picked it up normally because it’s trash but maybe not at this time of Covid. I definitely would not eat it what if some dog pee’d on it and it soaked the wrapper. Hahaha Oh well I hope you enjoyed it and you are still alive so no harm done!!
Christina says
These comments were so great! I was chuckling away…
I think I would’ve picked it up and thrown it away. And then felt paranoid about the germs now living on my hands. Yikes! And if my husband had been with me he would’ve convinced me not to touch it all. He’s a MAJOR germophobe at the best of times. And these aren’t the best of times! 🙂
Brenda Schilke says
Im on team, Hey, free food! As long as it is completely wrapped, I’m picking it up!
Heidi Ho says
Hey if its still wrapped up, I am totally on Team Free Food! I do not like waste! 🙂
Lace Faerie says
Absolutely NOT! Too many crazies out there would get their jollies making someone ill or worse.
