Because we started our journey over the weekend, and because I wanted to give myself a little bit of a time buffer {in case I was too tired to write at night}, this post {and the ones to follow in this series} were started a few days ago.
HELLO HELLO HELLO!
This week will be a little different on the blog, instead of my regular assortment of posts, I’ll be sharing our 3,000+ mile journey across the United States of America. The HH and Monkey Boy will be driving the moving truck while The Girl, Lucy and I are in the wagon. If we are lucky, we’ll get there in 4 very looooooong days, if the weather is rotten, well, it will take much longer. If you’ve ever taken a road trip before, then you know one thing is for sure…. To expect the unexpected.
Life, is one great big adventure, and I’m SO READY FOR THIS!!!
Loading the U-Haul
Yesterday we loaded up the U-Haul and much to my husband’s surprise… EVERYTHING FIT! He was certain there wouldn’t be enough room for the 2 stock tanks {I use them for gardening} the wheelbarrow or the mower. The HH said we should just leave them behind, especially the mower. He {very dramatically} told me it would take 4 days to mow the lawn at the new place with the push mower but I was like HELLO…. why would we leave stuff behind? We are going to NEED those things at some point {I mean seriously, leave behind a wheelbarrow?}. We don’t have a riding mower yet … and since Mr. Research Pants likes to take his sweet time deciding on big purchases… Who knows, maybe that mower WILL come in handy.
Gaaaaa. Whateva…. Moving pains. Right?
The Chicken Rug
Although I drew out this pattern before we left the HOA house, I did my best to work on other projects while we were staying in the 600 square foot apartment. I wanted to be able to bring a SINGLE project to work on in the car as we drive east. I simply cannot for the life of me just stare out a window. I’d go bonkers if I didn’t have a project to work on while someone else is driving and, well, this is it.
I have 3 bags of wool strips {river rock {for the chicken and border}, faded black {for the background} and some assorted colors {for the hit and miss colors}. The goal is to arrive at the new place with 3 empty bags and a nearly finished rug. Only time will tell!
The car has been loaded with snacks…. {Because really, who wants to eat a Slim Jim or a 3 hour old corn dog from a mini mart in the middle of nowhere? Boys, that’s who!}
And then at the last minute we had to make room for this.
That Mrs. Hillbilly. She’s full of surprises. She gave The Girl and I road trip bucket full of {apparent} necessities for the long 3,000 mile journey. Now I’ve been on a lot of road trips before, but I’ll tell you one thing, I’ve never felt the need to pack diapers or MRE’s or a bucket for that matter. Which sorta begs the question…. Where in the world has Mrs. HB traveled to before that these items were necessary? 😉 LOVE YA Mrs HB!!! You’re a nut and I’m going to miss you.
Moving day. It’s finally here, and I couldn’t be more excited! Let’s get this show on the road baby. #EastCoastOrBust

So excited for you …… I could tell you what the items are for but maybe it will be fun for your readers to guess! Already miss you soooooo much !!!! xxxooos
Linda says
Mrs. HB I feel badly that you’re loosing your dear friend Mavis, but so happy for her to be realizing the dream that’s been building for some time. It had to be hard for her to leave everyone she loves behind, but you two like to travel so there’s a new destination waiting for you.
Maybe you’ll start a West Coast blog to fill the void of Mavis’.
Laura says
Well, duh, it is for those “I need to go and we are in the middle of nowhere South Dakota (where there are no McDonald’s for potty breaks, fyi, ask me how I know!).” I have never had to do it, but when I was potty training twins, lots of people used that method. Better than leaves and a ditch I think, but then, maybe not!
Mrs. HB says
Ding Ding Ding….. I forgot however to put the Charmin in. HB Boy said only the best would do for her and I forgot! Darn-it. Sorry Ms Mavis. Hope you find some soft leaves but not of the three leaf variety!
Em says
So sweet of you, Mrs HB!
Laura T. says
How exciting! Good luck to you all! Have a safe trip to your new adventure!
Heidi P says
Ahhh……the adventure begins! I’m very happy that you are realizing a major dream/goal of yours and we are all getting to witness your migration. Although, the PNW misses you already. I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers that your journey will go smoothly.
Okay, I know nothing about rug hooking or making a pattern but why does it say 1722? Is that a significant year in rug hooking? Maybe it should say “2018”? The year of the “Mavis Migration”? I do think its a beautiful pattern. I love birds.
Lastly, you are so right to take that mower and wheel borrow. You will need both for your garden! Who wants to buy another? The mower will come in handy around all your garden beds and smaller areas a riding mower won’t fit. We live on 7+ acres and we NEED a push mower for many areas.
Patty P says
I agree…we have around 7 acres and I have found many places to use my little push mower. It’s very handy to have!
