If Kennebunk, Maine is on your list of places to visit this summer then you’ll want to be sure and stop by the corner of Portland and Ross road and have a bite to eat at The Ocean Roll.
We have driven past The Ocean Roll {an antique truck serving Maine seafood} several times before and finally had the time to stop by for lunch the other day. We were not disappointed!
In fact we thought the food was so good, and the atmosphere fantastic, that we’re already looking forward to going back. The service was great and the prices were some of the lowest we’ve seen for fresh seafood around here.
Seriously! How cute is this truck!?
The HH wants to go back and try their 50/50 burger. After he’s sampled all their seafood of course. 😉
Fried clams.
Fried haddock.
Their grilled weenie. That’s what I had and it was perfect by the way!
And their coleslaw! It tastes just like my copycat Kentucky Fried Chicken coleslaw recipe.
One of the things I love about Maine the most, is all the independent eateries and shops. You’re more likely to find a mom and pop store than you are a big box chain store. And I like that.
It gives people more of a sense of community and feels so much more homey than say eating lunch at an Applebee’s or something. People really seem to go out of their way to support small businesses too.
Maine. The way life should be. I love it here.
Only 4 weeks to go until we get to move into our new place!

Such a cute food truck, almost a nostalgia look. I would totally stop just to check out the truck.
On another side note, I noticed the giant coffee can sized tip jar. It seems everywhere nowadays has oversized tip jars and they are right there in your face to notice. My hubby and I have had many debates over the past year over the tip jars. I recently bought some ice cream from a counter shop and paid with cash and the guy threw my change in the tip jar rather than hand it to me, it infuriated me and I let him know how inappropriate it was especially since it was $4.29/scoop in a cup.

Goodness! That was quite nervy of the ice cream guy. I wonder if he would appreciate a server doing that? Smh.

We have places that we have just crossed off our list because of this type of entitlement behavior. Mom and Pop places are closing here every week and I have wondered if this has something to do with it.
Also, in our county we have 9% sales tax on restaurant food. We now tip on the subtotal as there is no need for us to tip based on what goes to the state and county.

I try to give cash tips wherever I can since that’s not recorded as tips added to a receipt are. Mostly at regular shop that I visit often, know the staff, and they are excellent at what they do
Been there, done that myself.

It bothers me that along with tip jars, most of the small places that accept credit cards (not chain stores – mostly ice cream stands, farm stands, mom and pop places) have the credit card machine programed to ask if you want to tip. It takes effort to bypass it at many locations. If there’s stellar service and someone has done more than hand me an ice cream cone or weigh my tomatoes, I may tip. I don’t think every action warrants a tip.
Lana says
Exactly and we have just learned to ignore the begging for handouts.

Thank you for posting. Heading up to Goose Rocks Beach in a few weeks – we’ll be sure to stop!

Oh, oh, oh! I want a 50/50 burger! I’d like a lot of their fish products, too but, man, I want a 50/50 burger!

My mouth is watering just looking at those pictures. Fried seafood! Ya gotta love it – if you’re a New Englander that is. Mavis I’m surprised you’re not calling it Fish and Chips ☺️

… now I want to know what a clam cake is! Wouldn’t that be really chewy and hard to eat?

Thanks for posting this Mavis. Going to Maine soon and was hoping to find a place that has good prices.
We didn’t want to drive almost three hours to go to our favorite spot .
Can’t wait to see the new home.
Have a great weekend, Janie
