Monkey Boy finished wheeling in the remaining compost to the backyard yesterday. There was plenty to fill the {16} 4′ x 8′ garden beds, 3 large pots, the pumpkin patch and a new area I carved out by the back porch to grow potatoes.
We also went ahead and added a small amount of compost to the new strawberry bed as well as the raspberry patch. Now all I need to do is trick convince the Handsome Husband to stop by the feed store today and pick up a bale of straw so I can lay it down between the raspberry rows.
I know January may seem a little early to start thinking about a garden, but in just a few weeks it will be time to plant the peas, and beets.
I have a question…
When do YOU plant peas?
Jamie says
I’m in N. Illinois and last year I planted peas in the beginning of April – that was the earliest I’ve ever tried too start anything outside. They made it and did ok – even with a very cold spring last year. I’ll try again this year. Wish I could start earlier – I’m getting itchy to plant garden!

Umm….never? We don’t do peas at our house. ever. Your garden looks great!!!
Jules says
We usually do it in April. You could earlier, but there is more chance they’ll rot in the ground. And if you do it too late, it will be too hot for them.
Your garden looks so nice and neat and pretty!

Thanks Jules.

Nov 11th I know I’m a big gambler when it comes to gardening. We’ve had no winter at all. Last week started getting flowers on the snap peas so unless we get a freak winter cold snap I’m thinking my gamble just might pay off.

I’m trying to decide if I should plant on President’s Day or not. I can always use a row cover if there is a threat of frost… It’s hard to decide.
Lynn says
Do you just plant the beet seeds directly outside or have you started them inside?
Mavis says
Yes, I plant the beets seeds directly in the a garden.

I love your garden…it’s so spacious and tidy. Very inspiring…
As far as planting peas…I plant them LATE. But not on purpose…more out of procrastination. However, this year since we planted some broccoli and greens I’m feeling a little more accomplished at this whole cold weather gardening thing so maybe I’ll go ahead and plant some dang peas and beets. I LOVE beets and am always sorry I didn’t plant any!!