Wendy Clark says
SO excited to follow you right family on this journey!!!!
Tracy says
Those diapers may come in handy if you are traveling the I-90 route through Montana. I was just through that route (last month) and a couple of rest stops are “under construction” right now. Hubby and I along with our two kids drove cross country three times. It was a fun experience especially since it was corporate moves, we only had the vehicle and suitcases to deal with.
Terri at The Frugal List says
Oh my goodness, what on earth could the diapers be for? I can see a purpose for everything but the diapers. LOL
Margery says
The mre are for when you break down in a snowstorm with no cellphone connection. When we lived in rural NY our van always had mre, sleeping bags, and other gear in the back all winter long.
Deb K says
I thought the bucket was for yard work and the garden at the new house. It never occurred to me its use during the trip till I started reading the comments. How funny! Have a fun trip and a great east coast life when you arrive.
Marcia says
Exciting! My one cross country road trip move was decades ago, from East Coast to California. In the dead of summer. Took 5 days (we hung out a day in Vegas). If you’ve never driven 10-12 hours in a packed Chevy Nova through the desert…with malfunctioning AC, you haven’t lived!
On a completely unrelated note, thanks for the Costco tip for glasses, from months ago. I have vision insurance. The last time I priced out progressives from my eye doctor, with insurance, they were over $600. Thanks but no thanks! Instead I got a pair of reading glasses.
Costco was not taking my insurance, so I waited. However, new year, new insurance, covered at Costco! Went in a week ago for a vision test, five days later have my new progressives – $10 for the vision test (after insurance) and $75 for the glasses, whee!!
Mavis Butterfield says
Wow! Huge savings!
Ashley says
So excited — if you head through Missouri, let us know! 🙂
Mary Ann says
I’ve done it four times — California to Massachusetts, back to California, back to Massachusetts, and then back to California (forever)! We did it with hubby driving the moving van and me driving the 4Runner with all of the pets. Crazy, but we never needed a bucket or diapers! LOL
Have a safe trip!
Julie says
I can see the value of that bucket and its contents for the trip….but then I have traveled with little kids and have seen enough pictures of stranded travelers in these crazy winter storms we’ve had this winter.
Lolly says
Eeek, how’s ya’lls timing with that nor’easter coming in?!?! I’m atressing for you! Lol!
I can figure out the bucket and wipes…..but diapers??? Do you put one in the bottom of the bucket to soak up the pee?! Why?! I think she was just being a funny-butt….hehehee. Though I have to say….only TWO coffees for a 4 day trip?! 😉
Mrs. HB says
Didn’t want to think of “it” sloshing around!
Lolly says
Lol!
I think I can speak for most of us….we heart you, Mrs HB! You and Mavis will have to come up with a way for us to still hear about your shenanigans!
Mrs.HB says
For sure !!
Teri says
Love Mrs. HB and her sense of humor. Is that a tube of lip balm I see? Ha Ha! Have a safe trip and take lots of pictures!
Jennifer says
That was the one thing I noticed – the lip balm!!
MB says
I love Road Trips! If you’d left the wheel barrow or push mower behind you would for sure have needed them right away!
Um is that “Chicken Poop” lip balm or are my eyes going?
Thank you so much for keeping up the blog and I agree that Mrs. HB should keep us updated!
Safe travels and I hope you find many tasty bakeries along the way
Helen in Meridian says
I noticed that too. Does that mean Mavis has Chicken Lips? Of course Mrs. HB would have Chicken Poop lip balm in her collection. I love her new vegetable boxes and her chicken coop. Maybe chicken poop is the new coconut oil.
Mavis Butterfield says
I sure hope chicken poop is not the new coconut oil. 😉
Marybeth says
I’m assuming the bucket is for you and the diapers are for Lucy. Have a safe trip. We are supposed to get snow on the East coast this week.
Janet says
Mrs HB, you are hilarious!!
Amy says
Mrs. HB is awesome! MRE for when you break down or blow a tire (that’s when you get cold and hungry) and have to wait for the tow truck or spare parts. Diapers soak up a lot of liquid. Not to be all gloom and doom, but a diaper would be a good bandage in a traffic accident. A friend who is a nurse once used a clean pad (they’re sterile before they’re opened) on a head wound until the ambulance arrived with bandages. Have a safe journey!!
Mrs.HB says
WHat a great idea !!!
Jennifer Meyer says
Hahaha at the chapstick! Oh Mrs HB!
Connie says
Wishing you a safe trip. I hope you love your new home.
Mrs.HB says
You all know chap stick is great for preventing wind burn should they get stranded in the snow storm and have to walk miles before finding another human being . Also good for chaffing , lube , cuticle softener, unsticking hard to open zippers …… so many options .
And yes that does say chicken poop . Got it at our local Wilco farm supply store . Just couldn’t resist!!!
