It’s been a really busy year for us and I am so, SO ready to be done with “projects” for this year. It finally feels like we’re coming down the home stretch, and it feels good.
Moving, packing, unpacking into storage units, staying in an Airbnb, finding a place, getting stuff out of the storage units, getting rid of the stuff that was left behind in the new house, getting a work space set up, finding furniture that will work, getting in line for a fence, getting a fence so Lucy can run around and so I’ll be able to have a garden next year….
You know, all the fun stuff that comes with moving. 🙂
Add to all of that, cramming in as many outside/garden projects as possible before the weather turns and we pack it all in for winter.
I am tired! WE are tired! Quitting time can’t come soon enough this year. Sure we could have waited until next spring to start working on everything, but then I wouldn’t be able to really enjoy next summer in the garden because there would be SO MUCH to do.
Getting 80% of the outside stuff done ahead of time was a good plan. I’m glad we did {are doing} it. But man oh man, mark my words…
As soon as that couch and the HH’s recliner arrives, we’re done. I won’t even so much as lift a paint brush {unless it’s for a paint by number} until at least February of 2025.
The home stretch, it feels good to be nearly there, to be done for the year.
I do know what the first garden project of 2025 will be though… A new potting bench made with the old decking. Because seriously, I can’t let all that old wood go to waste.
We’re almost finished… Quitting time is in sight. Hopefully the HH can complete the back deck in the next few days, I’ll get it stained and then we’re just left with planting the 2,000 spring bulbs that I ordered {what was I thinking!?}.
And hey, check it out!!! An overnight temp of 40 degrees next week is predicted. Yee-Haw! The snow can’t be too far behind, right?

Since you kept the original framing and live in an area with lots of moisture, I would have recommended putting flashing tape on the framing structure. It will prevent the rot of the frame prematurely and cover any existing screw holes from moisture penetration. I have used it and it works well. Even treated boards for a frame don’t stand up to the moisture and rot in the long run and it just adds an extra protection layer and several more years.

We were in the mid 30s in SE Wyoming two mornings ago. And then the temperature yesterday was in the upper 80s. It’s the time of year when we have lots of temperature fluctuations. I am so done with summer. I’m tired just reading what all you two have been doing.

Planing the fence wood makes them look new again and you can make whatever from them. I can’t wait to see your new garden. I have a friend that has garden towers all over their back yard and can produce almost as much as their large garden.

Do you have to add railing again to the deck or is it low enough that you don’t?
Mavis Butterfield says
We still need to add a railing. We’re thinking about going the cable route to open up the view from the deck a bit.

That’s what we have on our deck (we have a water view) and we love it and it has held up VERY well even with dogs and lots of use. We opted to have a wood top so we could lean on it and put drinks on it but the rest is all cables.

I’m thinking you are making it so adorable that someone will come along and make you an offer you can’t refuse.

YES on the potting bench :)! We were hoping that you would repurpose the old wood, it’s got a great seasoned look to it. Hope that you guys are doing well :)!

We are in the heat wave. Luckily we didn’t have the one freezing night in September, like we usually get. We still have a ton of green tomatoes. Just spent an hour trying to get rid of hidden leaves so hopefully the tomatoes will ripen.

Mavis, where did you get your obelisks that are in the photo?

Hi! Take a peek at yesterday’s post. I think there’s a link there!

You two work so hard I get exhausted just reading all that you get done!! I hope that couch arrives some and didn’t know you decided to let the HH get his recliner!! Yay
Does this mean he’s officially old now? He will love it! House looks great but please lets not rush the snow you need a lot of time to get all those bulbs in the ground
What were you thinking!!! Can’t wait to see in the spring

You MOVED….again! Have not been around in a long while. Need to catch up. My hubs and I are also looking forward to hibernating this winter. Between the current fires, smoke and heat not much getting done except at the crack of dawn…life in So. CA.

Hi Mavis, Habitat for Humanity will take any lumber you have. They use it for walking ramps (disabled folks).
