The HH and I drove to Rhode Island yesterday and one of the stops along our way was the Rough Point Museum in Newport, Rhode Island. Formerly the summer “cottage” of high society peeps like Fredrick W. Vanderbilt, William and Nancy Leeds, James Buchanan Duke and lastly Doris Duke, the property sits nicely upon the rocky shoreline coast of Newport, Rhode Island.
Not only did we get to take a tour of the home {which I’ll share next week once I’ve had time to wade my way though all the photos I took} but we also took a peek at the formal kitchen garden on the side of the property.
And boy was it lovely. Talk about garden goals! Simple and refined and an absolute joy to stroll around.
Everyone needs a camel topiary planted with succulents in their garden, don’t you think?
It was absolutely beautiful.
And a wooden garden trellis. Maybe I could get the HH to build me one this winter.
Catmint! I need to add this to my garden. I love the flowers.
Russian Kale.
Companion planting at it’s finest.
Have you ever tried growing potatoes in a grow bag before? I’ll be planting one this weekend.
Alpine strawberries. Another variety I want to try.
Planted along with purple and white alyssum at the base of a tree, I think it’s beautiful.
Vegetable gardens. They make me swoon.
Have a wonderful weekend everyone.
Happy weeding!

Suspect you have already left the Newport area, but if you liked it and want to come back, I encourage you to join the Preservation Society that conducts tours of the Newport Mansions. It is well worth going through those just to see the opulance of the era.

I think you want catmint not catnip. I have catnip and it doesn’t flower. Wonder if you have to keep that “mint” contained.
Stephanie says
I have catmint in my flower beds and it does spread quite easily, but I love it and just pull it when it goes where I don’t want it
Martha Buchanan says
Hmm, Pam ,
My catnip flowers and spread! Oh my does catnip spread. I have a happy house
Gigi says
Catmint is awesome. It attracts so many bees. Mine grows really well and each bush is about 2’ round. It does not spread like mint but the seeds to start popping up in nearby areas. And it’s easy to transplant.

Anyone know what the tree is in the center? Lovely!
Margo Nutt says
It’s a Nishiki Willow.
Diane says
It’s a salix integra (variegated willow), which will grow as a shrub, but which the gardener has pruned/trained as a small tree. It won’t grow to be monstrous like a weeping willow, but they CAN get pretty big if you don’t keep them trimmed. Beautiful foliage.

Any garden makes me swoon! Thanks for sharing.

My neighbor gave us a small strawberry that has white berries that taste like pineapple. Very invasive but a nice ground cover! What does an alpine strawberry taste like?
Tonya says
They are called pineberries 🙂
Karen says
How do you grow potatoes in the bag? I tried last year, but no potatoes☹️
Rita says
Love that camel. You look so very happy Mavis.

Hi Mavis, just heading home, Seattle, from the DC area.
Thanks for recommending Monticello- so beautiful! We also toured Mount Vernon. Loved it also.
